Game 1: Lackey vs. Beckett.

Lackey was 19-9 with a 3.01 ERA, 179 K/52 BB, 18 HR surrendered, 2 CGSO.

Beckett was 20-7 with a 3.27 ERA, 194 K/40 BB, 17 HR surrendered, 1 CG.

As expected, an incredibly even matchup. Or is it?

Against the Angels this year, Beckett is 1-0 with 11 H, 2 ER and 13 K/2 BB in 13 IP over 2 starts.

Against the Red Sox this year, Lackey is 0-2 with 20 H, 9 ER and 9 K/1 BB in 9 2/3 IP over 2 starts.

No Wakefield, no Tavarez...other then that, no real surprises

Does TBS not have the game Mic'ed or is it really quiet there? Even after the home run, I'd figure people would go bonkers but I can't totally blame the fans, might be the coverage.

Over/under 2 IP for Lackey... any takers?
Over.If you set it at 4 and change, I'd say under. I picked the angels in 4, but that pick looks wrong already.
Any reason why you would make such a prediction other than a hunch?
Escobar and Lackey primarily. I like K-Rod better than Papelbon too. Manny off the injury, jury's out on how he'll react. Very hunch driven though.I also did predict before I knew GMJ Jr. was out for the series.

Great game, beginning to end. Ellsbury looking sharp on defense, Papi with another big postseason home run, and Beckett looking like Cy. This is a very nice start to say the least.

TBS coverage is terrible. Sound or lack there of sucks out all of the excitement.

I will post my photos from the game tomorrow...awesome game, crowd was great. Lugo getting called out was some serious BS... Lackey got OWNED as usual at Fenway....pretty much a blueprint on how you should play a playoff game

Sox have won 7 in a row I believe in postseason against Angels...

Christy Mathewson is the only pitcher with four postseason shutouts; Beckett tied Whitey Ford and Mordecai Brown with three (per ESPN)

Beckett has only pitched 6 times in postseason....and has 3 CG Shutouts...

Ridic

That is just sick. Loved him fighting back the smile in the 9th on the mound. Wasn't a cocky smile.. was just the look of a kid who knew he was in COMPLETE control up there. I hope he retires in a Boston Uni....

From Gammons Insider Blog

On Monday, hitting coach Dave Magadan went through advance guru Dana Levangie's report and begged hitters to try to lay off Lackey's slider and curveball out of the strike zone. Not one Boston hitter swung at a pitch out of the strike zone from Lackey.

Kid was nails last night. Must be nice to have a dominant ace like that. Hopefully Hughes or Chamberlain can develop into one.

some stats from a post at SoSH:

I thought as early as the 4th inning that this was the best Beckett's looked all season. Not just because of his consistent veolcity, but because his breaking stuff had serious movement and he didn't leave ANYTHING up in the zone. As for the numbers:* His third postseason shutout at the age of 27.* Retired 19 straight hitters after the leadoff single to Figgins.* Five batters put the ball in play on the first pitch. Five more did so on the second pitch.* Of the remaining 21 hitters, Josh got ahead 0-2 on 9 of them.* Threw first-pitch balls to just 6 hitters. Only one, Maicer Izturis in the 2nd, had a 2-0 count.* Threw only 7 pitches in the 9th inning.* Figgins (1st) and Izturis (5th) where the only batters to see 3 balls in a plate appearance.* In all, he threw 83 strikes and only 25 balls.Just outstanding.

Tom Verducci:

To understand the difficulty of what Red Sox ace Josh Beckett did Wednesday night at Fenway Park, first you have to know that his was the 124th shutout in the 104 years of postseason play. Not bad. Beckett has three of those 124 shutouts himself; only the great Christy Mathewson, with four, ever threw more. Even better.

But what you really need to know is how many times in those 124 postseason shutouts that the pitcher allowed no walks and no extra-base hits while striking out as many as eight batters. I'll give you the entire list here:

1. Josh Beckett, Boston, 4-0, Game 1, ALDS over Los Angeles.

That's it.
Although that is obviously skewed by throwing in the 8K's  11 pitchers equaled that feat with fewer K's

ESPN threw some stats up on the screen that flat out blew me away so I figured I'd dig around and put some similiar ones up here:

DIvisional Series Playoff Stats:

2G - 16IP - 17K - 5BB - 0.56 ERA - 0.44 WHIP

Championship Series Playoff Stats:

3G - 19IP - 19K - 2BB - 3.26 ERA - 0.67 WHIP (indicating the ERA was inflated due to bad luck)

World Series Playoff Stats:

2G - 16.1 IP - 19K - 5BB - 1.10 ERA - 0.90 WHIP

Beckett's OVERALL MLB POSTSEASON STATS:

7G - 51IP - 55K - 12BB - 1.74 ERA - 0.72 WHIP

:wall:

I'm going to game 2 and am surprised that Matsuzaka is pitching game 2. I trust Francona, but it surprised me he chose him over Schilling.

I just think about a deciding game 5 (which obviously we hope doesn't get played)....who would rather have in that spot? For me, its Schilling.

Game three might be the most important game of this series. Who would you want to pitch for you on the road? What if you're up 2-0? 1-1? Down 0-2? I'd take Schilling on the road in all of those cases, although it's close. Matsuzaka looked pretty good in his last start but I'd be nervous about him on the road, especially since he's got a tendency to give up the big inning.

or those of you keeping score at home... and enjoy the beauty of the NFL salary cap...

Boston payroll - $143 MILLION

Washington Nationals $37M

yeah this sport is rather fair........ lordy.

Is there a better feeling in the world than that? That's the second hardest home run I've seen Manny hit out of Fenway. Great game. Bullpens at their best. Manny back, healthy, tested and delivering.

:excited:
