OFFICIAL Underclassmen leaving early (1 Viewer)

From Draftdaddy.com

DD.com contributor Josh Buchanan has imformed us that Clemson juniors Phillip Merling and James Davis have decided to forgo their senior seasons to declare for the N.F.L. Draft. Teammate Aaron Kelly, a wide receiver, is still undecided.

Meanwhile, Auburn DT Pat Sims has also announced that he will skip his senior season to enter the NFL draft. The 315-pound Sims was a first-team All-SEC pick this season after making 11.5 tackles for loss including 4.5 sacks. Sims would appear to be an early to mid second round prospect at this point but in something of a down year at the position could conceivably work his way into the late first round area.

Add

Phillip Merling, DE Clemson--> Weight/Combine will determine his position. 2nd round grade, 1st round talent. Great overall prospect.

Geno Hayes, LB FSU--> Raw package but plenty of talent. Thought he should have stayed.

Courtney Greene, DB Rutgers--> Top SS prospect in the draft. 2nd round grade IIRC.

Ryan Grice-Mullen, WR Hawaii--> Better #'s than Bess at Hawaii. Didn't really watch them so someone fill me in here.

Taj Smith, WR Syracuse--> All I know is that he lit it up vs. Louisiville and has some blazing quickness.

***RUMOR***

Adrian Arrington and Mario Manningham to declare as per Rich Rodriguez.

I read an article last week that said it is assumed he is gone. I am not sure why he has not made the announcement yet. Hopefully it comes soon.

NFL early entry draft grades

I've come up with these preliminary draft grades based upon my own personal opinion after watching many of these players and after speaking with NFL scouts. These grades will obviously change depending on how players do in postseason workouts and games and based upon the changing opinions of scouts (and trust me, they change their minds on guys all the time).

Branden Albert, Virginia, OG: 3rd

James Banks, Carson Newman, WR: Undrafted Free Agent

Martellus Bennett, Texas A&M, TE: 3rd

Davone Bess, Hawaii, WR: 4th

Calais Campbell, Miami, DE: 1st/2nd

Jamaal Charles, Texas, RB: 2nd/3rd

Ryan Clady, Boise State, OL: Top 15

Anthony Collins, Kansas, OT: 2nd

Jermichael Finley, Texas, TE: 2nd/3rd

Brandon Flowers, Virginia Tech, CB: 2nd/3rd

James Hardy, Indiana, WR: 2nd

Derrick Harvey, Florida, DE: 1st

Geno Hayes, Florida State, LB: 4th

Erin Henderson, Maryland, LB: 2nd

Jack Ikegwuonu, Wisconsin, CB: 2nd/3rd

Jerod Mayo, Tennessee, LB: 2nd/3rd

Rashard Mendenhall, Illinois, RB: Top 20

Ray Rice, Rutgers, RB: 2nd/3rd

Pat Sims, Auburn, DT: 2nd

Kevin Smith, UCF, RB: 3rd

Taj Smith, Syracuse, WR: Undrafted Free Agent

Aqib Talib, Kansas, CB: 2nd

Devin Thomas, Michigan St., WR: 3rd

Mario Urrutia, Louisville, WR: 4th/5th

Aaron Kelly Clemson WR- gone

http://www.charleston.net/news/2008/jan/09...nter_nfl_draft/

According to that article he's 6 '5 and only 190.. dude needs to pack on some weight. Is there even a successful WR that is sub 200?
Plenty. Both Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne are sub 200. Granted, both are 6'0 and not 6'5. He looks absurd even in college and will most certianly have to bulk up. The best height/weight combo i could find was Drew Carter @ 6'3 200 but he's got 10 pounds and is 2 inches shorter than Kelly. And he's a stick.

Kevin smith also said he would return for his senior year, things change

A number of quality wrs are under 200lbs:Chad Johnson - 6'1" 190

Steve Smith - 5'9" 179

Torry Holt - 6'1" 193

Reggie Wayne - 6' 195

Marvin Harrison - 6' 181

Housh - 6'1" 197

Greg Jennings - 5"11 192

and a whole host of other guys like bernard berrian, reggie brown, santana moss, lee evans, dj hackett, santonio holmes, kevin curtis...the list goes on and on, the problem is none of the guys are 6'5". The good wr that comes closest to being that tall and that skinny is braylon edwards at 6'3" and 206lbs

wow I didn't know there were that many sub 200 wr's that are amongst the best in the league.

Does Courtney Greene really project as the top SS prospect? I love the guy but I think he needs some work in pass coverage. Obviously a big time hitter and when he's in the right position to make tackles, he makes them, but I've groaned plenty of times as he's taken some bad angles to runners.

I thought he could just as easily be a 6th-7th rounder.

vastly unhearalded IMO
not at that weight though
He doesn't appear that skinny (or tall for that matter). He showed Plaxico Burress-like talent from the Clemson games I've seen. Deceptive strength for a guy his size. Here are some highlights of the FSU/Clemson game. Some NICE plays by Kelly at the 2:33 mark, the 3:30 mark, and the 7:00 mark.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fSQtYDevfcE

One thing is for sure, he might be skinny but he's no Todd Pinkston. Might need to work on catching the ball with his hands on those jump balls, but that can be taught.

Here's another highlight against Wake at the 2:50 mark...

I really never heard anybody talking about him so I assumed he would stay for another year, but apparently there is at least one NFL scout who gave him a solid grade (2nd Round?).

Unfortunately. The senior class is dismal and while the Junior class is talented, none so far have declared. The big name, Michael Hamlin, will return to school for his senior year. That said, he could be passed by another Junior if one declares.Bad time to need a SS.

http://clemson.scout.com/a.z?s=46&p=2&c=718417

"Playing in the NFL has always been a dream of mine," DaJuan Morgan told Pack Pride. "I feel like I had a great season, I'm healthy, and I think I'm ready to play at that level.

"My family is happy for me. My mom knows that this is my dream and she's proud that I am in this position. My brother, DeAndre, is behind me too. He knows this is what I want, and he was telling me to go. He is behind me... they all are behind me."

Morgan had a huge junior season for the Wolfpack. An All-ACC selection, Morgan led the team in tackles (97) and tied for the lead in interceptions (3). He also totaled a team-high six pass breakups after splitting time at rover and free safety.

He feels he projects as a free safety on the next level, and that is where he is hearing he will play. The NFL notified Morgan that he projected as a fourth-round pick, but he believes that with a strong combine performance he can go even higher.

"The NFL gave me a fourth-round grade," said Morgan. "I was a junior and they said that was a safe projection.

"I didn't run [for NFL scouts] last year, and I think that after I run well at the combine I can do better than that. I believe I can at least be a third-rounder... I probably can go as high as the second."

Morgan wouldn't confirm that he signed with an agent, but he stated that he has all but decided on who he will ink with as he prepares for the draft.

"More than likely it will be CAA Sports," Morgan said. "I'm already out here in Phoenix, Arizona getting ready for this draft... doing the things I need to do where I can be selected as high as I can."

The hardest part of Morgan's decision? That would be informing the Wolfpack coaches he wouldn't be returning.

"It wasn't really a hard decision because I know this is what I want to do, but the hardest thing was telling my coaches."

Morgan has tallied nearly all the necessary credits to graduate, as he was honored on Senior Day. He is just an internship away from receiving his North Carolina State diploma.

Morgan is expected to be the only Wolfpack player to declare early for the NFL Draft. However, nothing will be official until the January 15th deadline has passed.

Boise State junior CB Joe Scandrick has become the second Bronco to enter this years’ draft. The 5-11, 190-pound Scandrick, who reportedly runs in the 4.45-4.50 range for the 40, joins star BSU Ryan Clady in the 2008 draft field. Scandrick is projected as an early-to-mid-second day pick this coming April.

INGRAM, KELLY HAVE CHANGES OF HEART

Two juniors who had previously said they were planning to enter the 2008 NFL draft have now changed their minds and said they're returning to school.

Clemson wide receiver Aaron Kelly, who yesterday said he was ready for the draft, said his mom talked him out of it.

"I felt like I was going against her," Kelly said. "I've never done that in my life. Why should I start now?"

And the brother of Florida tight end Cornelius Ingram, who had told Yahoo! Sports that he was turning pro, now says Ingram is staying at Florida.

Jan. 15 is the deadline to declare for the NFL draft. Until then, players who haven't hired agents and are still academically eligible are free to return to school, even if they have previously said they're turning pro.

Vanderbilt wide receiver Earl Bennett announced Thursday he will pass up a final year of eligibility and make himself available for the NFL draft.

Bennett leaves as the leading receiver in Southeastern Conference history with 236 catches in three seasons. He has 28 more catches than Craig Yeast, who played four years at Kentucky.

"If I came back, there was always a risk that I could get injured," Bennett said. "There were a lot of pluses and a lot of minuses. I couldn't go wrong with my decision whether I came back or whether I left."

Vanderbilt coach Bobby Johnson said he supported Bennett's decision to skip his senior season.

"This is one of the great things about America. You've got choices to make," Johnson said. "I have no doubts that Earl will be a fantastic player in the NFL."

Bennett did have incentive to stay: a chance to break the NCAA Division I Bowl Subdivision reception record. He would have needed 81 catches next season to pass Purdue's Taylor Stubblefield, who finished with 316.

"It's not all about records," Bennett said. "It's about your character and how you carry yourself on and off the field. Hopefully, people will remember me by my character."

Bennett finished 2007 with 75 receptions for 830 yards and five touchdowns. He is the only receiver in SEC history to have three 75-catch seasons.

Bennett has 20 career touchdown catches and ranks ninth in league history with 2,852 yards receiving.

In his freshman year, Bennett set an SEC record with 79 catches for 876 yards and nine touchdowns with current Denver Broncos starter Jay Cutler at quarterback for Vanderbilt.

"I had a great three years at Vanderbilt," Bennett said. "There's nowhere I would have rather been."

Some juniors we are still waiting on include...McFaddenF JonesStewartand still waiting, 5 more days
Any word on Steve Slaton WVU? Is he staying or coming out? I cant believe McFadden hasnt declared. I think Jones will stay to get some attention for himself. He may be overshadowed by McFadden and could drop.... yes i know a lot of rankings have him at #2 but still.

Reports are that Slaton is staying in school. Others have changed their mind though, so we won't know for sure until Jan. 15th.

I like bennett a good deal. Solid possession type that won't ever be a game-breaker but has good body control, great hands and runs very clean routes. Jerricho Cotchery clone. With the talent in this class, he's going to slip possibly out of day 1. If he goes to a team with open competition for the #2 spot, he could produce for FF teams much earlier than the rest of the class. One of the most NFL ready recievers.

YES! One of the big one's I was hoping for. Possibly going in the 2nd to the Buffalo Bills!I don't care. I just don't want to see Josh Reed ever touch the field again for the Bills. The man is horrible.

I read that description and immediately thought it sounded like Cotchery. One word later and I realized that's the comparison you were making.Good info though, don't know much about Bennett but if he falls out of the first day, chances are you could get him in the, what, late 2nd-early 3rd of most rookie drafts...

Nice article on Bennett.

He is the only player in SEC history with three 75-catch seasons.

Earl Bennett leaves for the NFL ranked among the all-time Vanderbilt and Southeastern Conference receivers:

Career receptions — 236 (VU 1, SEC 1)

Career receiving yards — 2,852 (VU 3, SEC 9)

Career receiving touchdowns — 20 (VU T2, SEC T20)

Single-game receiving touchdowns — 5 (VU 1, SEC T1)

Single-game receiving yards — 223 (VU 1, SEC 9)

Career TDs are kind of low, but I'm not sure who the QB was the last two years.
