Olney has a quick breakdown on it

http://insider.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index...%3dolney_buster

Mostly insider, but the important part is not

Truth No. 1: The Red Sox catchers will be almost helpless in trying to throw out baserunners, and the Angels have a bunch of guys who will challenge them on the bases.

Truth No. 2: The Angels have a bunch of guys who struggle to hit good fastballs, and the Red Sox are loaded with guys who throw really, really hard.

Oof. Horrible call on kendrick there.

4th inning should be over. Hopefully it doesn't produce a BS run in a close game...

Anything that goes that far oughta have a stewardess on it, no?

Still think the Sox take this series in 5, but what a shot that was!

Jesus christ....two HORRIBLE calls at first now. Unreal. Buckner have some cash on the Angels?!

Wow....

Two terrible terrible calls. That was out by 3-4 feet. Unreal.

Echo, echo...What the hell is going on at 1B tonight? Only thing I can think is that he saw Youk try to stick his foot out at the bag a second time and assumed he had missed it initially. But still, it's pretty plain to see that he got it.

"A 2003 Sports Illustrated survey of MLB players and managers pegged the 5 worst umps in the league at 1: CB Bucknor, 2:Bruce Froemming, 3:Joe Brinkman, 4:Joe West, 5:Angel Hernandez. Bucknor was a runaway winner, picking up 20% of the votes."

Angel Hernandez is by far the worst home plate umpire in baseball (guy was on 3rd in the Phils/Stones game today), Bucknor not bad at home but he's known for his bad check swing calls. I think Froemming is decent.

meh.. this was voted on by MLB Players and managers and players. What do they know. Interesting you think Bucknor is not at home... from the same survey of MLB Players and Managers:

"Bucknor’s strike-zone has always been among the worst in the game. To call it tight would be an understatement. This guy lives for confrontation. Watch a Bucknor game and see how many times he takes the mask off and glares at the pitcher."

You did see that was a 2003 survey right?

Good point. Tonight is evidence he's MUCH improved.
Oof. I've watched a few games with him behind the plate and there was no controversy. Didn't say he was great, I suppose you'll get a chance to see him there in this series to decide for yourself.

Good game for the Angels tonight. The Sox got squeezed on some calls that while not making a huge impact still altered who was up when. Boston was not going to win this game anyway as they were not putting anything together offensively. Tip your hat to Anaheim and move on to Game 2.

i was sitting on the first base line. horrible horrible night for the umps 7 especially the 1st base ump. he was getting grief from both sides all night.

Not sure who Im rooting for here. On one hand the Yanks have a much better shot of beating the Sox on the other hand I hate the ####in Sox.

I'm not openly "rooting" for the Red Sox, but those series in 03-04 were some of the most fun games I've ever watched. I'd love to see it again, but in all honesty it's gonna be a rough go against either of them if we get by the Twins.

I would've guessed Angel Hernandez would be the worst at home plate. That guy's got a huge chip on his shoulder, which doesn't go very well with the enormous rabbit ears that he wears.

I wouldnt call them fun, Id call them extremely stressful

If the Angels lose the series, pretty good chance it will be because of Vlad, which is really nothing new when looking back on their other recent playoff appearances.

The guys at bats, particularly with RISP, are downright laughable.

The Wild Card. Boston's best friend.
Billion dollar wiffleball park. New York's best friend.
I'm pretty sure they don't move the fences out when the visiting team is hitting.
I'm pretty sure most teams don't build their personnel acquisition and hitting strategy around hitting fly balls that wouldn't reach the warning track in a bunch of ballparks.
The only spot that is questionable compared to the old ballpark is from the corner in right to right centefield. It seems to me that in the new park, it doesn't bow out like in the old park. The seating in the new park is much closer to the walls than in the old park, and that certainly gives it the appearance that it is shorter. Tons of balls still die out when they are hit to Left center.Of course, you have to leave it to Red Sox fans to complain about the Yankees in a Red Sox/Angels thread.

This series is over. Red Sox look like they did the week they played the Yankees and didn't score a run in like 26 straight innings.
Sox are a completely different team in Fenway. I think it goes to a game 5.

Yeah, you're probably right. Boston historically has always folded when they've been down two games before. They never come back to win series.

Of course not. It's part of their home-field advantage. But it's not an unfair advantage. Boston's shaped their roster to take advantage of Fenway for decades, there's no real difference here.

So a team shouldn't play effectively to the field they've chosen to play on? Yeah....you'd make a great GM.

Whichever, but I've certainly seen a significant number of Yankee home runs fly out in that direction.Oh, and I'm not a BoSox fan. :bye:
