***Official Texans Offseason thread*** (1 Viewer)

I see us at around 7-9, but 9-7 is possible if we catch some breaks...

1-3 SEPT, 2-2 OCT, 2-1 NOV, 2-3 DEC

It really would've been awesome if we got Carolina at home and Carr had to play QB that day....

Andre Davis is now a part of the mess of WRs not named Andre Johnson

http://www.houstontexans.com/news/Story.asp?story_id=3292

HOUSTON - The Houston Texans have signed WR Andre’ Davis, it was announced today.

Davis (6-1, 195) has played in 64 games with 24 starts in his five-year career, and has caught 104 passes for 1,615 yards and 14 touchdowns. Noted for his elite speed, Davis tied the NFL record for the longest reception with a 99-yard touchdown on October 17, 2004 against Cincinnati when he played for the Cleveland Browns.

Davis, a native of Niskayuna, New York, was a second round pick (47th overall) by the Cleveland Browns in 2002. He spent the first three years of his career with the Browns before playing for New England in 2005 and Buffalo last season.

Davis was a three-year starter at Virginia Tech, where his 18 touchdowns were second-most in school history and his 103 receptions and 1,986 yards rank third. Davis also anchored the Hokies’ 4x100 meter relay team.

Davis is the seventh unrestricted free agent to sign with the Texans, joining LB Shawn Barber, OT Jordan Black, LB Danny Clark, RB Ahman Green, CB Jamar Fletcher and DT Jeff Zgonina.

rumor about the Texans trading the number 10 overall

http://www.eastcoastsportsnews.com/2007draft.html

04/17...(12:30 pm)...Rumors are swirling throughout the league that the 10th pick in the Draft owned by the Houston Texans is available via trade...the Texans are fielding offers for the pick which could be acquired before Draft day for the right price...stay tuned!
I hope it's so. I'd love to see us get a 2nd rounder back. I'd be fine with us trading back twice even, picking up 2 extra 2nds and then getting a cheaper player at the end of the round. Once we have a solid corp group we can start worrying about getting super stars with our first rounders.

more rumors from that same source

04/18...(5:30)...Trade rumors continue to circulate throughout the league as the sand in the hour-glass continues to dwindle leading up to the Draft...just yesterday I mentioned that the Texans were interested in moving down in the Draft and one day later the Denver Broncos have entered the trade rumor circle today as a team that is interested in moving up in the Draft...back in my 03/19 column I mentioned that the Broncos were interested in trading up and had contacted the Lions about the availability of the second pick in the Draft...the Broncos have been unsuccessful in their attempt to land a pass-rushing DE this off season but have an extra third round pick (#70) that they could package with their own third rounder (#86) which according to the NFL trade chart would put them in the range to move up to the Texans pick at #10...there's a good chance that both DE's Jamall Anderson and Adam Carricker will both still be on the board at the Texans pick...and...both teams are very familiar with each other since Texans Coach Gary Kubiak and GM Rick Smith both worked together at Denver with Mike Shanahan.

I would imagine the Al Wilson being gonzo from Denver means that the target could/would be Willis.

Spencer update from a blog of Lance Z.

Off topic a little, regarding Charles Spencer: I'm not going to ask if you've heard anything about his current status cause I know the Texans aren't going to give out any information at this point. But when, realistically, is the first point at which we can expect to see him if he's on track to come back and play this year? Training camp? I would imagine mini-camp is still too early.

You can realistically expect to see him by week 8 (that is the worst case scenario). There is a pretty good chance he could be ready to go by no later than week 1 and there is a little smaller chance that he would be ready by the beginning of camp.

Don't like it--what's our strategy, draft enough project defensive linemen and eventually one will pan out? What happened to the rumored trade down with Denver? We've drafted Babin, Travis Johnson, Mario, and now Okoye in the 1st round. We've also got Weaver signed to a pretty good deal, and still paying for Gary Walker, Robaire Smith, and Seth Payne. I am sick of defensive linemen and this team in general.....

God our franchise sucks....

Akoye- Gives the Texans something that they have not had one the roster, a quick penetrating DLmen. Williams is a power guy so now you have two different type of players with youth along the DL. In fact, Babin and Travis Johnson are still young, but have not proven their worth during the time with the TExans.

Jacoby Jones- I would like this pick more if I trusted the organization. Jones has pure athletic talent, but played against a low level of competition. Pretty high risk, high reward player, but one who may need some time to develop more. If he is ready, then kudos to Kubiak and Rick Smith.

Until I see what we do in the draft and how Schuab looks, I'm thinking 8-8 is a realistic expectation this year.
Although I like the Okoye pick (IF he pans out, big bust risk in my eyes), I'm going to have to temper expectations to 6-10 this year. The rumored trade down with Denver would have been nice, as we could have gotten either a safety or Alan Branch and we would have had an extra 2nd to work with. As it stands with no #2 corner and no safety worth a pro-roster, our secondary is going to be paper thin again this year. At least the offense should be much improved from last year.Who knows on Jones? WR was a need, but I know little about the guy. Can he be all that much better an option than Anderson, Walter or Mathis? I understand the Texans brass got a good look at him during the Shrine game at Reliant this year, so maybe they saw something they really liked (plus Bloom likes him!)

We just traded our 4th to NO, anyone have the details on what the trade was?

Edit: Thanks coolnerd!

I like Okoye at 1.10 alot more than the other 3 DL metioned in regards to their draft positions. Babin and Travis Johnson were both reaches. Said thing is, I remember us trading up to draft them! The book is still out on Mario, but chaces are he was the wrong pick when Young and Bush were on the board. Maybe we can generate pressure on the QB this season which will make any secondary look better.

In 2005 we traded down, not up. We were picking 1.13 and traded with New Orleans and acquired 1.16 (which we used to take Travis Johnson) and a 2006 3rd rounder which turned into pick 3.2 and was used by Kubiak along with our 3.1 to take Winston and Spencer.

I don't get this trade with the Saints....................the Saints had the #123 and 125 in the 4th and #145 (one pick behind the Texans 5th round pick) and #163.

Why in the hell did we settle for #123 and #163......... Why didn't they push the envelope and get the #123 and #125? I am so confused with this team and just about ready to bail on this bumbling organization. I just don't get it.

A few picks later the steelers used 6th to move up close to the same amount of spots. Guys, the Texans have done plenty that deserves criticism, but let's not find fault when it is not warranted.

With all the money poured into the DL throughout our short history you'd think we'd find a good one somewhere. Hopefully Okoye is that guy, but this pick reminds me of the previous ones. Lots of potential but also a lot of questions. They'd better start getting some pressure on the QB because the secondary is paper-thin and it looks like we're going to have to watch CC Brown attempt to play FS again.... :bag

Anxiously awaiting 4th round pick here...

Sorry coolnerd, but l can't agree with that. We traded down 16 spots in the 4th round & got the LAST of New Orleans' picks in the 5th? We moved down that far just to acquire another 5th? We can't make up a 2nd round pick in the 5th.

This is what happens when your fans have zero trust in your organization. Nothing to criticize with that trade down. They got the value the pick was worth. If they tried to squeeze nickels out the saints they would have not gotten the deal done.

I somewhat agree. This organization never makes a move that makes people say, "WOW, GREAT MOVE TEXANS!" I'm beginning to think that sentence doesn't exist. Anyone know anything about Fred Bennett?

I agree.PS You were right and I was wrong about Jackie Battle. I thought some team would go Chris Henry over his pro day numbers. He is looking like a round 5-6-7 now.

Bennett has good size 6'1 195ish and decent speed , and at times played to that ability ...the key is that at times thing. Is not considered tough enough or have good enough ball skills to convert to safety, but does have good athletic skill overall.

Hoping that Battle does get drafted...Honestly, I would trust his record of production over Chris Henry's, but then I am just a guy on the internet.

I do have faith in them, but this makes me scratch my head.........why would you move down 16 picks only to get compensated by acquiring the last of New Orleans 5th round picks? I'm sorry, I would have demanded either that other 4th round pick or the 1st of the 5th round picks. If New Orleans would have wanted to trade at that point, they would have or would not have made it. I just don't see dropping that far down in order to help the Saints.Didn't we help them enough last season? :bag:

Did anyone ever stop to think that maybe the Texans know who they want and know that they would be there when they pick? There are alot of guys to be had late in this draft and it seems as though the Texans just wanted to be in position to get one.

A guy I know nothing about, so from Scott Wright

http://www.nfldraftcountdown.com/scoutingr...onharrison.html

Strengths:

Excellent size and bulk...Very athletic...Aggressive with a good motor...Is versatile and has played multiple positions...Very smart...A hard worker...Experienced...Has solid range...Technically sound...Has some upside...Good special teams potential.

Weaknesses:

Timed speed is below average...Is not a great tackler...Sub par ball skills...Is not as physical as a guy his size should be...Can be too aggressive at times and get fooled...More than likely won't be able to play corner in the pros...Underachiever?

Notes:

Was a three-year starter...Also played some cornerback as a senior...A intriguing prospect with some terrific measurables...Workout warrior who could get drafted a little higher than his play might indicate...At worst a backup and special teamer

Texans 5th round pick from the saints

Brandon Frye OT Virginia Tech

Good developmental type guy at this point. Not a ton of experience, but has a good profile of a zone blocking lineman.

Its a good pick. CN do you know why Tim Shaw is still on the board?
nevermind Carolina just took him
On Shaw, many people think he move around the defense becuase he really was not good any of the positions. Has great speed and athletic ability. some people think that his best position was RB and quite honestly never a fair shot to show those skills. His athletic profile is very similar to B. leonard who did get the chance to stay on offense.

Texans 6th round pick

Kasey Studdard OG Texas

Tough guy guard with limited athletic ability, but we have seen guys like this make it in the league before. Hey, if nothing else should quell the thought that the Texans won't draft a Longhorn.

It does for me, I was really wondering if they would. I'm not sure but I think he is the first Longhorn the Texans have had on their roster.
