***OFFICIAL OKLAHOMA SOONERS FOOTBALL - SEC 11-1 *** (3 Viewers)

OU 45 UConn 10

Man I was really pulling for a better team to play OU, but it looks like OU is stuck playing the best worst team from the Big East. Prediction no one watches this game outside of OU/UConn fans. What a crap game.

I'll be in Arizona cheering on the Huskies. They will surprise alot of people, they have a solid D. And this is not the same team that started out shaky. Team really came on, won 5 in a row. The QB is the worst qb in Division 1, but the running game is their bread and butter.

TWO-MINUTE DRILL

Travis Lewis' two fumble recoveries against Nebraska surprisingly were the first two of his career. ... With his 47-yard reception in the third quarter, Ryan Broyles surpassed Mark Clayton as OU's career receiving yards and single-season receiving yards leader. Broyles finished the night with three receptions for 61 yards to give him 3,259 career receiving yards and 1,452 on the season. ... Quarterback Landry Jones now has 371 completions this season, breaking the OU single-season completions record. Current OU quarterbacks coach Josh Heupel previously held the record with 349 completions in 1999. Jones has 632 career completions, second all-time at OU and only trailing Heupel (654). ... Defensive end/tackle Pryce Macon became only the ninth Sooner ever to finish a game with at least five tackles for loss. ... Wideout Kenny Stills now owns the Sooner record for receiving yards in a season by a freshman with 709. Stills passed Broyles' 678-yard season in 2007. ... Stanford's Jim Harbaugh voted OU No. 5 in the final coaches poll. He was the only coach to have the Sooners in his top five. Colorado State's Steve Fairchild, Temple's Al Golden and Boise State's Chris Petersen all had the Sooners No. 12, the lowest coaches poll votes OU received.
Read more: http://newsok.com/ou-notebook-kevin-wilson...8#ixzz17IdD0jPMLet's schedule Colorado State, soon. Double #### Petersen and Boise, enjoy your ####ty bowl game knob. GB Jim Harbaugh, I can't really like him any more than I already do but if I could, I would after reading that.

If Wilson leaves I'll miss his game prep, but his playcalling after the first quarter is often predictable and somewhat stale. I'm a huge Leach fan, but his offenses are often too gimicky so I think Heupel and Mangino together could be a good fit.

I have no issue with playing UCONN in the Fiesta, I don't care who thinks it might be a boring game because it will certainly not be boring to me. Next year we are going to be preseason top 5, so these next 4 weeks of practice are critical for all our young guys as in-season practices are filled with specific game prep for the subsequent week. These practices offer a lot more one-on-one time, and the young guys get a lot of reps and game study.

OU fans were outnumbered at Jerryworld but we certainly gave it our all to try and make it loud when it counted. It was probably the best neutral site atmosphere I've ever experienced, that place was rocking.

I'm really happy with this season and a BCS bowl game win would really wrap up a nice effort from a team who we all knew was at least a year away. Jones grew by leaps and bounds, some underclassmen really stepped up, Beal and Murray finished tremendous careers at OU with great seasons, they beat Texas/Okie State/Nebraska and they finished the season playing their best football.

I'm guessing Harbaugh had a little bit of vested interest there, since there was a decent chance OU and Stanford would get matched up. Boost up the rank of your opponent so you can act like you're the underdog.

OU beat Stanford last year, I'd like to think that played into it also. Trying to find out why Colorado State has issues with OU, did OU have secks with their sisters?

UCONN is solid on D, I don't think this game will be a blowout. Will be interested in seeing the total on this game, should be interesting.I might go, I'm about 50/50 right now but will decide this week. I made hotel reservations in October for the game, so i have that going for me. Problem is the damn stadium is a long way from the airport and I'd rather not rent a car. The bowl packages offered through the Alumni Association are pricey, tickets not that cheap either ($195 for upper 50 yard line). Did you already get your tickets/make travel arrangements?

Just bought two goal line lowers for $153 total which includes shipping off Ebay. OU is selling theirs for $195 each, I looked on Stubhub and similar seats are going for $150 each plus the 10% fees and shipping.

I was just trying to test the market figuring if I got two lowers on the OU side for under $200 total that was a good deal. Guess this means I'll make the effort to go, maybe a family trip.

Haven't made arrangements yet. Cheapest roundtrip out of JFK I could find is 650. Oof. I do have a free one way trip from Jet Blue, but it is always tough to find eligible flights. I can use hotel points for a free weekend I am sure. Can't miss work, so I will likely leave Friday (get the day off) and come back Sunday. I am going to purchase the best tickets I can online. Looking for 50 yard lne, 20 rows or so up. Can't wait.

Indiana Hoosier season ticket holder, can you guys tell me more about Kevin Wilson? How much of Oklahoma's offensive firepower recently has been because of his direction/coaching vs just putting very talented players into positions to succeed?

If anything, the talent overcame unimaginative playcalling.

I kinda disagree with Christo. Landry Jones is already pretty much the most prolific passer in OU history, and a large part of that is direction/coaching. I think it's important to differentiate between the overall scheme and the play-calling. I think Wilson is a brilliant schemer, sometimes the actual play-calling can be a little uninventive though, especially as the game goes on. Wilson is very much willing to mix things up and experiment, we "stole" the diamond backfield from OSU within a couple weeks of them running it. I think it's a good hire for a program like Indiana, at the very least Wilson will be willing to take chances. I have no idea what kind of a recruiter he is, to be honest I think I've actually heard his voice only a couple of times.

If you like rb up the middle and wr screens he is your guy. OU has had a ton of success the past few years with his schemes, but I don't know how much of that is a heisman winning QB and dink and dunk passes to very good WR's. No ill will towards the man at this time, but his play calling was very predictable at times. I hope that he does go to Indiana and has a wonderful career.

Wonder who will take over at Offensive Coordinator? Jay Norvell? Heupel? Go outside and get someone like Mangino/Leach? Love to see Mike Leach or Mangina land in Norman, but I don't think they would take an assistant coaching job after being a HC. :crossing fingers:

I think Leach would definitely pass, but I wouldn't be surprised if Mangino took a coordinator position.

This is my concern...
Like I said earlier in the thread, his game prep and his actual coaching are very good. His play calling and his in-game adjustments are my issues but I think he'll work out just fine in Indiana where he won't have Sooner fans constantly yelling at him, and where he can have the freedom to run his own system without question.

Jay Norvell looks like the guy to be the Offensive Coordinator at OU. That is if Stoops follows his past coaching decisions.

OU football: Heupel the right call for StoopsPosted by berrytramelon December 13, 2010M at 5:49 pmBob Stoops did what I expected him to do: Make Josh Heupel the Sooners’ new offensive coordinator. Heupel and Jay Norvell have the title of co-coordinators, but Heupel has the play-calling duties.Which is best, I believe, if for no other reason than I like the offensive coordinator to be the quarterback coach.Quarterbacks these days are more than the trigger man. They are the communication liasons between coach and team. Football has become an instant-message sport. Plays are called from the sidelines, mostly via signal to the quarterback, and then are sent again while the offense is on the line of scrimmage. And sometimes even then the quarterback switches a call, based on the defense.Play-calling, as I’ve written 100 times and will write 100 times in the future, is overrated. Games are won and lost in the coaches room, where game plans are formulated. Coaches figure out on Sundays and Mondays what to do on Saturdays in certain situations, and the week is spent instilling that game plan into the minds of the offensive players, but mostly the quarterback.Doesn’t it seem best if the coordinator is the guy who works most closely with the quarterback? Coordinators do not formulate game plans on their own. Game plans are a community effort, which is why Jay Norvell’s co-coordinator title is not hollow. But someone has to make the snap decisions on Saturdays, and that someone will be Heupel.OU’s offense has flourished the past five seasons under Kevin Wilson, who tutored tight ends and fullbacks. It flourished in 2000 and 2001 (well, 2000 at least) with Mark Mangino as coordinator and offensive line coach. But a system works best when the quarterback coach, the guy who spends the most time getting in the mind of the all-important quarterback, is the coordinator.I like the promotion of Heupel. I think that will serve the Sooners best.
Very clever move by Stoops making Norvell and Heupel co-coordinators but giving the playcalling to Heupel. I think the two may butt heads at times but it's a two-headed monster which leads to more creativity.Norvell is already being mentioned as a HC candidate at a few places, but this is his chance to really make his mark and land a little better gig than Wilson did. I liked Wilson and he did a great job with the unit over the five years he was coordinator, but I do think a change was needed and Indiana provided the easy out.

OU football: Ex-QBs coaching in BCS

Posted by berrytramel

There are 10 BCS bowl teams this season. Oklahoma, Connecticut, Auburn, Oregon, Stanford, Virginia Tech, Arkansas, Ohio State, TCU and Wisconsin.

Three of those 10 employ former Sooner quarterbacks as their quarterback coach.

Josh Heupel, I assume you know about.

But Arkansas’ QB coach and offensive coordinator is Garrick McGee, OU’s 1994 quarterback and a stand-up guy during the turbulent 1995 season under Howard Schnellenberger.

And TCU’s QB coach and co-offensive coordinator is Justin Fuente, the par-time Sooner quarterback during the bleak John Blake years of 1996 and 1997.

Head coach Bobby Petrino is the primary play-caller for the Razorbacks, and co-offensive coordinator Jarrett Anderson is the primary play-caller for the Horned Frogs. But the career ascensions of McGee and Fuente have been remarkably quick.

And it’s a testament to both that they persevered through troubling times. Schnellenberger played Eric Moore over McGee in 1995, despite McGee’s solid 1994 season. McGee basically finished his college career in anonymity, as a backup on a bad team. Fuente transferred to Murray State of the Ohio Valley Conference after two platoon years with Moore and OU’s 1998 switch to the wishbone.

Yet there they will be in January, coaching two of the best quarterbacks cin college football in two of the biggest games: Arkansas’ Ryan Mallett in the Sugar Bowl against Ohio State and TCU’s Andy Dalton in the Rose Bowl against Wisconsin.

That’s hardly the career path of Heupel, who quarterbacked OU to the 2000 national title and seems to have been the crown prince ever since.

But there are many different roads to success. Kudos to Heupel, McGee and Fuente.

Sooners picked #1 in preseason poll

Sooners No. 1 in 2011 preview

The college football website Nationalchamps.net came out with its annual “Early Bird Top 25 Preview.”

And guess who’s No. 1 for 2011?

That’s right. Oklahoma is, according to the site.

“No question, the talent ladle has remained full over the course of the past decade and with 18 starters set to return 2011 will be no different,” is written in its analysis. “Quarterback Landry Jones really came on strong over the last month in this NASCAR no-huddle offensive approach. ... There seems to be no question that this group of returnees will continue to produce points. If (Bob) Stoops can get his defensive depth and talent to meet expectations, he will make another run at a title.”

Nationalchamps.net has done a fairly good job over the years of predicting what the preseason Associated Press Top 25 will look like.

If the Sooners get to No. 1, staying there won’t be easy. Nationalchamps.net also ranked five of OU’s 2011 opponents: No. 8 Missouri, No. 10 Texas A&M, No. 11 Oklahoma State, No. 18 Florida State and No. 25 Tulsa.

FWIW UCONN is #22 in that poll.whole thing here

Hopefully OU watched how an inferior Washington team dominated Big Red last night as a precaution to the game tomorrow. I really don't think OU will blow them out, especially if UCONN can establish a ground game and keep the OU offense off the field.

I ended up getting four tickets then reselling the originals I had so I'm going to the game for about $30 with parking and pregame party included. Not bad. I do have the feeling OU will be ready to play though.

Boomer Sooner! Sure wish we coulda beat a Stanford or Ohio State team, but a BCS win is just fine!!

I wish you would have played Boise State. Playing a team closer to you caliber of play makes for a more interesting game. Common man, Connecticut verse Oklahoma, what were they thinking. This cheapened BCS bowl and Oklahoma's victory shallow.I hate the BCS system. It is nothing more than the good old boys network.

Need to hire a special teams coach; that is all.
How about a coach whose sole job it is to walk up and slap every player who tries to deliver a knockout blow rather than wrapping up. It's not like someone left his lane and there was a big hole for that guy to run through on the kickoff. At least three guys were in position to make the play but every one of them dropped their heads and tried to knock him off his feet rather than just tackle him. I noticed the same thing on defense. 7-8 times an LB or S was in position to tackle that RB but tried to deliver a blow rather than just tackle him. If they'd just wrapped up, the RB would not have had 100 yards. That being said, the team showed great focus and ended up with a nice win to end the season. 12-2, Big 12 champs and a Fiesta Bowl win is a pretty damned good year.

This cheapened BCS bowl and Oklahoma's victory shallow.
No, not really. OU is a young team and Stoops had lost five straight BCS bowls. You must not follow college football, a BCS bowl win is a good win regardless and a loss bad, regardless. This Connecticut team was probably slightly worse than WVa was a couple of years ago and WVa crushed OU. A win is a win, a BCS Bowl is always good. Christo>Agreed, tackling was really bad last night.

OU must hire their cheerleaders based on talent or something... they're always horrible. It's weird, because there are gorgeous women all over campus.

That said, they usually don't hire dudes.

There were a ton of hot OU chicks at the game FWIW, usually the campus is pretty well littered with hot young ####.

OU fans were some thievin mo fos at the game. All the bags of Tostitos were gone before we sat down (every seat got a gift bag with chips) and while I was at the bathroom, some guy came buy and was gonna take my program. My friend said, "hey what are you doing?" The guy said, "oh is there someone sitting here? Because I was gonna take this." WTMF? Then they took my friend's souvenir cup that he left behind for 10 seconds. It's was like being around the Army out there, put it down and its gone.

Was this guy in your general vicinity? I saw him towards the end of the game and had to rewind as him and his lady? friend celebrated, realizing they were on the jumbotron, but I didn't snap a picture.

OU football notebook: Ronnell Lewis discharged from hospital

Lewis suffered a mild concussion and a neck injury on Saturday during the third quarter of the Fiesta Bowl.

Lewis walked off the field after the play, but minutes later, medical officials immobilized him on a board and he was taken on a cart to the Sooners' locker room, then was taken to a hospital.

Lewis is believed to have suffered an injury similar to what former OU tight end Brody Eldridge did last season. After wearing a neck brace for a few weeks, Eldridge made a full recovery.

OU head athletic trainer, Scott Anderson, said Monday that Lewis' prognosis is good.

Oklahoma fans are forced to hold their breath until perhaps as late as Jan. 15, the deadline for early entrants to declare for April's NFL Draft.

Sooners linebacker Travis Lewis and receiver Ryan Broyles, both juniors, reiterated throughout the week before the Fiesta Bowl, and after the game, that they're undecided and still pondering their futures.

At least one person with influence has weighed in with the pair on the situation: their coach, Bob Stoops.

During an informal session on Sunday, Stoops told reporters he advised both Lewis and Broyles to stay at Oklahoma for their senior seasons. Neither player has received their projection back from the draft's advisory committee, but a former member of the committee told The Oklahoman that he'd project Broyles as a late second round pick.

In late September, ESPN Draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. had Broyles as his No. 24 overall prospect, but dropped him out of his top 25 after Texas' defense blanketed Broyles with bracket coverage and held the receiver to a season-low 36 yards on five catches.

Stoops also told reporters that Broyles is close to finishing his degree.

"It’s got to be his choice," Stoops told reporters. "But he’ll be smart about it."

Lewis hinted all week that he was leaning toward staying, but never explicitly commented either way. Both will get a chance to take several days to reach a decision.

Now we all know the offense will be good next year despite losing Murray and maybe Broyles. You also lose two starting lineman (interior) but Jones and everyone else will be back.

Finch, Calhoun, Clay and the incoming class will IMo be a better rushing team than we had this year. Murray was so versatile that it was hard to ever take him off the field, but I also think this hurt us in 2nd and 5 or fewer and in 3rd and two or more. Rotating Finch, Calhoun, Clay and whoever we have coming in will allow OU to sustain drives better than they did this year, and they should be much better in short yardage situations. Throw in Millard and you have an excellent backfield but all but Calhoun are underclassmen and that probably means fumbles. We have gotten used to Murray not fumbling, so their will have to be patience there.

At WR Stills, Dejuan Miller and Franks will be back and if Broyles decides to return, that group is really deep.

The defense might be the best unit OU has had in a decade (although the 2009 team was pretty stout), although losing Beal hurts.

Alexander/King/McFarland/McGee up front with Walker also at tackle

If Travis Lewis comes back the LB corps is gonna be incredible. Wort, Lewis, Box and Ronnell who some say might move to being a stand-up DE/pass rusher like Beal. That is a really strong group and if McGee and McFarland can get low this team is gonna be tremendous against the run with the speed and athleticism of the LBs.

Secondary? Usually a soft spot but the co-Big12 defensive newcomer of the year Tony Jefferson makes me feel warm inside. I love this guy and he'll be at free safety next year or used in a variety of roles depending on the scenario. Fleming and Hurst really got better throughout the season and they are experienced and smart which should lead to a ton of interceptions for the two next year. Losing Nelson and Carter hurts some but I think Jefferson, Proctor and Harris along with a newcomer might be able to maintain the play we saw there this year.

Special teams are awful outside of Wey but Stevens is serviceable at least. The kickoff team needs so much work, they really need a coordinator.

I did not like the play calling in the 3rd quarter and early 4th of the Fiesta Bowl. Drive coming out of half was fine but they needed to slow it down with the score 34-17 and they kept pressing and throwing crossing routes. Run the ####### ball!!!!!!! Where the hell was Millard in the 3rd and 4th quarters? He barely played and I was waiting and waiting for them to go to the eye and pound out some yards. But the sets and schemes were fairly basic, I think Heupel did a good job getting in the plays (except once or twice) and I think he called a decent game overall. Not much variety though and I really think you need to run the ball when you are ahead, but he used Broyles in lieu of a run and that worked fine.

Anyway I was very pleased with the season as a whole. They should have won that TAMU game, but they could have lost the Air Force and maybe even the Cincinnati game so I guess it evened out. Mizzou kicked their ### pretty good, but for a team that had as many as nine true freshman making significant contributions, one ### kicking is just fine.

The schedule isn't easy, they will have as many as three ranked oppoenents in the first four weeks and that trip to Tallahassee is gonna be epic. They have to go to Stillwater for a second straight season, but they also get Techa Tech at home for a second straight season so I figure that evens out (plus OU is terrible in Lubbock). TAMU and Mizzou come to Norman, Kansas State could be a tough road game but outside FSU and OSU those games should all be wins. Texas will be better but shouldn't be good enough to beat OU.

Sooners LB Lewis coming back for senior year

January, 5, 2011

By David Ubben

Oklahoma linebacker Travis Lewis is coming back for his senior season, rather than enter the NFL draft.

"I’m coming back to win a national championship, point blank" Lewis said in a release. "Anything else would be a disappointment. That is the main goal. This is a program built on a tradition of championships and I intend on being here for another one."

Lewis has 362 career tackles, notching at least 108 stops in each of his three seasons on the field for the Sooners. That ranks ninth all-time in Oklahoma history.

"I woke up this morning and realized I had made my decision that I was coming back," he said. "I don’t want to give up being a Sooner yet. I’m having too much fun as one and this is an amazing place to be."

If Lewis leads the Sooners in tackles in 2011, he'll become the first Oklahoma player ever to accomplish the feat. Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said he advised both Lewis and receiver Ryan Broyles to come back for their senior seasons.

"I compliment Travis not only on being a great player, but on making a good decision for his future," Stoops said. "He is giving himself the chance to improve his status and opportunity with another year of college ball. He’ll work hard physically and he’ll have another year of playing experience. All of that will translate well to the NFL."

Oklahoma should have legitimate national championship aspirations in 2011, but those would grow exponentially if Broyles followed Lewis' lead. He's the next Sooner with a big decision to make, and has until Jan. 15 to make it.

If he comes back, you'll almost certainly have to look no lower than the top 5 to find Oklahoma in next year's preseason poll.

Ryan Broyles to stay at OU for senior year

By Staff Reports

Last Modified: 1/6/2011 6:35 PM

Oklahoma receiver Ryan Broyles will be back in 2011 for his senior season, the university announced Thursday night.

"We've got a chance to have a very good team next season and I really want to be part of that," Broyles said in a statement. "I like the guys on the team and the coaches, and feel like there is more we can accomplish. Being at OU means a lot to me. It's a great environment."

A junior from Norman, Broyles was a finalist for the Biletnikoff Award given to the nation's top receiver. He entered the bowl season first in the nation in receptions per game (9.36) and third in receiving yards per game (116).

This season, he caught 131 passes for more than 1,600 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Broyles also said he wanted to finish his degree.

"He's a great football player and leader," OU coach Bob Stoops said. "You just shake your head at some of the things he can do and yet he impacts our team equally in the way he handles himself in other aspects of our program. His return obviously strengthens us in many ways."

Recruiting status

Right now OU is ranked third in average per committment behind Texas and Alabama averaging 3.69 stars per recruit.

The big names are:

WR Trey Metoyer

RB Brandon Williams

DT Marquis Anderson

DE Nathan Hughes

All of Texas. One other guy is Jordan Phillips out of Kansas another DT so OU filled it's most pressing need with three of the top defensive lineman coming out of High School nationwide. Getting CB Bennett Okotcha away from ND doesn't hurt either as the Sooners can always use more good talent in the secondary and Okotcha seems like a guy who can contribute in the nickel this year.

Metoyer is an immediate impact player, Scout and Rivals has him 1st and 2nd in the nation respectively at WR and apparently he has sticky hands.

On the Hoof: Muscular shoulders, long arms and large hands. His legs are long and built like an elite high jumper. His build is most similar to Hakeem Nicks when he was coming out of high school.

Needs Improvement: Could improve overall speed. He is just a tad stiff in the hips and increasing flexibility in his lower body could make him more dangerous when in space.

Most Impressive: Does a nice job catching the ball with his hands away from his body while shielding the defender from making a play. His body control is excellent as he can adjust to poorly thrown balls once they are in the air. Metoyer runs excellent routes and does not need to be open to make a play.

Conclusion: If Metoyer shows off great hands and is willing to block on running plays, he surely will make a big splash early in his career. Look for him to become an all-conference performer before his career is finished
Small class but it's not the quantity that counts this year, it's the quality. Very nice effort.

OU is also said to be the frontrunner for the nation's #1 recruit in 2012, WR Dorial Green-Beckham. Apparently this guy is like Calvin Johnson with world class track speed.

The Detroit News

What has former Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez been up to since being fired in January after three seasons with the Wolverines?

Well, on Friday he was spotted at Oklahoma's spring practice.

A photo of former Rodriguez, wearing an Oklahoma polo shirt and standing with OU coach Bob Stoops, made the Twitter rounds Friday.

Rodriguez has been in Norman visiting OU's spring workouts, the Oklahoman reported Saturday.

How could he possibly have been spotted at a practice?Every time I walk by our practice field there are so many security guards...the hedges are gigantic...I'm amazed that people can "spot" anything in there. I must be missing something.

In the picture I saw they were actually in the stadium. There are reporters, etc. at practice, it's not some random dude walking down Lindsey.
