== OFFICIAL OAKLAND RAIDERS 2018 thread == (1 Viewer)

Betting on or against the Raiders is a risky proposition just because of Carr. Is he going to bring his A game similar to the first half in Week 1? Or his F game--see second half of Week 2?

I see the Raiders rebounding and doing just enough to lose, perhaps the D giving up the winning score in the final minutes. Good grief, some were huffing and puffing last week and now they're in Denver???

This was the scene where things really started unraveling last year. They got punched in the mouth the week before by the Skins and Carr went down in this game tho the Raiders could have won if Cook hadn't alligator-armed a nice throw late from Manuel.

Broncos 20-16.
Nailed it

Bruce Irvin's unsportsmanlike and that dropped pass on 4th and inches are what jump out to me but a combo of lots of things in the end

Definitely.  I still can't believe they lost that game though.  The defense played well, didn't turn the ball over and Carr went 29-32.  Just a really, really tough loss.

It's the Raiders being Raiders just like the Browns are the Browns.  The Raiders play stupid with the easy dropped pass to convert the 4th down and the stupid penalty.

The Browns miss FGs.

The Raiders O looked better.  The lack of pass rush is pathetic.  If only the Raiders could have drafted an elite pass rush in the last few years.

After Trump, Gruden might be the most vilified man in America.  He is getting trashed by every member of the media.  I've seen an article that said he blamed Carr for the week 1 loss and would need to find someone else to blame for week 2 and another one that lumped him in with wilks and patricia as new coaches that had an awful week 2.  The Gruden hate has gotten completely out of control and over the top.  The Raiders played very well yesterday and had a great gameplan.

This.  I had to defend Gruden to a friend (Jets fan of all things) who said what's up with your coach throwing your QB under the bus after the loss? I was like where did you hear that? CBS sports...

regardless I was impressed with the gameplan and this team does look better coached than previous years. Carr bounced back nicely and had a great game, and  finally to see Cooper involved again was great.  No pass rush will be salt in the wound all year, but hopefully we see some more out of Key and other young guys, as they develop., literally 1 or 2 plays away from winning that game.  Like the double pass interference call??

A few things that stood out to me in the game.

First, the challenging:

  • Bruce Irvin's unsportsmanlike penalty.  You have to be better than that Bruce.
  • The Denver challenge and overturn of the spot of the ball.
  • The failed extra point conversation
  • Keith Smith dropping the pass and failing to convert the 4-1.   (I get the chess match of the NFL play calling, but Keith Smith shouldn't be targeted there with the other pass catchers on the roster imo)
  • The soft D on the final drive.  On back to back plays, the CB up on left sideline was stuck covering an under route and a deep route.   The first play failed to convert, the second resulted in a big play and easy FG for the Denver win.   I get the coverage because of the pressure/blitz.  But it was hard to watch.
  • The opportunity for the Mack Boo-Birds to use this game as a 'told you so'....
  • The Seth Roberts block/hold on the Marshawn run.   Bang bang play, but the call was made pretty easy as soon as Roberts put his hands in the air.
  • Arden Key has great speed, but often over runs the play.  For the moment he is playing at his top speed to where he thinks the play is going.  Bad read or not, he needs to adjust that part of his game to be a consistent impact player imo.
Second, the encouraging:

  • First Raider first half shut out since 2008
  • Raiders lead and maintained the lead in a game for all but 6 seconds of the game.  Good, bad, and ugly, this isn't the norm.
  • Carr bounce back game from a very rough performance on MNF in week 1.
  • Cooper back in the game plan.
  • The continued strong play of the offensive line.  Not a lot of talk about Von Miller in this game.
  • The Melvin interception was a great play by an individual player.
0-2 sucks.

Carr put up very Gannon-like stats. I expect most of his good games to look like that. High completion percentage, low yards per pass.

I didn't hear Bradley Chubbs name called once. Miller just might be the real deal. The commentators didn't even talk about either one of those guys, two 1st round draft picks going at it, and nothing but crickets. That's definitely a win for Miller.

Conley is gonna get picked on all season...

Typical, tough division loss for the Raiders. The more things change, the more they stay the same....

All great call-outs and analysis above. Not much to add aside from my shared frustration of watching one we should have won get away from us.

Would be good to see this team develop into one that actually has the ability to finish games.

A day removed from that game and I gotta say that I'm feeling better about this team.

We definitely should've won that game yesterday, but seeing Carr play so damn well, seeing Cooper step up big time, seeing our O-line (and rookie Left Tackle) play well against a top D line, seeing our VERY young, half-rookie D-line play tough most of the game....all those things lead me to be very hopeful heading into next week's game. We build on that performance, beat the Phins and Browns and we're at least at a decent 2-2.

When Mack was traded the question was raised as to how many games he was worth in the win column. I am putting this game down as 1 they would have won with his presence. I found it very ironic that Grudan was complaining about the lack of pressure after the game. ?

I found it interesting that on the last drive when they needed a first down Gruden took the ball out of Carr’s hands, and on the crucial third down Cooper didn’t apoear to be in the game.

He was asked by a reporter if the pass rush was good enough.  He said it wasn't and they would get it figured out.  It was obvious that it wasn't, what is he supposed to say?  Every coach analyzes and critiques their team on a regular basis especially after a loss.  When Gruden does it it's twisted into him blaming everyone for the loss.

So he was blaming himself for getting rid of the best pass rusher in the NFL?

Gruden is never going to live the Mack trade down.  It was a horrible decision and why this will be Gruden's last stop as HC as well.

At this point, we have to hope the Raiders lose games to get an earlier draft pick.  Of course, we have to keep hoping the Bears lose as well.  Trubisky is awful but that defense looks outstanding (Mack looks even better this year than last?) and will win games in spite of Trubisky.

No, he was answering a question he was asked honestly.

I wish Mack wasn't traded too, but I understand the thinking behind it.

If I hear Khalil Mack's name one more time I think I'm gonna lose my mind! I swear he did not get this much publicity when he was the Defensive Player of the Year 2 years ago... Mack mic'd up, Mack this, Mack that. It's like it's being rubbed in the Raider Nation's face, I can't even watch football shows anymore, its gotten ridiculous.

I think they lost more fans with this move than the actual move to Vegas. Its gonna be a rough couple years, time to put the blinders on and put in the ear plugs, or stop being a fan.

Good things are happening to this team, whether anyone chooses to see it or not is up to them.

They finally hit on a 1st round draft pick.

We saw a glimpse of what Carr/Cooper can do in this offense.

A DB got an INT before week 10. Without Mack on the team!

If we took the two first halves of the first two games, the Raiders D would be considered one of the best in the NFL. I know that's grasping for straws, but think about it.... There's light at the end of the tunnel.

All this whining and Gruden hate (resentment) needs to stop. Or go buy your new Mack jerseys and move on.

I know I'm still grieving, so won't call others lamenting the trade whiners, but I am trying to move on and look to the future, and the constant mentioning and second-guessing is futile.

Bears are clearly a better team with Mack, and their D will keep them in games so hoping for a Top 5 pick is not going to happen unless it's our own. But hoping for a front 16 pick at least, because grabbing two BPA at a position of need early in the draft is still a solid outcome -- we just need to keep hitting on picks.

Another reason why I really hope Gruden's coming doesn't mean an early exit for Reggie -- he's had ups and downs in terms of picking talent, but I think the team is better with him in the FO than without him, and we need every capable mind focused on maximizing what we got out of the Mack trade.

Expect disgruntled fans at least until fortunes on field turn around.

And expect resentment to rise if they don’t nail those two picks they got for him.

I totally get it. This is a transcendent player and they don’t come around often.

I’m thinking Lawrence Taylor/Derrick Thomas/Howie Long transcendent. Or in terms Gruden would understand: Mack is Sapp and Brooks rolled into one.

Even with my lousy memory I remember Mack two years ago taking over games against Carolina and Buffalo.

Those memories are hard for some to forget.

I get it. And understand. But the East Coast (Midwest) bias is real. Mic'ing up Mack last night was hilarious! And a perfect example of what I'm talking about. If anyone in the media actually paid attention to Mack when he was a Raider they would know, hes the most boring guy to mic up possible. All they got was some grunting and a couple " lets go!" hollars. He deserves all the run hes getting, but he'll let some people down if they're expecting a super star personality to go along with the super star talent.

As for Reggie... I don't know. I'm on the fence. I don't think he did a very good job overall when it came to the draft. He really only hit on 4 picks. Mack, Carr, Cooper and Jackson. Everyone else is gone or garbage (Conley excluded). Even Joseph lost his job and will probably be gone as soon as Gruden can get rid of him. If they can keep Reggie as the "capologist" and contract guy great, if not, I don't think he'll be back.

Who made you boss Rosie Glasses?  You will hear my whining and like it.  I have been a fan for over 30 years and couldn't stop if I wanted.

Are we really celebrating an INT before week 10 when we lost the game?  ...Yippee.  We got a meaningless INT.

I see 0-2 and a team that is going backwards after progress made in 2016.

Unfortunately, teams play 60 minutes and not 30 so the excitement over the D for the first 2 halves of football means little.

Thanks for putting me in my place lol. I've been a fan a lot longer than 30 years. I've watched Al Davis ruin this team until his death. Nothing phases me anymore with this dysfunctional organization. Like someone said, "I'm getting too old for this cr@p."

Why are you getting upset now? This team has been making bone-headed moves for the past 16-17 years. Now the Mack trade sets you off? I can't believe a long time fan is so shocked by another dumb decision.  Par for the course...

Gruden and Davis don't care what the fans think. Gruden is in year 1 of a 10 year contract. He has no pressure to win now and hes gonna lose more games than win the next couple years, get used to it. Either find a new team, or put on the rose-colored glasses, because that's all we got left. I'm too old to be miserable over a  damn sport, that's my choice.

I expected dysfunction with Al.  He was a crazy old man that had no clue about the modern NFL or how to evaluate players.

I am irritated now because Al Davis is gone and the dumb decisions should have stopped with his death.  This team was headed in the right direction and there was no good reason to get rid of Mack.  Every team wants to pressure the QB and the Raiders got rid of the guy that could do that better than anyone else in the league.  Mack is not going to be replaced.  Ever.

Obviously, Gruden and Davis don't care what the fans think.  I have my doubts that Gruden is capable of building a team but we wont know that answer for another two years, at least.

Im too old to be miserable over a damn sport too and not much bothers me...except the obviously brainless moves.  As a Raider fan, I am used to losing.  It is the stupid decisions that set me off.

You are correct, sir. Once they traded Mack it was clear evidence that winning isn’t a priority with this organization. After having lived through their record setting consectutive double digit losing seasons i am not willing to go through it again. What is the point? I can now sit back and watch this team flounder without any emotional investment.

I've been trying not to be emotionally invested for years. But I keep finding random Raider stock certficates in my closet.

You are absolutely correct, but here's the thing.... (puts rose-colored glasses on.) If Al were still alive, he would have either,  way over paid Mack or traded him for a 3rd rounder to a division rival. My point, he would have screwed it up somehow.

This is Gruden's team, and within 2 years all Reggie's players will probably be gone. Including Carr if he can't be more consistent. He wants to be like his old buddy Mike Holmgren, GM/HC. Looking at history, those situations almost never end well. I hope I'm wrong, but hes going down a dangerous path.

I don't know what else to say, other than we're on the same side, just different views. I'll always support the Raiders but for now, I've thrown up my hands. I've emotionally detached, like a bad marriage.  Dig up my old posts, I had a feeling they were gonna screw up the Mack situation,  I was bracing myself for another stupid move. So I guess I got over it faster than others.

Never thought I'd see the general apathy and resignation -- which we've seen from the actual team over the last few decades -- start to spill into the Raider faithful in this thread.

We've been #### before, we're looking like we could very well be #### again this year, and the one thing I value about the posters in this thread is that they don't sugar coat and speak truth without being blind homers, and can objectively see where the team's strengths are.

Let's not let this new form of seemingly team dysfunction distract us from the fact that there is still a lot to fix AND still a lot to be hopeful for, and let's not let resignation and frustration divide us or make us falter in our love of the Silver and Black.

If you need something to help get you over the hump, here you go. Our glory may be in the past, but let's use it to fuel hope that the future can be as bright.

I guess my recent apathy comes from two strong first half performances against two pretty good teams. They go into the locker rooms and come out and get out-coached and out-played. That really bothers me. Seems like no matter who's coaching, who's playing, year in and year out two things always seem to happen: Penalties and weak 3rd down play on both offense and defense. I'm just tired....

What i hate is telling OTHER fans of OTHER teams how good the Raiders will be when Gruden gets going...arguing we are a team of the future ...that going to Las Vegas will make the Raiders relevant again...and then seeing them lose game after game...its embarrassing ...i live in Boston so you can imagine the crap i get every week ...year after year...why cant they just get this thing turned around? Other teams do it all the time  :bag:

Start arguing that they are more consistent than the Patriots.

Haha. If it was the Mr. Hyde version of Al, I agree. If it was the Dr. Jekyll version, no way. In his sane days, he didn't set earth shattering for salaries as I recall. He'd pay a guy what he was worth and sometimes more. And I don't recollect any holdouts in Al's best days either. And he NEVER traded a guy coming into his prime. The closest was Marcus Allen (released if I remember right) and his best days were behind him.

We'll see -- MIA D has played well so far this year against both run and pass. ANd their O-line has played admirably after losing Sitton and while not league-winning, Drake and Gore have performed well. And we know what we are right now in terms of generating pass rush, and our LBs and backfield aren't stellar.

We have our work cut out for us, but seen enough to make me think we have a shot to control the game script and execute and keep the game close and within a winning shot, us being on the road on the East Coast notwithstanding.

ETA: I think our best shot is loading up against the run and ensuring we're covering Tannnehill's dink/dunk comfort zone, and force him to throw deep. We've had trouble covering deep downfield, but Tannehill is equally problematic in terms of decision-making and accuracy on the deep ball. Making MIA one-dimensional and forcing them to play to their weakness is the way to go here.

CODSWALLOP!!!

BEAST MODE GON' BEAST!!!

THE END!

0-2 sucks.

First loss was to the team pretty much everyone has on top of their power rankings and a popular pick to win the SB this year. A stacked team with great coaching that we not only stood up against but up until the 4th were legitimately in position to win. If you look at the game, if a couple of plays broke our way instead of how they did- we would have won.

Second loss, I did not see the game, but we lead pretty much the entire game, right? Sure, we should have won and it sucks that we lost at the end. The Donkeys are not a team that is an easy win even with a less than stellar offense they have a very solid defense.

0-2 sucks. It is not ever good to be 0-2. However, I think the loss of Mack colors this 0-2 more than it being 0-2 for many.

Now, I expect a win over Miami. If we do lose then ignore me because I will put myself on ignore as well.

Makes me wonder what kind of atmosphere there is in the locker room. While they had Mack, there was likely some enthusiasm in there. "Maybe we can win the division. Maybe we can make the playoffs. And then anything can happen."
Then Gruden trades Mack. All that enthusiasm probably went right out the window. And if it wasn't before the season started, it likely is now at 0-2.
Look at the vets in the roster (30 and older)--Cook, Irvin, Lynch, Nelson, Penn. They're probably saying, "WTH, any chance I had to win with this team and this coach just went to Chicago." (Well, who knows what Lynch is saying...)
And from the youngsters' point of view: "WTH, this guy will trade--or cut--anybody. But will he pay anybody?"
Gotta be deflating.

^^^I agree 100%. No way the Mack deal didn't crush the locker room. Gruden credibility alone, was worth more than two 1st picks.

Are mulligans a thing in the NFL?  Because I would like to buy one and give it to Gruden.
I think it's the way he handled it after rather than the actual deal, which can be explained with analyses like kosa's in this thread.

He's looked bad with what he's saying in the media. For somebody so savvy, he sounds like an out-of-touch, old school, high school coach.
