You're going to like this story.

Sure enough, it was Ryan Clark, calling to thank Brown for being a fan. She told him that she was in class, and that most of her students happened to be Redskins fans, and asked if he would talk to them.

“Not a problem,” he said. “I’d love to.”

So Brown put her phone on speaker, and told her class that the Redskins’ new safety was on the phone. This being April 1, many of them didn’t believe her. But the man on the phone told the middle schoolers that he had played in Washington when they were little kids, that he was awfully excited to be back, and that he was looking forward to the season.

Some of the kids didn’t know what to say. Others starting singing “Hail to the Redskins.” Clark laughed, wished every well and said good-bye.

Defensive lineman Brandon Moore of the Washington Redskins has been suspended for the first four games of next season by the NFL for violating the league's substance abuse policy.

Moore has yet to play a down in the NFL. He was with the practice squads of San Diego and Denver last season. He later signed with the Chiefs, was cut and picked up by the Redskins.

Moore, who was not drafted out of Texas in 2013, is eligible for offseason activities and can play in preseason games before starting his suspension.

The NFL has levied 10 drug-related suspensions against Redskins players since 2011. Defensive players Rob Jackson and Jarvis Jenkins sat out four games last season, and tight end Fred Davis -- now a free agent -- is suspended indefinitely.

I love that people were getting excited for the preseason schedule being released. I really couldn't care less about the preseason, especially after last season when we went 4-0. All I care about is that no one gets hurt.

 
The odd parts of the 2 salary cap links I posted is that the Redskins are paying above the league average at 2 positions where they're weak: OL, WR

Never would have thought that about the OL, although I guess Trent being a top 5 OL by cap hit skews it up a bit.

Back when the radio guys were debating whether we should sign Desean, Grant Paulsen pointed out we were already 9th in the league in WR cap hit before signing him - I'd imagine we are top 3 now.

Robert Griffin III worked with quarterback guru Terry Shea this offseason to improve his mechanics.
Griffin spent six days in late-March working on his footwork and release point with Shea, who previously worked with RGIII prior to the 2012 combine. Shea suggests the majority of Griffin's struggles last year were due to his inability to drive off his surgically-repaired knee and believes his mechanics are "back on point" now that he's close to being fully recovered. "He looked 100-percent healthy," Shea told USA Today. "Reminded me of the old Robert Griffin. I liked everything I saw."

John Keim says the Redskins are trying out Armstrong and Austin Collie primarily to fill out their 90-man roster. Also

Four receivers were targeted at least 70 times by Cincinnati, where Jay Gruden coached last season. And in 2012, three receivers received at least 80 attempts. There was a rather big disparity, however, between how many passes A.J. Green got compared to the others (70 more than anyone else in 2012; 98 more last season). There is not the same dropoff in quality from 1-3 in Washington this year as there was in Cincinnati the past two years.

There’s still a chance Reed Doughty returns, though if they had wanted him that badly they would have signed him a while ago. He knows this, too. Doughty still has his fans in the organization, but I’d also heard there were some who weren’t sure what he had left. Hence, he remains unsigned. Doughty is a quality backup; I’ve never understood the venom spewed his way. He prepares, does what is asked, never complains and is a good special teams player. He’s excellent in the meeting rooms, too, which helps the younger players. Yep, that’s the sort of guy you should hate. It’s not Doughty’s fault the Redskins couldn’t solve their safety issue and kept needing him to start. But I also get it if the Redskins want younger safeties to groom; very logical. He had a good run here for a sixth-round pick from Northern Colorado in 2006.

Josh LeRibeus has told a couple reporters now that he weighed in at 317 pounds; that’s probably 40 pounds lighter than last year (just a guess based on how he looked). I have no idea about his conditioning, but if he’s at that size then I’d assume it’s good. I’d be slow to trust LeRibeus, who has a pattern of not handling his weight well.

Talking about Baker and Olivadotti, the LB coaches:

Because they’re legitimate linebackers coaches; Bob Slowik has coached in the NFL a long time and has worked with linebackers before. He was a former coordinator, too. And players seemed to like him, though I’m not sure what London Fletcher thought. But as a tandem, it was Slowik and his son (Jim Haslett, a former NFL linebacker, also worked with this group). That’s not a strong duo, especially compared to Kirk Olivadotti and Brian Baker. The latter has worked with pass-rushers for years (Julius Peppers, DeMarcus Ware and Charles Johnson among others). Olivadotti is a smart young coach who communicates well. He’ll have a big role in shaping the game plan, especially in the red zone. I’ll say this: The current defensive staff wanted to hire Olivadotti back a few years ago to coach the linebackers. According to sources, Mike Shanahan then told them Slowik, fired as the secondary coach, would be taking that job instead

My biggest gripe about Reed Doughty is that he plays way too many defensive downs. But that is a statement of the other safeties on the roster, not on Doughty.

I have heard that Slowik was a Shanahan mole of the defense and that he was incompetent as a linebacker coach. Also heard the reason London Fletcher was slow to sign last off season with the Redskins is that he did not like Slowik.

I read both those things, and I believe John Keim (among others) reported them as true.

 
I believe it. I remember Kirk Olivadotti was well regarded through his first stint here. It didn't make sense when he was replaced with Slowik, who I've never heard anything good about. I tried to trust that the coach knew best but that explanation makes much more sense.

 
T_Mac202 =: is it me, or is this defense presently constructed one of the slowest in the league? Needs to be addressed.

John Keim: Don't know if it's the slowest, but I agree it's one that needs to play faster. That also comes from playing smarter, knowing what to read, etc. But overall I agree that they could use more speed defensively. They need to get a little younger, which would help their team speed -- if they can play, that is. That's why the defense should be a heavy focus in the draft.

Day 3 of taking a look at the Redskins' need before free agency and where they stand three weeks before the draft. Today it's receiver after already talking about safety and the pass rush.

What they’ve done: Signed Andre Roberts and DeSean Jackson.


Problem solved: Yes. The Redskins needed a dynamic playmaker on offense and they just happened to fall into acquiring Jackson because of his release. Roberts gives them a solid slot receiver capable of getting downfield as well. Those two, paired with Pierre Garcon, certainly provides Washington a potentially dangerous attack. I say potentially because these are the Redskins and things don’t always work out as planned as you might recall. But all three are proven.

Great listen here with Terry Shea going in depth on his workouts with Robert. Robert even jumps on the air in the last 5 or so minutes. Definitely worth a listen and only validates the comments made by Cooley and Moss.
