***OFFICIAL*** Red Sox / Angels 2009 Playoff Thread (1 Viewer)

Papelbon pretty much sucked all yr. Pitched out of trouble all the time. Whats up with that?
He wasn't brutal, but he wasn't hise normal dominant self, mainly for two reasons:1) He gave up way more walks (3.18/9, as opposed to 1.04 and 2.31 in 2008 and 2007)

2) He reverted back into being a FB pitcher (26% GB).

The two big factors I see that have led to the higher BB rate are both related to his pitches outside of the zone: His O-swing% (percentage of pitches swung at outside of the strike zone) fell precipitously from 34.3% to 26.2% (league average = 25.1%). And, continuing a trend that he was able to mask a little better last year, his O-Contact% was 60.4% this year and 64.4% the year before. A lot of pitches that were swung-and-missed pre-08 are now being fouled off or put into play. Secondarily, he hasn't been in the zone as much, down to 51% from 54%. More balls, more pitches, more walks, more runs. His WHIP and ERA were kept in line by a stellar 90% strand rate (partially due, no doubt, to the fact that he always pitches from the stretch), way higher than the 71% league average.

I think a lot of those chases and whiffs were a result of his splitter, which he's thrown less and less: 19.7%, 15.7%, 12.6% and 9.3%, from 2006 to 2009. That's led to an over-reliance on the FB, discussed further here in the context of today's game: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/a...lbon-blows-save

Way to go Angels!
Yep, even if they lose to the Yankees, that was good enough for me. I went to the second game at the big A, and true to form, the obnoxiousness was everywhere. I was actually curious how they would be at a playoff game. Even worse. Saw one group jawing at another outside in the walkway. Boston guy goes to grab the smallest Angels guy by the neck. Cops had to come, you get the picture. They were getting kicked out left and right in the later innings. When the Angels took control, sour grapes were everywhere. Kinda funny, because the ushers were obviously biased and having none of it. So, you'd get wild applause every time someone got the boot. Granted, I was in right field, but still...All the ushers are old, white men, in these straw-type hats. Seemed like they actually liked it, which the fans dug.

Same experience last year at the ALCS. Worst group of fans on earth. Not even close.

 Sucks too because besides Papelbon they are a good group of guys and I really like their manager. That said, I'd root for Jon Gosselin before I rooted for the Red Sux.
