8.15 flex -- ILLMATIC ALBUM COVER

We've reached the point of the draft where guys like Krayzie Bone are being selected. I'd rather not muck my supergroup up with some kind of hack, so with my flex pick, I give the greatest group ever the greatest album cover ever.
Yo, that Illmatic album cover is nice, son, but it ain't got nothin' on Big Bear's album cover!

Yo, if you don't like Big Bear, maybe Lil' Flip's "The Leprechaun" is more your style? Right up there with Illmatic and Return to the 36, yo.

FLEX-

Could go anywhere here.... going to go with a singer that is at home over soulfull melody's as well as hip-hop beats ..likes to do drugs, bang rappers and is dead.

.............no , not Mya...she is still alive.

AMY WINEHOUSE

only two albums , her debut Frank was great and Back to Black was PERFECT.

Her and Ghostface

F' Me Pumps..... One of my favorites.

ps-- not a huge fan of this flex being added mid-draft and the fact it could be anything...but love Amy Winehouse.

Yeah, I thought this was an MC/producer draft. I don't think Mary J, Badu or Winehouse really fit the criteria. If that's the case, give me Marvin Gaye for my flex.

agreed.

For my flex im moving Lauryn Hill to the flex spot.

My last pick will be Elzhi - MC.

Will post links later. But if you don't know who he is go youtube motown 25 or listen to the elmatic mixtape.

ETA: was going to pick def jam as a flex. but this whole flex thing confuses me. so i went with Elzhi. Dude is a beast on the mic and top 3 lyricist right now.

Random post draft thoughts.

Shocked, shocked O.C. didn't get drafted. He's in my top 15, but by the time I was ready to pull the trigger I felt I had too many NYC MCs already. Styles P deserved to get drafted in this. He's right up there with Jada in my mind.

I really thought about drafting Lil Kim, but I couldn't pull the trigger on someone who didn't write her own rhymes when she was doing her best work. Also thought about drafting Eve. Had King T on my short list as well. If the draft had been longer I definitely would've taken him.

Boston got NO love in this.

Best producers left on the board.

Scott Storch - Not really a fan of his, but he's made some hits and I thought he'd find a home. He played keyboard on the early Roots albums.

Ant Banks - Kind of a west coast legend. Figured he'd end up on Cliff's squad.

K-Def - One of the best producers of the golden era that you've never heard of. He is a disciple of Marley Marl and got his start producing the Lords of the Underground LPs with Marley. All of the hit singles Lords had off the first LP were done by K-Def. He did some production for Da Youngstas on their 3rd LP and did about half of the Intelligent Hoodlum LP. From there he teamed up with rapper Larry-O to form Real Live and, from a production standpoint, dropped a near flawless album. Pretty much fell off the face of the planet after that. This was the producer I was gonna draft in the 7th round as my sleeper after all the big names were off the board, but no way I could let Showbiz go undrafted since he's top 10 to me.

7L - Producer from Boston. Really like his work and I thought he might have some supporters in this draft. He may be a little too unknown.

Necro - Not a fan of his rapping, but he comes with some nice production at times. Figured he had an outside chance of being drafted, especially with a guy like Stoupe being taken.

Will post more as I think of it.

Yep, O.C. being left off was a crime. Same goes for Ed OG. Looked at drafting those guys but didn't want my squad to be stuck in the 90s and needed some current flavor.

all in all, i thought it was a very good draft.

would have loved to go a few more rounds.

i am looking forward to hearing who others had on their radar.

I know hip hop is a male dominated genre, but I'm shocked MC Lyte didn't get drafted - she had so many classic cuts and IMO she's second only to Lauryn Hill as a "femcee". I considered her for my final pick but didn't think she quite fit in with my collective.

Regarding O.C. it came down to a tossup between him and Killah Priest for my last pick. I was surprised he didn't get drafted as well, athough I wouldn't consider him top 15 material like Sac Bob.

others undrafted:

Everlast

MC Lyte

Brother J

anyone from 3rd Base

Run or DMC

no beastie boys drafted
Not shocking - none of them stand out over the other, and they're the epitome of a group where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. None of them as individuals would fare well in a group format like this, and I'm as big of a Beastie fan as there is.Along those lines I was a little shocked that neither Run nor DMC got drafted - but again, their output as a group is so great that it's difficult to separate one from the other in this format.

some folks on my list that didnt get drafted:

chino xl

Tech N9ne

chamillionaire

bun b

jay electronica

khrysis
Tech N9ne should have been drafted over several of the dudes who were selected. Also agree with scoobus on Twista. And I think early and late Brotha Lynch Hung deserved some love, as well as Yelawolf (though I understand he has a limited body of work). :banned:
