*** OFFICIAL The Pacific Thread *** (1 Viewer)

I'm not surprised. As soon as they found out that Tim and I were writing about the Pacific, they decided to cash in.

One thing I didn't like from a trailer in the movies is that they are trying to shoot it differently from BOB's. They said they don't want to cover ground already covered. To me it's about the story not about the film-making. We loved BOB's. Give us more of the same. I don't want to see any director's tricks. Let the story speak for itself.

If I watch this series and it's ruined by aesthitics I'll be pissed.

It won't be, trust me on this.

Going to try and get my grandfather to watch this seeing as he served in Iwo Jima, Guam, and Lady Island.
I think it would be cool to hear his thoughts on this series!
Oof, just got done reading 'With The Old Breed' which described Peleliu and Okinawa, not sure why he would want to re-live that but if he's game, it would be great to get his perspective on it.

I was watching on tv and told my dad that it looked good. He said something interesting, that the story is based partly upon a guy's memoirs, Robert Leckie, who went to the high school he is now principal of in NJ. He said he came to the school and spoke at length with anyone who wanted to talk, and was a stand up guy. Neat to think this was the impetus for this miniseries.

He speaks about things here and there, and out of the blue. The things he saw were incredible and he was tormented for years after he came back from the war. It may be hard for him to watch now, not because of the emotion but because he now has one eye sewn shut (sucks but he is tough) from a combination of a very thin cornea and parkinson's (his eye muscles are very weak). I will see if he wants to watch, would be awesome for him to talk about things. I always try and tape it when he gets going. He's 89 - born 2/22/22 - so I'm lucky to still have him around. Two short stories for now.He was standing there in Iwo Jima and there were too many bodies that they needed guys to clean them up. My grandfather was 22, 23 and standing at the wrong place at the wrong time. They screamed his name because he was in front of the line, "Go get the bodies." He said he collected both American and Japanese bodies from 8am to 8pm with another guy. He said they moved hundreds just that day. Second, like I mentioned earlier, he sometimes comes out of nowhere and says things. Last year when we were watching the Yankees and he saw Matsui he said, "We pushed 10,000 Japanese off the island and into the water. They couldn't swim, and we didn't care." I asked him what it was like and he said, it was what it was. They didn't have time to think, just take orders and push them to their deaths. Now the number may be high, but the things he says are with such emotion. He sometimes just stares after talking shaking his head. Pretty crazy to think about what he saw.

War is the suck, no question about it but add in the intense heat, the fanatic nature of the enemy, the rain and the overall feeling of being in a meat grinder and I don't imagine that the Pacific island campaign could have been much worse. Lotta tough SOB's. GB them all.

They started it.

Has anyone seen the Airfield trailer on HBO ON-Demand?

It is one of the most intense, gruesome, war scenes I have ever seen. There is very little left to the imagination.
