Sounds like he wants an extension. I hope we don't give up a top prospect and give him an extension at his age. But I can see dusty pushing for it to happen.

I've talked myself into this being a defensible on-field move and a great off the field move, where he can replace Desmond in the clubhouse and the community. An extension would definitely kill that vibe.

From Rotoworld, good thing is sounds like none of the elite prospects are leaving. Still TBD what incentive Phillips will be given.

Phillips has 10-and-5 rights that allow him to block a deal anywhere, but you had to figure he was likely to waive them in order to be reunited with former manager Dusty Baker. Ladson also adds that while it's unclear which player(s) the Reds will receive in the deal, the Nats' top prospects "are not in the picture." Phillips is owed $27 million over the next two seasons and is expected to receive some sort of incentive as part of agreeing to waive his no-trade protection.

Several things stick out about Dusty Baker to the Nationals. First, is he going to completely destroy Lucas Giolito. And just about any other young arm in that system. Erick Fedde already had Tommy John once, can you imagine these kids after throwing 140 pitch games on Bakers whim. Second, unintentionally, if Phillips does move over, that opens up 2nd base for Jose Peraza in Cincy, who has prospect 80 grade speed, which makes me wonder if that Todd Frazier trade, the Dusty Baker pickup and Peraza on the move over and over this past year ends up getting everyone a value late round speedster.
Can you please document the number of outings Dusty has allowed pitchers to go 140 pitches? Maybe over the last 10 seasons he managed.

Enjoy Murph! (no shtick). A great guy to root for, if frustrating at times with random bonehead plays. We look forward to seeing him back up at Citi a lot.

Please don't ask that guy to post anything else in this thread. TIA.

Stephen Drew signs with Nats. A left handed hitting infielder that can't hit either righties or lefties. Great.
Platoon with Turner? Drew is a very good fielder though and he has some clutch hitting periods in his career. It's one year and he plays three infield positions, he offers flexibility but he's not a guy you lean on.

I don't think he'll be in a platoon. I think he'll be depth so Turner can play full time at AAA to start the year. My guess is Murphy at 2B and Espinosa at SS opening day. If they get 2012 or 2015 Espinosa it'll stay that way for most of the year, if they get 2013 or 2014 Espinosa they'll give Turner a shot after a month or two. Either way I don't see Drew getting more than spot starts, barring injury.

Maybe defensive replacement for Murphy and both Turner and Difo stay in minors.

Your paying a guy 14M a year to need a defensive replacement?

I'm not paying him anything but he's not the first player to have a nice contract that sucks on defense, right?

Storen for Revere. I'm not sure Revere is the answer in CF, but I guess decent return for Storen.
Numbers are a better hitting and faster Span. I have no idea about his defense though.

I'm pretty high on Michael Taylor. I hope they find a way to get him 300-400 AB without Harper getting injured. No way Werth plays 162.

Guessing Papelbon is staying because of his no trade clause and no one else wants him.

Gio Gonzalez going next and Chen signed to replace him?

Span has a bit more pop than Revere. Revere is a two outcome (single or out) player.

I hope they do keep Taylor involved too. I think he has a higher ceiling than Revere.

Revere's routes in the outfield are worth the price of admission alone. Two hard steps in, immediate sprint back, left, no, right... Somehow always gets there in the end though.

Hearing nats are pressing to get cespedes deal done. Belief is they're willing to go to about 100M/5 yrs, maybe a bit more.
Cespy going back to the Mets. Too much deferred money in the Nat deal. Don`t see why that would be an issue.

I think it was the opt-out after this year that the Mets gave him that was the difference. Also lost out on Heyward because of the opt-out. It doesn't really make sense for the Nats to do that because I assume part of the appeal would be having him under contract should Bryce leave.

Nats done with free agency? Are there any big bats left out there? I guess they could trade for Lucroy but hope they don't give up too much.

What pitchers are left? Or do they trust Roark at #5?

Seems like Nats finished #2 on a lot of guys this year in free agency.

Roark's not a bad #5, really. Better than most.

Love the Lucroy idea, of course. If they have to move Taylor to get him so be it, as long as they don't move Giolito, Turner or Robles. I'd love to see them deal now when his value is so low coming off a down year, but I think the Brewers might want to wait for that same reason and gamble on a return to form.

I kind of like being the overlooked underdog with all the question marks about makeup. Feels a lot like the 2014 preseason, with Mets fans sounding an awful lot like Braves fans sounded at the time.

What are the thoughts on Rendon this year? Guy went from a top 15 pick to being a complete afterthought.
He was hurt at the beginning of the year, and never really got into a groove once he came back (although he did seem to finally pick up at the end of the year). I think he'll bounce back some, but having trouble staying healthy was one of the scuttlebutts on him when he was drafted.

I heard Cespedes has an opt out clause after one year. It is essentially a 1 year, $27.5M contract. That is steep.

Time to get back on page 1

Trea going to break camp with the Nats?
Nope!   Nice of the team to be so considerate of your inquiry and send him to minor league camp just a few minutes after your post.

I'd expect to see him pretty soon, though. From what I've read it doesn't seem like Espinosa has corrected his severe offensive woes, plus I'd think an injury anywhere in the infield would result in a callup: Murphy can hit and play awful defense equally at any spot, and Espi can move to 2B, so they can find a way to make room for him no matter who goes down, assuming he's holding up his end of the bargain in AAA.

Michael Taylor mashing in the preseason.  If they run that corpse Werth out there more than Taylor, then that won't end well.  Give Revere and Taylor 80% of the at bats in left and center, give Werth the starts vs lefties and pinch hitting duties.

I wish.  These things have a way of working themselves out, though. They'll sit Werth twice a week I think. Those starts, plus some platooning with Revere, plus late inning defensive subs, plus the inevitable injuries should get Taylor up to basically a full season worth of playing time.

Revere's arm doesn't play in CF. It doesn't play in LF either, but that's the best place to hide it. Dusty should make Taylor his full time CF and let Revere and Werth share LF duties.

Well, that was fast.

Hopefully they postpone opening day until Friday. No sense standing out in the rain all day tomorrow.
Totally agree.  Just call it early.  This is exactly the reason you leave a day off after the home opener.  Hell, I already pulled my leave request for tomorrow.

Also FWIW the Nats play at 7 tonight in Atlanta, and the Marlins play at home at 5, so a day off benefits the home squad a tiny bit. All the more reason to push it back.

Nothing wrong with giving the city a good excuse to start the weekend a few hours early either.

Capital Weather Gang at Wash Post seems to think we may be able to play this one today

Saturday looks like a nasty day to be at the park. Remember to take your flask if you're heading to that one.

Thing I liked most about opening day at Nats park:  Harper getting the MVP and Silver Slugger awards

Things I liked least:  I can't believed they played this game when we are due a perfectly good 60 and sunny day tomorrow.  I think the players union has something to do with it, but it didn't stop me from blasting the Nats via twitter during the 90 minute rain delay when I was with 40k of my closest friends in the concourse.

Fun time though, thanks to @JZilla who always makes games fun by pulling a bunch of young ### to the seats with his suave maneuvering.  Must have had 10 chicks at our disposal at all times.

Also never met Tobias but he was on the big screen at the game for being some "Capital baller."  No idea what that means but that dude is legendary, hoping to get his autograph when I am at the park in late April.

They don't like me to participate in "Signature Sundays" because the crush of autograph hounds is a public safety hazard, but sometimes I'll wander over to the 1B side when I'm getting loose for a long day of watching painful Jayson Werth ABs.

Not a bad start to the season. 3-1 with four at home vs Atlanta coming next with Scherzer-Gio-Strasburg lined up gives us a chance to build a little early season cushion. Also the new eCash line at the expanded Shake Shack is the best thing to happen to the ballclub since the 2014 NL East title.
