@EdBouchette: #Steelers announce Mike Tomlin contract extension thru 2016
Pittsburgh Steelers extend Mike Tomlin's contractBy Dan Hanzus

Writer

No franchise has more impeccable taste in choosing head coaches than the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the team has ensured its current leader won't go anywhere.

The Steelers announced Tuesday that Mike Tomlin's contract has been extended three years, through the 2016 season. Tomlin -- who had two years remaining on his previous deal -- now is tied to the team for five years.

"We are pleased to announce that Mike Tomlin will remain with the Steelers for at least five more years," Steelers president Art Rooney II said in a statement issued by the team. "Mike is one of the top head coaches in the National Football League and we are thrilled he will continue to lead our team as we pursue another Super Bowl title."

Tomlin replaced Bill Cowher in 2006, and the Steelers never missed a beat. Tomlin has a 60-28 lifetime record, including a Super Bowl XLIII title in 2009. He's the youngest head coach to both appear in, and win, a Super Bowl -- he was 36 at the time.

No franchise has handled the transition of change better than the Steelers. Chuck Noll won four Super Bowls over 22 seasons (1969-1991) before giving way to Cowher, who brought another title in his 15 seasons (1992-2006). Tomlin has maintained that sense of stability in the organization while keeping it a perennial title contender. An extension well deserved.

Beat me to it, Frenchy!Looks like the Steelers are geniuses. ;)
Right contract, wrong player. Well deserved Antonio Brown and good message sent from the steelers FO to a player who didn't report on time. This is probably the exact same offer they made to Wallace. What do you bet???

Wow, really surprised they gave AB that much money after a productive half season. Glad to have him on board for another 5 years though.Hey Mike, how ya feelin now?! :lmao:

Went to practice yesterday. Some quick observations: 99 had a brace on his knee and had it wrapped after practice. 95 didn't participate  7 looked sharp and was awesome to the fans after practice. 84 was catching everything, 11 was the opposite. 30 was constantly in the right place. 23 was out there with the starters quite a bit. 20 looked sharp. 3 and 22 are really fast. 25 (21 in practice I think) looks good, great to the fans after practice...chiseled. 9 was booming kicks. 33 looked to be slimmed down a little. 45 is really tall. 98 and 92 not out there. 96 and 97 showing a lot of hustle.

Its cool that youre an FBG, Coach Tomlin, but next time give names not numbers :loco: My link

Yeah, it's one thing to throw out 7, 84 and 99. It's another to throw out 30, 11, 3, 22 and 9.

Radio guys saying it's all Wallace, that the agent has tried to get it done but Wallace won't listen. They also believe this spells the end for him in Pittsburgh.

Thought wallace was a pretty down to earth guy. all i can figure is he is hell bent on testing the market and didn't want to settle for close. gonna have to be a big payday to make up for losing over 7 mil this season. good luck mike!

A few notes from camp yesterday. Sean Spence didn't do anything. They held him out apparently as a precaution. DeCastro was in there with the starters some in the 11 on 11s but I didn't catch his work, too busy watching others I guess. They ran the ball almost every play in the 11 on 11s. First play of 11 on 11s Colon and Timmons get in a scuffle. Really going at it. Before that, Ryan Clark was doing some serious jawing and went after someone on O. Ike Taylor had to hold him back. As he was walking away I heard him say something about money and stupid, so guess he was going after Brown. Barron Batch was still impressive today, very shifty running the ball but a little tentative in the individual blocking drills. Not impressed with John Clay. In individual drills Ike Taylor was looking really good except... They've got this kid from a small school in VA (woo!) named Tyler Beiler (wr). He beat Ryan Clark first, then he beat Ike Taylor. He catches everything. Could be the underdog that gets a shot. I like him more than Tony Clemons, but Clemons did have a (slightly) better day than he did Friday. Liking Derrick Williams as well. Mike Adams had an on and off day in the 1 on 1 drills versus dlinemen. He did show great footwork several times though. Think he'll be just fine. Lewis was still in at the other cb spot. Cortez Allen looked pretty good as well. Not really impressed with Curtis Brown. Marquis Maze is really fast and has good hands. Chris Rainey wore thigh pads, a complete uniform while everyone else wore shorts. He's ready for some football.

Couple other notes now that I'm home. I read somewhere (steelersdepot.com I think) that Ta'amu was held out again yesterday. I know damn well I saw a 95 out there, as did those I went with. And he looked good. In the 11 on 11 he occupied 2 blockers and was still getting a good push. He moves well for a big man. Also big is McClendon....very big. They have him listed at 280 but there is no damn way. Casey Hampton says he'll be back in time for the opener. If so, the NT spot is solid. Think I said Friday was a good day for Heyward and Hood. Saturday was a repeat. Chris Carter is in at Harrison's spot and I think he is looking really good. Colon is playing with a serious mean streak. The "arm" they brought in at qb, Jerrod Johnson, looks the part but is horribly inaccurate. Charlie Batch still hits the throws well but his passes lack zip (nothing new there I guess). Crazy watching his throws versus someone like Leftwich. Leftwich hit Clemons in the chest Friday (drop) that produced a loud thud throughout the stadium. Saunders (TE) can really motor. Johnson (TE but now FB) can't catch a cold. They signed Brandon Johnson (Cin) in June and he's backing up Woodley right now. Lets hope Worilds gets back soon. Johnson looked the part in drills but I didn't see anything out of him in "live" action.

Thanks guys. Figured I'd share what I could. It's like information overload trying to keep up/watch everything going on out there.

Now that I'm not there I'm dying for more camp reports. Haven't found much. Guess Wexell has his on scout.com but it's a subscription site. Bouchette is out there but he seems to be more about "stories" than what is happening in camp. He was on the sideline BSing with someone with his back to the field whenever I saw him.

Holdout Wallace should wise up, get to camp, stop messing with Steelers

History suggests the Steelers will eventually reward Mike Wallace if he signs and reports.

By Jason La Canfora | NFL Insider

July 29, 2012 7:44 PM ET

LATROBE, Penn. -- I wrote this before, about six weeks ago to be precise, and I'll write it again, and if logic reigns it will soon become a moot point: Mike Wallace, you need to get back with your teammates. Your holdout is going nowhere. It's well beyond time to get back to Pennsylvania and get back to work.

There isn't really any other choice. This ill-fated holdout is getting Wallace nowhere and the only rational end result -- signing a long-team deal with the Steelers -- has not changed. As the Steelers forged on Sunday at training camp, no one was pining for Mike Wallace. Instead, the business of preparing for a championship season resumed, something this franchise does quite well.

You can't bully the Steelers. The Rooney family won't blink, and they continue to abide by their tried and true tactics in these situations, in this case, no negotiations with Wallace until he gets his butt to Western Pennsylvania. No one is bigger than this team, especially not a highly talented, yet limited receiver who happens to be playing a position where the team enjoys great depth, at a time a new offense is being installed, and with fellow receiver Antonio Brown just receiving a five-year, $42 million extension.

Coach Mike Tomlin, generally unfazed in the face of anything, is not deterred by Wallace's absence. And he's up front with his team about the mentality to adopt.

"We identify all of these situations as unique ones, and each one stands on its own, and it's part of the process," Tomlin said. "Whether it's through a contractual situation or injuries or suspensions or what have you, one man's misfortune is another man's opportunity. We talk about that openly all the time. We acknowledge in this journey we're on, things are going to happen, and others need to seize these opportunities to show what they're capable of. And I think a lot of men here are capable of that."

One player told me that, unequivocally, "We're not the same team without Mike," noting how effective he is by changing defenses as a deep threat whether the ball comes his way or now. They know it's a business, but feel like Wallace is hurting not only himself, but the team, and they wonder about how fit and durable he will be if he has a long layoff.

Now is not the time to be like Mike. It's beyond time that Wallace started to be like Antonio.

Wallace had very little leverage back when he skipped minicamp, and the tide has only swung even more in the Pittsburgh Steelers' favor since then. So, let's get a few things straight right off the bat.

A trade is not the solution here. It would be tricky enough for the Steelers to get fair compensation in the first place, and for Wallace to find a team to meet his demands in the second. But the time for him to determine his market already came and went, when he received no offer sheet as a restricted free agent, and the Steelers ownership and management is not entertaining the idea of dealing the speedy young wideout.

This isn't lip service. This is how the Rooneys roll.

"Mike Wallace is not available for trade," general manager Kevin Colbert told me before practice Sunday, overlooking the bucolic scenery of St. Vincent's College. "We're not even thinking in those terms."

Also, disregard what you might hear about the Brown signing being reactionary to Wallace's holdout. This, too, is another facet of The Rooney Way when it comes to operating their team. Traditionally, they open up talks with top players as camp opens the year they enter the final year of their rookie contracts. Wallace or no Wallace, the Steelers were very much interested in securing Brown and fellow receiver Emanuel Sanders deep into the future, and that never changed.

Sure, the timing is fortuitous, but the Steelers had told Brown long ago they would make an effort to secure his services before the start of the season, and that they did.

You will read plenty about the Steelers and Wallace having a frayed relationship, one that's beyond repair. Again, reader beware. The Steelers wanted Wallace long-term at the start of the offseason, and that has not wavered. It just has to be at the right price point. And money tends to be the great salve for bruised feelings when it comes to the business of football. Far more acrimonious situations have been patched up. The Steelers still want him.

"We haven't changed in that regard at all," Colbert said. "Mike is a great player and we'd love for him to be a Steeler for a long time."

Some will suggest that Pittsburgh's cap crunch will make signing Wallace to a big contract prohibitive. Nope. Not true. Where there is a will, there's a way. "There are always ways to create room if you decide to do it."

There is a budget in place to sign Wallace. And, again, as I advised in this space oh those many weeks ago, Wallace needs to try to get as close as he can to a five-year, $50 million deal -- with $25 million guaranteed -- and call it a day. Wisely, sources said Wallace came off his desire to be paid like a Larry Fitzgerald a few weeks ago, when things were progressing, and trying to get a deal around $11 million a year like Vincent Jackson got from Tampa is the new goal.

But Jackson wasn't just a third-year player when he got paid, and he was an unrestricted free agent and he had already played a partial season vastly underpaid due to the uncapped-season rules and another as a franchise player. Wallace has none of that on his résumé, and the Steelers still could franchise him for two more years. And if he were to sit out an entire season, they would still own his rights and he would be right back where he started.

This isn't like Maurice Jones-Drew making a stand with the Jags, or a franchise player like Dwayne Bowe staying away with his tender unsigned. Wallace is only hurting himself at this point, and the Rooneys have forbidden any negotiations to take place until Wallace shows up. Another long-standing policy. It ain't changing, either.

"Mike understands that for any steps to be taken," Colbert said, "he has to come here and report to camp and sign his tender and then we'll see where it goes."

Where it goes, is where it has always been heading -- a long-term deal around the parameters I put forth. Any staying away is only preventing that payday, and putting Wallace's future on hold.

Camp Rumblings: The Steelers feel optimistic that their offensive line is really ready to take a turn for the better. Willie Colon, a former starting tackle moving to left guard, earned praise from Colbert and offensive coordinator Todd Haley, and they feel like Max Starks will help their tackle depth when he eventually gets off the PUP list.

• The team is in no rush to get Casey Hampton or James Harrison off the PUP list, allowing both stalwart vets plenty of rest and rehab time.

• Running back Jonathan Dwyer is in the best shape the coaches have ever seen him, and the big back could figure pretty heavily into the rotation with Rashard Mendenhall likely out until December.

• Haley, taking over for longtime coordinator Bruce Arians, who had a very close relationship with Ben Roethlisberger, said he has to play golf with Big Ben -- they share that passion -- and is gradually getting to know him better. Their chemistry will be a big element to this season, and Haley is much more fiery and demonstrative than what Roethlisberger is used to.

"You can't force that relationship," Haley said. "What I've always told my quarterbacks is, I go by what I see, not what I hear," Haley said. "And I'd expect them to do the same thing."

Steelers Practice Report (7-29)

By Jim Wexell

SteelCityInsider.net

Posted Jul 29, 2012

LATROBE – The message that was sent once again here on the second day of full-contact Steelers football is a message that 236-pound running back Jonathan Dwyer said was sent last April.

It's a message that the Steelers will play physical offensive football this year.

"They sent that message when they drafted top-notch offensive linemen in the first two rounds," Dwyer said. "We've got a great bunch of linemen who love to be physical and guys who love to run the ball and be tough guys."

Dwyer was that "tough guy" Sunday. When Isaac Redman was smacked in the head and left the field after the first play of team scrimmage, Dwyer replaced him and the offensive didn't miss a beat.

On the first snap of the second scrimmage, Dwyer ran wide behind his fullback and cut up, then cut back outside for a sizable gain.

On the first snap of the third and final team scrimmage, Dwyer ran up the middle for close to 10 yards as he kept his pads low and his legs churning.

If the message from coach Mike Tomlin is that the Steelers are going to establish a physical mindset on offense, Dwyer is happy to be the errand boy.

"It suits me and Redman's style," Dwyer said. "(John) Clay is the same type of back, too. It's a great situation for us to be a smashmouth football team."

CORNERBACK INJURED

With physical football comes injuries, and cornerback Keenan Lewis sprained the AC joint in his shoulder on the sweep by Dwyer.

Also, linemen Trai Essex and David DeCastro rolled their ankles and missed bits of practice.

Redman returned for the seven-on-seven drill and even took a snap in the final team scrimmage.

Wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders was rested because the entire practice was held on the field turf.

"Just want to preserve him," said Tomlin.

Heath Miller (ankle) and Jeremy Kapinos (back) again missed practice.

The players will have Monday off, so Tomlin expects many of the injured players to return.

LINEBACKERS V. TIGHT ENDS

The feature competition in Sunday's practice was sealing the edge with tight ends against linebackers. And to spice things up, Tomlin called over to the running backs coach and loudly asked to borrow fullback David Johnson.

"Look, Wood," Tomlin shouted to LaMarr Woodley, "Here comes D.J!" Woodley didn't go up against Johnson until midway through the drill, but he was obviously inspired.

On the first snap, Johnson fired low, but Woodley snapped him to the ground and easily got to the running back. The second snap, Woodley just threw Johnson as if he were a ragdoll. The third snap was also a decisive win for Woodley, who was clearly the star of this show.

Undrafted linebacker Adrian Robinson had some bright moments at the expense of 6-foot-8 tight end Leonard Pope, who also struggled against Brandon Hicks.

Brandon Johnson also struggled. The skinny 6-6 outside linebacker from the Cincinnati Bengals was whipped by Weslye Saunders.

THIN RECEIVING CORPS

With Mike Wallace still holding out, and Sanders being rested, Sunday was a chance for the reserve wide receivers to make a run at a couple of wide-open roster spots. Some of the great catches should be noted:

* David Gilreath, the fleet-footed former Wisconsin Badger, went way up to haul in a Charlie Batch pass during live scrimmage.

* During 7-on-7s, Toney Clemons went up to make a fingertip catch that drew gasps from the other end of the field.

* The catch of the day, though, was made by Jimmy Young. The former TCU star ended practice with a diving catch of a deep pass from Byron Leftwich after breaking free from the icy grip of Ike Taylor.

COLON: IT'S JUST FOOTALL

Willie Colon was asked why he opened Saturday's team scrimmage with what appeared to be a premeditated blast and then fight with linebacker Lawrence Timmons.

"Just how it goes sometimes at camp," Colon said. "I got a little hot-headed. I still love him. He loves me. Move on."

One teammate theorized it was two years of injury frustration for Colon that erupted on the first snap of the 2012 season.

"A little bit. A little bit," Colon said. "But I've never been one to puff my chest and scream how bad I am. I have a temperament but I play by it and try to play smart and not hurt my teammates in the process. It's practice. Who knows what it was. It's over."

Colon lightened up and had a hearty laugh when asked about the screen play in which his pants fell down causing him to fall on his face in the open field. "Yeah, Ben (Roethlisberger) made fun of me," Colon said. "I don't know what happened

He didn't throw too much when I was there, but he looked really good when he did throw. They did throw a ton of swings and screens to backs out of the backfield by the way. Looking like (not that camp gives much away) a lot more timing and short yardage stuff versus the big play/waiting for things to develop. We'll see...Heard an interview with Keith Butler today. He didn't sound too optimistic about Harrison. I'm gong to go with coach speak. Every indication I've gotten from Harrison (twitter/FB) is he'll be ready. Swan song as far as I'm concerned though. His back is toast. (personal opinion based on nothing more than reading what he's done to get out there)

Ben either tore it in november or discovered it then. I think its a pain tolerance thing. Not sure if a partial tear is.more or less susceptible to tearing all the way.

http://www.steelersdepot.com/2012/08/2012-pittsburgh-steelers-training-camp-wednesday-day-eight-recap/

The Pittsburgh Steelers have now wrapped up day eight of training camp with another padded practice on Wednesday and below is your recap of all the media reports today from Twitter.

Trimmed down former Steelers Jeff Hartings and Chris Hoke are in camp helping out as intern assistants as reported by Alan Robinson on

The big news early in the day was Ben Roethlisberger telling the Post Gazette that he expects Mike Wallace any time now. Roethlisberger also told Ed Bouchette that he has a slight tear of the rotator cuff in his throwing arm, but that he is not overly concerned about it. When asked after practice about it, head coach Mike Tomlin said he has no concerns about it. Roethlisberger did say that he will no longer throw during walk-through practices to save wear and tear on the arm.

As expected, safety Damon Cromartie-Smith was removed from the PUP list on Wednesday and has started practicing. Linebackers coach Keith Butler told David Todd today that he hopes to have both James Harrison and Jason Worilds back in a couple of weeks, but that is not a definite. Cornerback Terry Carter (hamstring) was not back at practice today and the only new injury to report on Wednesday was to running back John Clay (groin), who suffered a right groin injury. Fellow running back Chris Rainey also had a heat related problem today. Neither is expected to be serious in nature. Maurkice Pouncey also left practice briefly after dinging his ankle, but was able to return. LaMarr Woodley was given the day off to stay ahead of the curve according to Tomlin.

Rashard Mendenhall said on Wednesday that he is coming along well with his ACL recovery. He said that he is right on schedule and is getting his right knee slowly back to normal.

The Wednesday session started with some special teams work as several players were fielding directional kicks. Baron Batch, Derrick Williams, Jonathan Dwyer, David Gilreath, Marquis Maze and Rainey were reportedly among those players returning punts in the drill. Rainey also blocked a field goal attempt of backup-kicker Danny Hrapmann as he came off the edge. The special team unit worked on a lot of situational things like squib kicks and onside type things today according to several reports.

The defense worked some on having the linebackers cover running backs and tight ends today. With Woodley off today, Stevenson Sylvester received work as the first team left outside linebacker opposite Chris Carter. Sean Spence tried to run with Rainey, but Rainey still was able to get separation reportedly. That is a tough chore for anyone, let alone Spence. Lawrence Timmons popped Batch pretty good on a play and Batch reportedly took the hit well. That is a good sign as he is right at year now since he tore his ACL.

Offensive line coach Sean Kugler was overheard giving David DeCastro and Mike Adams a pretty good chewing today. It's training camp and that is to be expected. We will wait to pass judgement on both until the first prseason game is in the books. Cameron Heyward reportedly had his way with Kelvin Beachum again today. Al Woods also reportedly had a good day once again, especially against DeCastro. Outside linebacker Adrian Robinson used a good spin move on Adams as he faked a speed rush. Robinson might not make the 53 man roster, but he figures to at least make the practice squad.

At receiver, Gilreath worked on the second team along with Jerricho Cotchery and Derrick Williams. Antonio Brown and Cotchery continue to have solid camps. Remember, last year Cotchery was signed late and started off with a hamstring injury. He figures to play a much bigger role in his second year with the team as either the third or fourth receiver.

Watching this interview with Ben, sounds like his typical drama that comes out much worse than it really is:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2KQnake1bro&sns=em
Totally.Beat writers who were at practice were all over this on Twitter. Guy from the Trib(Kaboly) flat out asked Tomlin "Has Ben been limited in any way in practices?" Tomlin's immediate and emphatic response was "None."Same beat writer reported that "For a guy with a partial rotator cuff tear, he was sure throwing a ton of reps AFTER practice."Sounds like Ben still loves him some microphones.

From today local papers -

Asked if he has any concerns about his quarterback’s shoulder, Tomlin said, “None.”

“I thought it was a non-issue because it happened so long ago,” Roethlisberger said.

The injury occurred when Roethlisberger’s shoulder became extended on a play during the 23-20 loss to Baltimore on Nov. 6. He missed only one game the rest of the season, Dec. 24 against the Rams because of a sore ankle.

A lower-grade rotator cuff tear usually does not require surgery, only rehabilitation. An injury common to athletes, it is more like inflammation, and the shoulder often returns to normal function without surgery.

“We worked really hard, getting it right to play, and I never missed any time. Doc (Dr. Jim) Bradley and (Steelers athletic trainer) John Norwig and the trainers spent so much time rehabbing it and getting it right,” Roethlisberger said.

The injury had no appreciable effect on his performance, at least statistically. He completed 63 percent of his 192 passes after the injury and 63 percent of his 321 passes before it.

“There was no injection, no surgery, nothing but simple rehab,” Roethlisberger said. “It was never an issue, and I’ve dealt with a lot of pain. That wasn’t going to take me out. … I didn’t see any dropoff in my play.”

I'd heard Ike say before that Cortez Allen would be better than he is. Lolley blog says: "Coming out of the Citadel, Allen was supposed to be a project. At this point, the former fourth-round draft pick looks like the second coming of Ike Taylor - with hands."

Probably why Lewis didn't sit out this week with his shoulder tear.

And this was kind of funny (and echoes what I felt about him when I was there). "Cam Heyward looks like a beast in those drills. He jacked up Trai Essex so hard on a bull rush that it's possible Essex' ancestors felt it."

Not sure if he can unseat Lewis as starter but I really like Cortez Allen. Good news about Heyward but I think Betty White could jack up Trai Essex. Looking forward to seeing how he does in the preseason.

Lewis definitely has the upper hand. Probably only a matter of time. Essex as the "starting" left tackle doesn't sound all that appetizing. Scrimmage tonight. Wish I could go but it's a bit of a drive and 3 trips within about a month... First preseason is only a few more days. :towelwave:

Joey Porter, Aaron Smith, Marvel Smith, Willie Parker to retire as Steelers 2nite at team's night practice at Latrobe Stadium.
One of these things is not like the others. One of these things just doesn't belong.
Honestly couldnt tell you if youre referring to Marvel or FWP..Both at their peak were pro bowlers
Not sure either. FWP undrafted? A Smith white? Porter has a big mouth?

Thought the same thing. No clue what he meant.

"With left guard Willie Colon (ankle) sitting out, the No. 1 offensive line most of the day was rookie Mike Adams at left tackle, Ramon Foster at left guard, Maurkice Pouncey at center, rookie David DeCastro at right guard and Marcus Gilbert at right tackle. Adams has moved ahead of Trai Essex, although Max Starks (knee) could push for the starting job once he is healthy."

crisis averted. :)

One thing I've heard is Foster is not giving up the RG spot easily to DeCastro. Playing really well. Not only does the line look better (on paper) but the depth with Legursky, Starks/Adams and Decastro/Foster looks nice as well.

Guess we'll get our first look this week at not only how the team is shaping up but the replacement refs as well. Could be kind of ugly (if the real refs don't get back in time for the season).
