Lot of great games this week, including NYJ-NE, Chi-GB, Den-ATL, Minn-TB, SD-Pitt, Tenn-Jax, and Dallas-Washington, but for my money the game of the week is Baltimore at New York.
I am a Ravens fan, so I am used to seeing other teams try to run on the Ravens, only to learn that it’s impossible. The Ravens are #1 in rush defense, allowing only 65 yards per game and a puny 2.9 yards per carry.
But if anyone can run on the Ravens, it’s the Giants. They’re #1 in rushing with 169 yards per game, and a sick 5.2 ypc. They’re also #1 in scoring, while the Ravens are #5 in points allowed. The Giants are #3 in the NFL with 12 rushing TDs, while the Ravens are #1, having given up just one all season. Watching the Giants line up and try to run right over the Ravens is going to be awesome to watch.
Meanwhile, the Ravens’ offense is coming around. They’re the #3 rushing team, and are # 1 in time of possession. The Giants are #2 in TOP. The real question for the Ravens is whether or not the O Line can hold up vs. the NY pass rush to give Flacco enough time to throw.
Looking at common opponents reveals the teams to be surprisingly close. The Giants lost 35-14 at Cleveland, while the Ravens won 37-27 there and 28-10 at home vs. the Browns. But the Giants won 21-14 @ Pitt, where the Ravens lost 23-20. And the Giants beat Cincy 26-23 at home, while the Ravens beat them 17-10 at home.
Historically, the Ravens match up very well vs. run first teams, simply because nobody has been able to run on them. But I can’t remember the last time I saw a team run the ball like the Giants.
