***Official Pearl Jam Thread*** (4 Viewers)

After the first 3 or 4 songs (some of which is arguable itself), there isn't anything remotely punky to me. I thought everyone complained The Fixer was too "poppy"? Obviously everyone is entitled to their opinion, but when I read the negative stuff on the PJ boards, it's kinda the same thing. PJ is too punky here...too much like U2...they didn't spend time on this (Tuolome sp? with words, Supersonic/Mankind, etc)...no creativity on the album...etc etc. I think it's all a bit funny. PJ is PJ to me. :kicksrock:

I'd be interested to know if they jammed out any of the new songs the past two nights. A few of the songs on the album leave a little bit open at the end.....

I still have 0 complaints except that the two ballads are a bit dull to me. Not horrible, just dull. Rest of it roxor IMO.

They haven't made a flawless album since their first one, so yeah a couple flaws are to be expected. Like most of their work, this one mostly kicks butt. Can't see how anybody who's a Pearl Jam fan could be disappointed, other than in the length.

:confused:I like the ballads, though. It's not flawless, but it's solid as hell top to bottm, it's a fun listen.

I think it is solid the whole way through. My only complaint is there are no real "great" songs in the group, though.I rate PJ songs on a 4 point scale.4-Great songs that never get old and I can listen to at anytime without needing to be in a PJ mood (Alive, RVM, etc etc). I put 2-3 songs from each CD on this list.3-Good songs I thouroughly enjoy, but either I can hear them too many times, or I have to be in the right mood (Daughter, Once, Market in the Sand, I am Mine). A little less than half their catalogue I'd put in this category.2-Songs that are OK, I don't hate them, but I'm not putting in a CD to listen to this song in particular, but I won't skip it either (WMA, Whipping, just about everything on Riot Act).1-Filler that I don't really enjoy. I'll skip this stuff, and don't really need to hear it again (Rats, foxymophandlemama, etc.).For Backspacer, there are a lot of 2s and 3s, but I haven't found any 4s yet. That's my only complaint.

What are your 4's on Self Titled? I think you basically said there are none on Riot Act. Just curious...

My 4s on Self Titled would be World Wide Suicide, Life Wasted and Unemployed (I know I'm going to be in the minority in that choice). Self Titled is one of my favorite albums, and there's probably only two tracks I'd give less than a 3 (Parachutes & Wasted Reprise). And no, I wouldn't give anything on Riot Act a 4, personally.

I love Parachutes, one of my faves on s/t. I think I'm the only one. Has much more personality to me than either of the new slow tunesI'd give LBC a 4, maybe Save You, but Riot Act is mostly just alright (and then there's bushleaguer)On the new one, Got Some is a 4 for me, for sure. I think the fanbase is gonna be gaga for Amongst the Waves in due time, very anthemic, a better singalong than anything on PJ. Unthought Known, Speed of Sound and Force of Nature are still getting better for me. It's not like I listen to this nonstop but I've listened 5-6 times and I played it all on Rock Band today.

Unthought Known and Against the Waves are strong 4's IMO.

Unthought Known is extremely strong.....I don't even think it has a chorus, just a wonderful vocal arrangement.

HTF did I not know this thing is on rock band

Not a huge fan of Backspacer, but it's not bad. Reminds me of the Ramones for some reason. As mentioned, missing some Mike and some Eddie anger. I liked them better with Bush in the White House. Interesting review on AllMusic saying that this is their "party" album and they're having fun and letting loose. Probably true, but I like them better angry.
What songs remind you of the Ramone's? I'm not big into them really, so I don't know for sure, but I have a hard time imagining the Ramone's on about 3/4's of this album. I'm also enjoying the shortage of political lyrics for once. As I believe TU mentioned, at times in the past it seemed forced.
Not sure, just the beginning. The Ramones make me think of three things: fast pace, lots of repetition and short songs. So maybe that's why I thought of them. :goodposting:

See, I think self titled was just about flawless. Give me that, Ten and Vs. and I'm happy. And the bottom end for me were Binaural and Riot Act.

I don't think it's a far fetched to say that if Unthought Known was the 1st single released off this album some interesting stuff would be going on right now as far as sales go. Regardless, it will be interesting to see how this does.I also think both can be "anthemic" in time.

Just finished playing about half of Backspacer on Rock Band.....very fun way to "learn the album"....

I know I keep posting this, but Unthought Known is clearly my favorite song on the album. I really think this song is flawless.....and will be amazing live.

ETA:

- played it a little to fast IMO, but still solid

So Eddie was taking a dump and looking at that picture. Wonder which chick he liked... guessing the Asian. Johnny then made it onto the Backspacer cover, in an even uglier suit.

It's funny, a few days before the album came out, I saw an old movie on cable called Johnny Guitar. I avoided all the early leaks from the album, but I knew there was a song by the name. I wondered for a second if the song was going to be about the movie, kind of a "For Whom the Bells Tolls" kind of thing. I didn't watch the movie, but looking at IMDB, and reading the above, obviously they do not have anything to do with each other.Everyone is giving Unthought Known such rave reviews, I guess that will be my next download on Rock Band and I'll see if it hooks me.

Pearl Jam is on course to nab its first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart in 13 years. Industry prognosticators suggest the band's new "Backspacer," released on Sunday, Sept. 20, could shift anywhere between 175,000 to 200,000 copies by week's end. That sales figure should easily place it ahead of the competition on next week's Billboard 200 chart.

The new album -- its first not with a major label -- is sold exclusively in the United States through Target, iTunes, Pearl Jam's Web site and independent retailers.

The group's last studio release, 2006's self-titled J Records set, bowed at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 with 279,000 according to Nielsen SoundScan in its first week. The band last graced the No. 1 slot way back in 1996, when "No Code" became its third chart-topper when it debuted in the penthouse.

Since "No Code," the group has notched three No. 2 albums ("Yield," "Binaural" and "Pearl Jam") and a No. 5 set with "Riot Act" in 2002.

lol

My post was just informational. I'm not very suprised by the news actually. It's not like anyone else of note came out with a new album this week. IIRC, Self Titled came out the same week Tool's new album came out.

What interests me is how many it will ultimately sell. I don't think they've gone platinum since Yield.

I can easily see "Supersonic" being a Ramones song if you took all the harmony and complexity out of the vocals.

It did, and Tool sold over 500,000 units the first week, easily outdistancing Pearl Jam. That was a great week for me. My arms were so tired between switching CDs and masturbating, I had to take a few days off.

I don't see this one breaking that trend.

Me either. But like I said yesterday, I think there could have been a bigger push out of the gate with a different song released, and who knows what that could have meant.I also don't think the numbers in that article will include Sunday/Monday, which could be substantial. I could be wrong on this though, but I thought the weeks start on Tuesday.and that's some funny #### Evilgrin. lol

SweetThanks Judd!

Was just thinking about Ed lambasting that kook in Chicago, loved that.

Seattle II wasn't one of my finer nights, not much to report. I had trouble finding good seats and stuff. Got there late, missing Ben Harper. Drank too much earlier in the day out on some porch with great margs, and it spilled over. Was taking this waitress to the show, who left mid-shift to meet me, but left my phone at the hotel and couldn't go back...idiot.

The end of the show (encore) was great however, I remember that much. Found a good seat/area up a little from Mike. Okay, Supersonic is now a favorite...

Canucks game last night was awesome, even if it was pre-season. Great comeback, crowd went nuts. Man, are they into the Canucks. We were right behind the net for two great shootout goals. Sleeping it off today...

Thanks for the DL, Jzilla.

I am enjoying it more every time I listen to it, which is twice a day on the commute.

First three songs are growing on me but I still like Just Breathe the best. I do find it interesting how many songs lyrics and music was composed by Eddie. What is the breakdown on the first album. Would check but I have the CD booklet hanging up in my CD booklet display

Eddie wrote all the lyrics on TenThe music was written by the name(s) listed here:

# Title Music Length

1. "Once" Stone Gossard 3:51

2. "Even Flow" Gossard 4:53

3. "Alive" Gossard 5:40

4. "Why Go" Jeff Ament 3:19

5. "Black" Gossard 5:43

6. "Jeremy" Ament 5:18

7. "Oceans" Vedder, Gossard, Ament 2:41

8. "Porch" Vedder 3:30

9. "Garden" Gossard, Ament 4:58

10. "Deep" Gossard, Ament 4:18

11. "Release" Ament, Gossard, Dave Krusen, Mike McCready, Vedder 9:0

Thanks TU. That is what I figured and I figured Ed wrote all lyrics. Only wrote one song and contributed on 2 others.

I guess I was thinking what the other guys in the band have been doing. Its been a long time since a Brad or Mad Season album came out.

So I just searched about 10-15 different sites for 10/30 tickets and every site looked to have the same set of tickets available. These are just brokers throwing them up on every site in imaginable? Wonder if as we get closer they will start to move them or will most of these seats be had in the lots preshow?

I can also see them moving the tickets on Tues/Wed night for Friday. My fear is getting to the venue on Friday and not being able to find crap. Am I worrying too much?

whats the song on backspacer thats kinda slower and kinda acoustic? sounds like a pantented eddie vedder chorus???

heard the record once and cant remember

I would be very surprised if you coudln't find a ticket for FridaySaturday might be tough, but Friday should be OKThere's always a ticket to be had, in my experience

Sounds good. We're all set with tickets for Saturday (we may need 1 or 2 depending if a few others jump on board, but I'm not worried about that). No sense just heading in for the one show. I'll touch base with a few of you guys the week before the show and give you my cell phone number. Just in case you guys run into a good deal in the lots before I get in. I'm sure you or Vedder wouldn't mind shooting me a text and I can let you know where I'm at. Maybe the seller would hold onto them until I got there.

Bobcat and co., just a heads up on tickets...

I just got a single on TM that is front row, right on the corner of the stage, Stone's side. There was also a pair available, 3rd row in the same great section. IMO, unless you are first 5 rows on the floor, there isn't a better seat.

Point being, they release some select seats on the day of the show that they have been "holding" for friends/family/whatever, and they do it often.

I'm just gonna sell my other ticket before the show. And 9 times out of 10 I'll find a fan to sell it to for face -- you can tell who the scalpers are.

Anyway, looking forward to tonight, even though I'm sick, ### #### it...

Ya I've heard that. Do you know when they normally pop up online? The problem is I'll be driving 7+ hrs that day.

Checking in with all of my PJ peeps. One month out from Philly!!

Two week Backspacer thoughts: still love the album with minor gripes. Gripe 1: way too short. Gripe 2: it is a really easy listen, maybe to easy (for me at least) I tend to like the deeper, meatier PJ stuff a little more musically and lyrically. Lyrically, the album is pretty weak for me and the music is kinda plain jane. Not a bad thing, just not my cup of tea as it relates to PJ. I can't put it near the top of my PJ album list for these reasons. Just Breathe has really grown on me, and I still love Johnny Guitar.

Bobcat, from what I've seen, Friday is the most expensive ticket of the 4 shows for brokers. If you recall, the Friday show was originally billed as THE last Spectrum show (before Oct 31 was added). It seems like Friday is gonna be a big show for casual fans and Saturday is more of a 10 Club fest (easier ticket too because of kids/Halloween obligations for the old folks)

I am looking for a single ticket for Friday and Saturday if anyone is selling. I haven't renewed my 10C membership in about 5 years and missed out on the public onsale. Most of my crew are using their extra tickets for these shows on wives and girlfriends.

I welcome you all to join my tailgate all 4 nights and we can hammer out the details as it gets closer.

I'm looking for a single for Wednesday just FYI. If nothing else I'll just pick one up on the way in. Locked in with Tupside on the other 3.

I was talking to my dad in St. Louis on the phone the other night.. he was talking about me possibly flying in for Thanksgiving, because my 90 year old grandmother has suddenly decided to fly in unless she changes her mind because of swine flu.. I told him, well I'll see how the money falls together.. right now I've got plans for the last week of October, I'm going to see 4 Pearl Jam shows in Philly. He paused and said, "well.. that sounds like a good priority." I said yeah man, it's history you ####### hippie.

Yeah...didn't help Halloween was onsale later. There are alot of people like us who have Saturday tickets that now want to go Friday. I'm sure we'll be swinging by the t'gate. We won't have a car in the lot either night since we're walking distance...so just depends how much pregame we do at the hotel and/or hotel bar.
