***OFFICIAL*** Steelers 2012 Thread (1 Viewer)

So what is this offense going to be like? I know Haley likes to run the ball, but the tools are much better in the passing game. I really want to like Big Ben this year. Will he get over 550 passes? Also, there was talk about Heath Miller being more involved in the passing game. So far that has not been the case. Should I expect this to change or will he be held in to block to combat the o-line problems?
this is a difficult question. on one hand, the ownership spoke out that we need to run the ball more. this is way out of character for the Rooney's so you know it got Tomlin's attention. however, the strength of this offense is the speed with wallace, brown, sanders and now rainey. if ben survives the pass rush, they should be good for a lot of big plays. so the way i look at it is that they will try to run the ball more than last year but the passing game will still be viable just because there are so many weapons there. heath is at best a spot starter in the fantasy world as he is usually an afterthought in the passing game despite his incredibly good hands and ball skills. imo antonio brown is the player to own considering his ADP. the feel around town is that he is going to be a monster this year and this preseason hasn't dampened that spirit.

I saw bits and pieces of the game, including Rainey's 2 called back punt return TDs, but mostly missed it. Saw Dwyer have a few nice carries, ended up with 13/63. IMO he is our RB that should get the most carries week 1 all things considered.

Didnt see it, but heard Spence's injury was nasty. Injuries have killed us this preaseason. I honestly dont know who out next ILB would be behind Foote with Spence, Sylvester, and Ivy all out..Mcfadden?! Where is Keyaron Fox when you need him.

Depth at linebacker is really a concern. The Steelers may be looking at the WW tonight.
Another reason the Mendenhall activation puzzles me. Only reasonable explanation is lack of faith in Redman and Dwyer, their need at LB is greater than their need at RB.

If (when) Spence is put on IR, doesn't that open a roster spot just the same?
My bad, twitter post only said knee injury, just saw torn ACL plus. Nevermind.

####!!!!God damn injuries.

Sean Spence is believed to have torn ACL, LCL, dislocated kneecap
Jesus, man.
These things usually happen in threes, so who will be next to dislocate their knee cap?? DeCastro, Spence...
I hope it is Dan Sepulveda

Late this afternoon, the Steelers announced the moves they made to reach the mandatory NFL roster limit of 53 and they cut quarterback Jerrod Johnson and kept Batch.Among other moves, they waived injured veteran offensive tackle Trai Essex along with punter Jeremy Kapinos, who had been with them the past two seasons but who had back surgery in August.Rookie linebacker Sean Spence was placed on injured reserve.Others released were safety Damon Cromartie-Smith, cornerbacks Terrence Frederick and Josh Victorian, linebackers Brandon Hicks and Marshall McFadden, defensive lineman Corbin Bryant, Ikponmwosa Igbinosun and Jake Stoller, running back DuJuan Harris, wide receivers Derrick Williams, Marquis Maze, Tyler Beiler, David Gilreath and Toney Clemons and offensive linemen Ryan Lee and John Malecki.
Was hoping they kept Victorian, otherwise nothing to complain about although not keeping Gilreath is a little surprising to me. Also surprised Beachum made the cut over Lee.Definitely right decision to keep the rookie punter Butler IMO. Missed most of last nights game, but he was booming them every other week. Also very glad Golden and Robinson made the team. Im surprised they kept 4 TE's, but Im guessing that relates directly to Saunders starting the season with a suspension.

A little surprised (but not heartbroken) to see Essex cut given DeCastro's injury.
I dont see why they kept Beachum over Essex. As much as I hate Essex, he could play any position on the OL for the most part. Beachum looks like a bum. Also wish they cut Will Allen. I dont see what he brings to the team really, and he has no potential. I wouldve rather kept Victorian or Gilreath.

They like Beachum, but he has not played well. Essex does provide versatility but so does Foster and Legursky. They still have some players they could shuffle around if needed. Allen might be a situation of having someone with experience for week 1 since Clark will be out.I'm sure some of the cuts like Gilreath are headed to the PS as long as they clear waivers.

Also keep in mind that DeCastro had to be on the 53 and will go to the 8 week IR next week. Then they will sign someone else. Maybe Essex.

do they get relief (another body) while Saunders is suspended?

Branch, Gilyard, and McNutt are all WRs I wouldnt mind picking up.Koppen must be pretty hurt for NE to cut him, no?!
Don't really need a WR. Haley never uses 4 that I know of. And I would think they'll sign someone (Gilreath) to the PS. More worried about ILB myself.

Sylvester is coming back in a couple-three weeks?
Yeah, but who else is there? OLB: Harrison, Woodley, Carter, Worilds, Robinson, Johnson. That leaves 3 ILB with one of them hurt.
Id be calling the Rams about Rocky McIntosh. Who played next to Fletcher in the skins 3-4, until he signed with the Rams and is currently relegated to back up status in their 4-3.He is on a 1 year 700k contract.

Interesting. I really liked him when he was in WASH. I would actually think he could start over Foote once in the system for a little.I also saw that NYG cut Greg Jones today. Always really liked him at MSU and in the NFL I think the 3-4 might be a better fit for him as well.

McFadden (lb) Cromartie-Smith and Ryan Lee to the PS. Not putting DeCastro on the 8 week IR for now.

The Steelers have agreed to terms with eight players for their practice squad, the team announced today.

The eight players include offensive linemen John Malecki and Ryan Lee, wide receivers David Gilreath and Toney Clemons, tight end Jamie McCoy, linebacker Marshall McFadden, safety Damon Cromartie-Smith and cornerback Josh Victorian.

ooh, good call on macintosh.

i guess we kept 4 WRs with the idea that Rainey fills the role of the 5th?

honestly, i don't know whether to be excited and optimistic about this team or, more rationally, see the writing on the wall that this is probably not a super-bowl caliber squad. reality sucks sometimes. i'll say 9-7 and no playoffs. too many tallies in the negative column especially to start the year.

I think that too given the rash of injuries but thinking more realistically, the DeCastro injury is the biggest hit. They were counting on him to learn and grow in this offense right away. Spence was only a backup linebacker and special teamer. Their special teams might take a hit but it may not matter if Rainey keeps returning punts for touchdowns. The thing that sucks is now 2 of their top 3 picks will see little action this season with the only one available having the most question marks (Adams). If I were him I'd watch out for Gilbert. He's been involved in 2 of the 3 major knee injuries for the Steelers.

WTF is up with the turf at Heinz? Watching a replay and huge chunks have come up twice when a players knee digs into the ground. Rain recently?

It's usually an issue after it's been beaten up by HS and Pitt games for a few weeks. It should have been in pretty much pristine shape Thursday.

my guess, fresh sod that didn't have time to take all the way yet....

In a welcome piece of good news, Mendenhall(!), Harrison and Worilds all practiced today.
Tomlin said the only players on the 53 ruled out for Sunday night are David DeCastro and Stephenson Sylvester. Decisions on Mendenhall, Harrison, Worilds and Isaac Redman will have to wait to see how thee injuries react to the workload this week in practice.ETA: Should have mentioned that Ryan Clark is also out for this week because of the altitude.

The Steelers have reportedly made no progress in long-term contract negotiations with Mike Wallace. The Steelers have a policy of cutting off negotiations once the season begins. There's not expected to be a final-hour breakthrough between the organization and the impending free agent. Previous reports had the Steelers offering $10 million per over five years while Wallace was holding out for $11 million annually.
geez couldn't they just split the difference?

Crap - I always forget about that.Who we stuck with now ....Mundy again?

Harrison did not practice today. Said it will be game time decision. I would think no practice means no game. :( Hopefully Worilds is ready. I know he practiced fully yesterday.

It's probably a guaranteed money issue, though if they're this close, one would hope it could get done.

At this point I think the Steelers are wise to hold off signing Wallace. Let's see how the season plays out -- if Wallace does great then franchise him.

Got the Steelers D in my auction for $3 which I thought was a pretty damn good deal.

Curious as to what Steeler homers think about the D this week vs Denver with Clark out. How is Harrison's knee doing? And how you guys see the RB situation playing out in week 1 with Mendenhall likely out and Redman still not 100%.

ETA- Just saw Harrison is OUT for Sunday night.

Some are saying he's out but he says it GTD. Might as well consider him out though.

Steelers OLB James Harrison (knee) will not play on Sunday Night Football against the Broncos.Harrison suffered a midweek setback and will be inactive for the rematch of January's playoff loss. The Steelers figure to look to Chris Carter and Jason Worilds opposite LaMarr Woodley. Harrison has indicated that he's not experiencing a ton of pain or discomfort, but clearly his recovery from offseason knee surgery has not gone smoothly.

Gimme Chris Carter over Worilds
As my enthusiasm in pre-season showed, I was/am really happy with how Carter has performed this year, but Worilds is bigger and stronger, and possibly faster. He showed some flashes last year and I think most everyone was looking forward to how he would show this year.
