Missus ignoramus and I are staying at the Marriott in The Quarter this Friday and Saturday. Hoping to hit up Tipsy's one night... are reservations required?
I dont believe it is open yet. However, check the McClure's thread for more info.
He might be thinking of Dante's. If so, Tipsy has left, but I suspect it is still awesome.
good point. and yes, Dante's is still awesome. definitely make reservations.

We ended up at Dante's on Saturday night and lucked into a patio seat and enjoyed a wonderfully pleasant spring evening. I know it has been said a thousand times about the food at Dante's already, but wow. We feasted on beef hearts, an amazing chicken pate, braised lamb shank and a pork loin. Oh yeah, there were a few mandolin-sliced pieces of zucchini on a plate in there somewhere, I think, so it was a well-balanced meal.

Another highlight was Jimmy J's on Chartres. Service was SSS-LLL-OOO-WWW but the bacon bloody mary and the nicely-balanced red sangria (along with the nearby table of smoking-hot ladies on their bachelorette party) made the wait bearable. I went with their shrimp and oyster poboy and the missus had a portabello/sun-dried tomato on ciabatta. Both were very, very good.

I also got into a hand-rolled maduro at the New Orleans Cigar Factory and enjoyed the smoke along with a very nice house cab at Patrick's Bar Vin.

Didn't see as many crazies out as usual, although we did get to watch a video of the ten fastest production cars on a homeless guy's cracked iPhone at the Krystal Burger as we tried to sop up some of the booze with greasy sliders. There was also a rather manly tranny that had just run some 5k or 10k with her husband seated behind us at Jimmy J's. Typical New Orleans color.

The Marriott on Canal was musty and very dated and the ceiling in our room was at least partly covered in a green substance I can only assume was mildew, but fortunately we didn't spend a lot of time in the room. On the bright side, I'm not 100% certain, but I'm pretty sure I saw some lady's boobs in a window across the courtyard/pool area.

how does domilise po boy compare? is it worth a side trip while there?
Those are roast beef poboys at Domilise.

This is a moist pork with a light sauce on a slaw that has a creole horseradish sauce and it's on killer bread - lines will be long but always move.

I prefer the pork over roast beef

Also, cafe pontalba in jackson square makes a killer roast beef po boy. You would think it's a tourist trap b/c of it's location, but the food is really good.

I always go for shrimp at Domilise's and it is worth the trip.Planning my week in NO in June....
Johnny's po boys in the quarter is my favorite. In my opinion, no need to make a special trip unless you're grouping it with something else uptown
Of course--if they wont be uptown there are lots of other places to go. I assumed the "trip" was short-ish.
10-15 minute ride from the quarter

got a reservation at galatoire's on 5/1 to do a fancy dinner while we're in town, any recommendations on what to get from their menu?

Headed back to NO in a few weeks:

Anyone have a review of August - John Besh's restaurant? Wife is a big Food Network-type, and I'm thinking she would dig going there. Will also probably do Commander's Palace this time. I think we'll do one for lunch one day, and the other for dinner on a different day - trying to decide which to do for dinner.

Wife has also mentioned Camellia Grill for breakfast...thoughts?

I have not been to August...but I did visit the new Donald Link restaurant(had only been open a week) - Peche and it was great - wood fired oven cooked whole redfish was delicious. Also hit up SoBou and loved it as well- got a mix and match of a lot small plates - butternut squash beignets were killer so is gumbo - shrimp and tasso pinchos as well.

I'm not a huge fan. Although the service and food are really well done, the menu & place is soul less. For a better Besh owned place I suggest Domenicas...

Commanders is what it has been for decades.....a venerable mueseum. The food is great and so is the service...but it is not what it once was.

Camilla Grill is overpriced diner...but I love it. Better breakfast is to be had two blocks down or up (dante's kitchen or satsuma ) from the grill. Surreys & Coulis are better breakfast options too in my humble opinion.

Want to go "WOW" ....go eat at ROOT. Or if you want fancier & less esoteric ....Bayona.

For lunch...grab a po boy brah!

For me, still, the best breakfast place is Elizabeth's. I know I've pimped it in here before but I've sent many folks there and have yet to hear anything other than utter enjoyment.

Check out the menu and gallery in the link. Do NOT miss the praline bacon. It's pretty close to the FQ over in Marigny.

August is great IMO

Would do August for dinner and Commander's for lunch.

Camellia is not bad...but not worth the drive/wait IMO. They have a locaiton in the quarter that I haven't been to yet...but if there is no wait there, then go for it. Coffee Pot is another solid breakfast place in the quarter

Thanks, Tipsy.

Any go-to dishes at Root you would recommend? The menu looks terrific.

Used to love that place when I lived closer to the quarter. Early weekend mornings there = $$.

Doing Sunday brunch at Commander's and dinner at Root on Tuesday night. Probably hang on Frenchmen St. Monday night - Three Muses, Snug Harbor, Spotted Cat.

Still have some room to work in some choice lunch spots.

Excited to spring this trip on Mrs. Karpis. She thinks we're just going out to dinner in town for our anniversary...has no idea we're flying to the Big Easy.

Sounds like you are going to have a great time.....

I need to pimp another restaurant.....Maurapeas Foods in the Bywater......Owner /chef is my former sous chef from Dante's....he is killing it over there.

Just checked out the online menu. Anything in particular you recommend?

the menu changes too often to have a favorite...although the goat tacos are really good and seem to be a permenant resident on the menu.

btw...cooking bbq for their staff party next week :)

Heading to Nawlins tomorrow morning for Labor Day weekend with my two roommates....anything in particular going on this weekend? Got the food options nailed down thanks to this thread.

Any of the specific haunted tours anyone recommends?

Hope y'all weren't planning on trolling for chicks: http://www.southerndecadence.net/

Southern Decadence started forty-two years ago as a simple going-away party. As a top gay Labor Day Weekend destination, it has evolved into one of our world's major annual

events. It is one of the largest annual celebrations and festivals in New Orleans, and has become known as the "Gay Mardi Gras." People begin to arrive on the Wednesday before Labor Day, and generally don't even think about stopping or going home until the following Tuesday. With over 120,000 gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender participants, and an economic impact estimated to be in excess of $125 million, the city has recognized the festival's importance with Official Proclamations to welcome the event.

Wife and I are heading down next Wednesday for a long weekend. Staying in the FQ. Looking for some restaurant recommendations. Obviously hitting McClures one day. Any other favorites, specifically seafood? Also any city tours worth it or should we wander on our own? Thanks.

the First Post is a great starting place. Tons of restaurant recommendations.

As far as city tours. Ive never done one. But walking around the quarter and even taking the street car will give you a very nice tour to start.

Jacques Imos is great but I also highly recommend Cochon.
For "seafood" - try Peche.

They have this whole fish(it was a redfish when I was there - it changes with what is the catch) that is cooked in the wood fired oven and it comes out as a shared plate - lots of good side dishes as well. It's over in Warehouse/Convention Center. Donald Link restaurant.

Also had a great dinner at SoBu in the W in the Quarter. They make a good Sazerac there as well. Again small to large plates to share.
