What's the expectation for Revere now that he's back? Is he immediately back in fantasy lineups? Wait and see if possible?

Rendon dinger aside, could be trouble for the Nats with Scherzer out there.  Longball has been his achilles' heel dating back to last June or so.  Kinda hard to imagine Rizzo not hitting one out today.

ETA:  Or a foul ball that they inexplicably call a HR, at least.  What a load of ####.

Looking a little sweepy.  It's OK, we just need to be there in October when some dumb little thing happens and the whole city unravels.

I said I'd take one of four, that's all you can reasonably ask IMO. Today was obviously the easiest one to snag, but we just gotta get lucky once this weekend to make this road trip a massive success.  Although even 5-5 would exceed expectations before they left.

 
So Madden gives Harper the Bonds treatment, not once but twice with runners on first and second, and both times Zimmerman made an out. 

Not sure who should hit behind Harper but they are going to have to acquire someone most likely.  Harper could feasibly be walked 300 times this year and the damage will be minimal.

I'd give Milwaukee a choice of any 3-4 players in the farm system other than Giolito and Turner for Braun. Would solve a lot of problems for the remaining three seasons before Harper hits FA.

If they're trigger-shy, I'd change it up to go Revere-Harper-Rendon-Murphy-Ramos. Rendon has also been pretty awful but has much better peripherals than Zim, BABIP 80 points lower than normal accounts for most of his slow start. Plus if Harper bats with zero or one out more often it doesn't matter quite as much who is hitting directly behind him. But I assume Dusty is too old school to have his best hitter bat second.  God forbid anyone think outside the box around here.

Assuming they don't do either of those things, the best options are probably either moving up Ramos (quietly having a phenomenal season) to bat between Harper and Murphy or just say #### it and go lefty-lefty at the heart of the order.

Who's hitting ahead of him is much more important than who's hitting behind him.  

 
This Strasburg news is shocking.  Had no idea he was remotely interested in staying long term. Always felt he was sort of a long-term rental and eventually he would head back to SoCal for the second half of his career.

Yeah, an unexpectedly great surprise.  Throw in my thought that Boras would try to maximize leverage by having teams fight for him in the offseason, and I didn't think it would get done.  I guess with his injury history, they didn't want to take the chance on him getting hurt again this season.

Yeah I assume that's it, and obviously he liked the city and org a lot more than he let on.

Hopefully this will convince Nats fans to finally embrace the guy. The unfair expectations and criticism he's dealt with here is part of the reason I assumed he'd leave.

 
Lots of presumptions about Strasburg here. 

I always thought he is a real introvert, but like the Nats a lot.  Very intellectual, probably over thinks things too much.  But he is the type that would definitely like to stay in one place his whole career.  It was never clear to me that the Nats wanted to bring him back.

For the most part, Harper has the exact opposite personality.

 
Is there an issue with Giolito?  He was just dropped in my keeper league and I'm wondering why.  I'm assuming I should put in a waiver bid pronto.

 
That $70MM deferred for Strasburg is interesting.

Any word yet on how many games Harper is gonna get? Any chance he misses all of the Mets series? Eh?

 
Giolito pitched well last night. He's 21 and still adjusting to the requirements of AA which is the second biggest promotion of a player's career. 

He'll be promoted when he's ready.

At the moment I don't know whose place he would take. The weakest link in the rotation right now is Max Scherzer.  Of course if he can get on base 20% of the time he could give us an upgrade at the leadoff spot :rant:

I think he'll be delayed quite a bit both because of his struggles and because Roark and Ross both look better than expected. I thought we'd see him maybe in June, but I'm not sure that happens now even if someone goes down.  Whether he's worth wasting a fantasy roster spot on depends on how many bench spots you have, I guess.

Doing some quick calculations:

With a 5% discount rate:

     Net Present Value (NPV) with no deferrals:  $145M

     NPV with deferrals:  $128M

With a 10% discount rate:

     NPV w/o deferrals: $128M

     NPV w/ deferrals:  $98M

So the deferrals reduce the value of the contract between $17M and $30M.

Also note that the player is more likely to look it with a 5% discount rate and the team (business owners) are more likely to look at it with a 10% discount rate.

Also note that there are apparently opt out clauses for Strasburg after year 3 and 4.  If they are options for Strasburg (they usually are), these figures are what the Nats pay if Strasburg does not do well.  If he sees another big pay day, he can opt out and get a better contract.  So the Opt outs can be worth a lot of money for the player.

 
Great post-game interview by Max, guy is a peach.  Wasn't rooting for him tonight, but wasn't rooting against him either (I was probably the biggest Scherzer fan I knew when he was w/Tigers, proof exists in threads here).  I knew he'd K Upton so I was hoping for some sort of a rally where he got the 20, and Tigers tied it. 

JZilla and I were both surprised when they said Scherzer had 16 K's, but then again I missed almost two innings standing in line at the concessions.  Long lines, slow service, two stands ran out of food, the Nats Dogs place only had hot dogs and french fries by the 6th inning.  Come on!  I remember the first time I ever went to Nats park back in 2006 IIRC, it was awful.  It has improved since then but as soon as they have a crowd north of 30k like tonight, it's a ####### disaster.  They have to do better than that.  :thumbdown:

As far as losses go, gotta think a Harper bobblehead, seeing your favorite pitcher getting 20Ks and getting a picture with Leyland ranks up among the least painful :thumbup:

Yes used ecash, was :moneybag: on $1 hot dog night.  That makes the situation Wednesday even more frustrating. 

 
We went to Saturday night's game and had $15 for concession on each of our tickets.  Many places would not take the concession dollars on the ticket because their scanner was not working.  Other places would need to manually punch in the number on the ticket.  And it seemed like all the food vendors were ridiculously slow.

My wife was very upset that Hard Times Café is no longer there.  The nachos were her favorite.

 
Just gotta win one in NY to stay on top and keep the negative nancies from throwing fits. We'll get the Mets in DC next week without Syndergaard and get the ball rolling :thumbup:

The fact that the Mets' vaunted rotation looks pretty vulnerable these days once you get past Thor is a game-changer.  It brings the possibility of a 90 win division title into play.  But if we don't win either tonight or tomorrow it may be gone for a while.

Which part looks vulnerable ?  Degrom's 2.50 era or Matz's 2.86 ?  Lol.  Even Colon has a respectable 3.53 era at the moment.  Nats just don't have much offensively after Harper/Murph.  Mets are better everywhere.  Good luck with the 2nd Wildcard tho.

If I were a Mets fan I'd probably say that DeGrom dropping from 9.66 K/9 last season to 5.75 K/9 this season along with a slight uptick in walks and a jump in xFIP from 2.92 to 3.99 while losing 2.5 mph off his fastball, all the while complaining that he doesn't feel right a season after throwing 75 more innings than he ever had before would me a bit of a concern.

I might also say that Matz's recent elbow/forearm issues that sound exactly like the complaints you hear from pitchers before their UCL tears and they have to have TJ surgery would be a bit of a concern.

And I'd probably be a little concerned about Harvey's loss of almost 2 MPH off his fastball and his inability to get through a lineup a third time after going against doctor's orders last year and throwing 215 innings a season after TJ surgery.

You're probably right, though. I'm sure the rotation will continue to excel with nary a hiccup, and Neil Walker's 50 HR pace will continue unabated.  Enjoy your inevitable World Series triumph!

The fact that Degrom is still dominating w/o striking guys out should scare you, not make you feel good.  

If they had even a minuscule of concern over Matz, he wouldn't be sniffing the mound this Friday.  

Lets be real, your offense is pathetic.  It's anemic outside of 2 guys.  

And Neil Walker will hit 50 just like Murph will hit .400

I don't know what led you to believe I wasn't concerned about Scherzer.  I'm very concerned about his tendency to give up HRs. Not every fan is a blind homer optimist. Although I will point out that Wilson Ramos is currently batting .340/.375/.524, so the current state of the Nats' offense is more accurately described as anemic outside of three guys, not two guys. But I'm sure a knowledgeable baseball fan you knew that already, right?

Anyway, you're probably right. There is no cause for concern with the health of the rotation, and likewise no reason to expect that the Nationals will be able to keep pace given their anemic offense.  Enjoy your certain continued dominance over the Nationals, the NL East, and Major League Baseball. Should be a helluva parade in October.

 
Thanks.  I guess the optimism stems from the Nats history of choking coupled with that roster of mediocre/heartless talent.  They're like the 07-09 Mets.  Yikes.  

Our reign at the top will last as long as these young slingers do.  Again good luck to you guys in the 1 game playoff.
