***Official New Orleans Thread*** (1 Viewer)

Heading out to New Orleans for Week 1 to watch my Raiders vs. the Saints. Will be flying in Thursday night arriving at 2300 and leaving Monday.

Will be going out there with the GF and it's both of our first times. I haven't look through the thread yet, but what's a good place to stay at? Looking through Kayak and the cheapest hotels within 1 mile of the French Quarter (I assume this is where a couple who wants to party should stay)  are:

Royal St. Charles $107/night

Best Western Plus St. Christopher Hotel $103

DoubleTree by Hilton $105

Hampton Inn & Suites New Orleans Downtown (Carondaelet St) $121

Omni Royal Crescent Hotel $127

Sheraton New Orleans Hotel (Canal St)  $130

Any of these hotels better than the others with primary factor being location and amenities being secondary? Any tips are appreciated. Thanks.
me and boys are headed to NO for the game as well!  corn hole?  i need an update on poor ole rusty!

we are staying at the hyatt downtown by the super dome.  i'd love any and all recommendations from the natives.  we are there sat-tues.  we'll be hitting up nola tap room for sure.  where to go to dinner on saturday night?  so many places to eat!!  can't wait.

anything cool on game day we should look into?  and if anyone has a line on tickets, let me know.

Is the cab ride from the airport to the quarter still $33 for two people?

I can usually get a ride from my people down there, but everybody is really busy with all the craziness of the flooding going on so I have to plan for alternate travel in case it's necessary.

Yaknow not even sure it might still be 35 or so I think I heard someone say that recently. I think Uber goes to the airport now though.

Thanks!  Speaking of...is there a streetcar option from the FQ (staying at Monteleone) that would bring me out toward McClures?  Wanna spend my tourist dollars right!

McClure's in on Tchoupitoulas and is several blocks from the St. Charles streetcar - the #10 Bus (via Walmart) is what you would want to take if the bus is your thing - otherwise Uber/cab it. Things have been getting funky in the Irish Channel lately and a long walk from St. Charles will be a bit iffy safety wise.

Here's where I'd look to on Saturday -Tipitinas is down the street from NOLA/McClures

http://www.tipitinas.com/events/7th-annual-black-gold-kick-party

Soul Rebels rock

Also this at the Old Mint/French Market - some great bands including Honey Island Swamp Band - who sound like Little Feat and Skynaryd together,

Thanks Drew.  I knew my wife would get a kick out of the streetcar, so hoped it was an option.  She would not be as thrilled with the bus or a long sketchy walk.

My favorite is to take streetcar to Jacque-Imo's(Shrimp and Alligator Sausage Cheescake ) for a great meal and then go to Maple Leaf next door. If you are there on Tuesday Rebirth is usually at Maple Leaf -and I'm not sure how long it will be but George Porter is there on Monday nights - two of the best New Orleans has to offer music wise. It's a great ride through Garden district on the streetcar - you get off at Oak after the turn on to Carrollton at the Riverbend and you can walk about 3 blocks. Your wife would love it - mine does.

When will you be there? For Raider game as well?

N.O. is such a great place to party but man does the city have poor infrastructure. The roads are borderline un-drivable in some parts. I don't see how people live there.

Anywho, Willie's fried chicken after a night of heavy drinking & partying>>

Visiting New Orleans is even better when you travel with a person who's from there, chances are they know where the real food is, not the tourist crap. I wish I could remember the name of the place we went to, the hot sausage was amazing. They had a lot of good food.

My hotel room was insane, I waited too long to book so I ended up spending over $500 just for the weekend.

You could always uber from McClures to St. Charles and take the street car back.  The $5 is worth it not to walk in the heat.

It's not a long walk at all from the St. Charles street car. 10-15 minutes.

ETA: But it is hot

ETA2: Sidewalks are a mess because of tree roots too

Heading for NOLA Thursday!!

The forecast shows high 80s with thunderstorms.

Has it been raining consistently or is it a few showers here and there?

Would it still make sense to do a swamp tour even with the rain?

How dressed up do you have to be to get into most of the bars and clubs?

Where should I try a sazerac?

Can't wait to watch the Raiders and party in NOLA!

Thanks TF.

Ended up getting a room at Sheraton New Orleans through Priceline's "name your price." Placed a $100 offer and it was accepted.... $488 for 4 nights ($122/night) after taxes and fees. The prices above didn't have the taxes and fees included so this saved me $100 (Hampton would have cost $590 after fees or $627 if I booked Sheraton w/o naming my price). The trip so far is off to a good start.

Does Tipsy still run Dante's?

From the looks of it I want to check out Cafe Du Monde, ACME, and McClures for sure. Either Dante's or Jacques-Imo Cafe, possibly both.

Any more updates from the local folks on good places to eat to "New Orleans" cuisine?

Trip isn't until September so I've got plenty of time ot research.

Where are you staying?

NOLA Brewing (where Tipsy's BBQ is) can either be done Sunday night or Monday afternoon.  If the weather is nice on Sunday after the game, just walking through the french quarter or frenchman street would be a good option

Hit up Mr. B's, Palace Cafe, K-Pauls or Luke if you want a nicer new orleans style dinner

Summer in new orleans means afternoon showers a lot.  I don't think it would effect a swamp tour unless it's pouring that day.  Pretty casual for bars/clubs...if there's a specific one you're interested in, post it and I can let you know.

Sazerac - Roosevelt Hotel Bar (Sazerac Room) or Napoleon House

Thanks. No place in particular but just don't want how we're dressed to be a deterrent. By causal do you mean t-shirt and tennis shoes casual or at least a collared shirt?

In the French Quarter, Frenchman street area - you can walk in basically anywhere with t-shirt/tennis shoes.

Your music choices -

Saturday

Cha Wa Saturday at Maple Leaf at 11 - not sure when your reservation is at Jaque-Imos but the Leaf is right next door - Injuns here da come

Kermit is at Little Gem - but he'll end early.

Corey Henry Funktet at d.b.a on Frenchmen St at 11 (Corey plays with Galactic) - this band is a good one.

Maurice Mo Betta Brown and Big Sam at Blue Nile

Soul Rebels at Tipitinas - maybe my favorite Brass Band in the city

Sunday does not have any really of the big names in town going - most will be at ball game. So bar hopping in Quarter and Frenchmen would be pretty good. I would think there might be some pre-game show around the Dome

Monday night - Gary Clark is at the Civic - holy crap that would be awesome

Almost forgot - Monday night is King James and Special Men at Sidneys Saloon grab an Uber for some special old school New Orleans Rhythm and Blues and old Rock and Roll - really really really good band.Starts around 10:30

I like Sazeracs at Sobou and at French 75 - as well as Sazeracs in Roosevelt Hotel mentioned above.

See if a reservation could be had at Peche - it's not far from where you are.

Also try and hit up Cohon Butcher for Lunch - I think they do Sunday Breakfast/Brunch thing

GREAT STUFF!  Thanks

Probably gonna do the Raider parade on Sunday at 1000. S. Rampart and Poydras Ave in front of Little Gem Saloon.

They're gonna have a marching band for Raider fans to march to the Superdome.

For more info and Raider fan events checkout www.roadtriprallyparty.com

Bunch of Raiders fans out here.

we'll be there .  it's across the street from our hotel(hyatt)  i'll pm you my number.  text me.

Going to be there for the Hawks / Saints game then staying for Halloween. Lots of great info in here.

Staying with a group of friends near French Quarter. What would locals recommend for best neighborhood to bar hop and drink good beers and have coolest vibe for group of 40 year olds for Saturday night. We like the beer garden, old houses, food truck type vibe.

For Halloween night going to be in French Quarter.

TIA.

headed out for the day....but rebump this tomorrow if you don't mind.

Also, would highly recommend Frenchman street instead of french quarter for Halloween Night.

St Charles Pub is a good destination (go upstairs) and also Courtyard Brewery as they will have a food truck guaranteed. Those are both roughly Garden District.

Lots of excellent craft beer at Avenue pub - but a bit away from FQ, and not that much else around. Potentially start there and move steadily towards FQ

Food was nice too

Bump for Tiger Fan and other locals. Thanks for stuff so far. Found out one of the guys we have going down knows the area a bit which helps.

Looking for best gumbo as well.

Yeah, I think a good combo of what the folks above said...you won't be able to walk to any of these, but they're all a quick uber away from each other

Avenue Pub - best taps in the city

Courtyard Brewery - will have a food truck, very good brews, can sit outside in the nice weather (very much a dive place)

Nola Brewery - good brewery, plus you can eat Tipsy's BBQ!

Bulldog - another place with good taps (not as good as Avenue Pub).  I would make this the "last stop" as there are a few other bars you can walk to close to here before you head back to the quarter area.

Also, Voodoo Fest is next weekend, so there's gonna be a ton of people in the quarter late night (fest goes til 11 every night).  For before the Saints game, I'm a big fan of Handsome Willie's.....about a 10 minute walk from the quarter or a quick cab.....funky little dive bar that has a great atmosphere before the games.

For Gumbo....do you have any lunch/dinner plans so far?  If so, post them...there's a good chance there's good gumbo there.
Not yet. Probably get some loose plans in place next week. If you have a go to spot lemme know. Sounds like finding good gumbo won't be an issue.

Thanks everyone.

yeah, i wouldn't go anywhere specific for it (well....there's one place out in metairie, but not worth the trip out of the way when you're just there for the weekend).  You'll find good gumbo with no problem.

Awesome, thanks. One more thing any goto breakfast places in the French Quarter?

Great weekend and Halloween in New Orleans. Thank you for the info fellas. Frenchman Street on Saturday night was really great. Some awesome costumes. Made it out to some of the suggested places. Wish I had more time to hit the neighborhoods.

So many friendly people in your town, great people everywhere we went. Will be coming back with the wife next year.

I'm not drinking for a month.

Anything good going on in New Orleans the weekend of December 9th?

Thinking of making a quick trip down there.

Paging @Tiger Fan
Dragon Smoke at Tipitinas on Dec 10th - https://youtu.be/sKUz5_eWrmQ - one of the very best mash up bands in New Orleans history

What is Hotel 504?  Forget it too far.

Royal Sonesta $195

Bourbon Orleans $175

Maison Dupuy $131

Hotel Marazin $175

Monteleone $208

Marriott $108

Any of these better than the rest?  I just want to be able to walk around.  Assume that is doable at any of these.

@Tiger Fan

that's a helluva deal on the Marriott....very central location and a nice hotel.  I woudln't stay at the Mason Dupuy - wrong side of Bourbon.  Actually pretty good deals on the Sonesta and Monteleone as well....but not sure it's worth $100 more a night for just a few block difference.  Much easier (to get in and out via cab/uber )on Canal St. vs. heart of the quarter as well.

Here are two of my favorite places I've been in the past year.

Shaya - uptown...very hard to get reservations for...but if you're willing to sit at the bar, should only be a drink or two wait.  Everything can be shared, so it lends itself to "bar eating" better than other top restaurants
Doris Metropolitan - some of the best steak I've ever had
