If I were a pirate fan, I would want the pirates to invest all that money coming off the nooks on the draft and international players, while looking for cheap veterans on short term deals. No free agent due big money will go to the Pirates(just like they wont go to the Rays). In order to build a playoff team, the players will have to come from within the system, like Tampa. The Pirates, to their credit, seem to realize this. For 2 years, they have poured money into the draft and international players.
Long way to go.http://pittsburgh.sbnation.com/pittsburgh-pirates/2011/8/8/2350947/pirates-minor-league-prospects-jameson-taillon-tony-sanchez

No question. The Pirates only got serious about ponying money for the draft two years ago. Not going to see any results for a few years at least. Before they were selecting only signable players like Tony Sanchez, not players that were worth the spot talent wise.

They have been negotiating. I doubt anything gets done though. If it does, it is because he decides he wants to stay in Pittsburgh for less money.

He's arbitration eligible this off-season. The Pirates and McCutchen can take their chances on year-to-year deals, or they can bet on the come for the longer term. I'm sure the Bucs will want to buy at least his first year of free agency while McCutchen's people will want to keep it to four years.

My friend, I would love to believe you on what management ought to do with McCutchen. You articulate a sensible course of action. But using terms like Bucs and buy in the same statement tends to be a leap of faith.

Reading about how hard Gerritt Cole is throwing in workouts is pointless. Why did the team draft him? To hit 70 mph on the radar gun? The guy is supposed to be a stud. If he is not hitting 90-100 mph, now that would be newsworthy. And instead of quoting what Frank Coonelly said at some Altoona function about bringing Pgh a winner (which, again, is tired old rhetoric), why don't journalists ask him about the plan designed to make that outcome a reality?

Nice snowstorm up in PA & WV to help the Nuttings get off to a good season in the ski resort business. Hope it translates to something constructive for other Nutting business ventures, starting with baseball.

Let's see if they offer Jose Reyes some $$
Well, they just turned down the $3 million option on Ronny Cedeno.
That's a month's worth of Reyes
True. They need to play up the Clemente stuff more with the Latin-American players, especially at the recruiting level where prospects' parents might actually have good memories of the Pirates. Clemente's son needs to be the latin american player development head or something.

Or you know, hire someone with some talent for the position.

One figure head and one person with evaluation/scouting acumen.

With Sabathia signing an extension to pitch for the Yanks and earn about 24.4 million for next season alone, I guess it is just as well the Pirates didn't put in a bid.

Pirates sign catcher Barajas

Thursday, November 10, 2011

Bill Brink, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Pirates filled their hole at catcher, signing Rod Barajas to a one-year deal for 2012 with a club option for 2013, the club announced Thursday.

Barajas, 36, hit .230 with 16 home runs and 47 RBIs last season for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

"They were aggressive," Barajas said on a conference call from the Pittsburgh airport, where he awaited a flight back to California. "They definitely showed that they wanted me to be a part of their team."

According to an industry source, Barajas will make $4 million in 2012 with a $3.5 million club option in 2013 and no buyout.

The Pirates needed a starting catcher after declining to exercise options on Ryan Doumit and Chris Snyder. Barajas played in 88 games as a catcher last season. General manager Neal Huntington said Barajas will be the team's primary catcher.

"There's no question that it was a limited market free agent-wise," Huntington said on a conference call. "We determined our best course of action was to be aggressive with the guy we wanted. In Rod's case, he liked the fit, we liked the fit and we were able to get it done."

Barajas said he had offers from other teams, but the ability to be the primary catcher, among other variables, factored into his decision.

"I feel like I can definitely be a plus to any team," he said. "I'm not a big average guy, I'm not a high on-base percentage guy. But I can hit the ball out of the park, I can get some extra-base hits."

Barajas saw the current version of the Pirates from the opposing dugout in 2011 and said the energy stood out to him.

"You could definitely see they were having fun playing the game," he said. "That's one thing you love to see when you look across the field. Coming in to play them, they definitely have this fun attitude."

Huntington said Jason Jaramillo and Michael McKenry have the chance to back up Barajas.

At 4 million a year, Barajas and Correia are now the 2 highest paid players on the club, I believe.

Draw your own conclusion as to what that represents.

For a team that continually sells off their best players because they cannot afford to keep them, this has to be painful. Sorry guys.

1 year deal with a club option. Nothing wrong with the signing at all. Barajas has pop, and they are not committed long term.

Nothing wrong with getting Barajas. What I was intimatin' was that if he and a washed-up pitcher are the top salary guys, then "Houston, we have a problem" and you can go ahead and surpass us in the NL Central.

Yeah, not big news that their payroll is small. They need to lockup McCutcheon either in the offseason or early in the season. I think fans can tolerate losing if management shows they are executing a plan. In this case, one part of the plan is clear, Pittsburgh has poured money into the last two drafts. Kudos to them. But to get into a contending level, they need to identify and lockup their solid young players. McCutcheon is clearly one of them.

Clint Barmes, $10.5mil for 2 years. Better than Ciriaco, Jordy Mercer or Chase D'Arnaud? Probably. Better than paying Ronny Cedeno $3mil and spending the rest elsewhere? I'm not sure. I like the signing in a vacuum.

I know the Pirates have a hard time attracting elite FAs, but if they can get Carlos Pena or Derrek Lee for 1B, at least that's a little step up that might help them improve their image. (So would winning!)

So as long as they can still find the 8mil or so that Lee/Pena would want, I'm fine with this move. But if it was a choice between Lee/Cedeno or Barmes/Garrett Jones, I'd rather have Lee/Cedeno.

I was surprised to see Barmes will be 33 on opening day. He can play multiple IF positions and is a pretty good fielder but he's never managed a 100 OPS+ season in spite of playing parts of eight years in Colorado. At least Hurdle should be familiar with how to use him. It seems like a lot of money for a mediocre talent but SS is a thin position.

Cliff Barnes? From Texas? J. R. Ewing used to get the best of him every time.

Wait, Clint Barmes? Hurdle's former Colorado player? Great. When do playoff tickets go on sale?

FWIW, Barmes is considered to be a top 5 defensive player (by UZR metrics).

Offense obviously not forte, but manged to hit .244 and 12 hr's though, so decent pop.

I consider him a slight upgrade over Cedeno, not a terrible signing.
