***Official*** Washington Redskins 2014 Offseason Thread (1 Viewer)

Day 4 of training camp per Rich Tandler.

Colt McCoy’s first pass during 11 on 11 drills was picked off. That’s becoming something of a tradition. He did follow up with a deep completion on his second throw.

—Cody Hoffman, the undrafted rookie out of BYU, pulled in a couple of long passes during 11 on 11 drills. I’m not sure if there’s room for him on this team but he has some ability.

Morgan Moses had a tough go of during one-on-one pass blocking drills. He whiffed while trying to Trent Murphy and he got turned around at other times. Moses has some work to do but everyone should known that when he lasted until the third round. That draft position does not suggest a first-year starter.

It look like the main pass rush maneuver for the nose tackles will be to try to collapse the pocket by pushing the center straight back. At least that’s what Chris Neild and Barry Cofield did during the drill.

Members of the defensive back seven usually stop on their way in after practice and catch some balls from the JUGS machine.
The last 2 bolded items make me happy. Other teams have been collapsing the Redskins pocket by pressuring the middle. Nice to see the Skins defense starting to try it. And it would be nice to see some of those near-INT's we're used to becoming actual INT's.

Day 4 of training camp according to John Keim.

  1. It’s not a surprise that linebacker Brandon Jenkins was cut Sunday given his performance in camp. He did little and had a bad day, getting chewed out on a couple occasions by his position coach, Brian Baker. It was over the details and the missed chances that consistently occurred. Jenkins made progress at the end of spring, but he was in a big hole before that point. He quickly returned to that hole.
  2. Second-year linebacker Adrian Robinson had a good day, with Baker praising his speed and angles during individual work. Robinson showed that again later in the day. He would have drawn a holding penalty in the one-on-one drill from rookie tackle Morgan Moses on one rush, with Baker shouting praise, “You’re right where you need to be!” Later, Robinson sped around tackle Tom Compton with Baker slapping his helmet afterward.
  3. Though Jenkins’ release bodes well for Rob Jackson, it’s tough to say that he’s looked good as a pass rusher this camp. He did try a fake spin move to the inside, then curl back to the outside against Tyler Polumbus. It didn’t work; Polumbus shoved him to the ground.
  4. Corner David Amerson continues to have a good camp. He must keep in mind there’s a big difference between doing it in camp and in a game -- and the coaches harp to him on his focus -- but it’s a start. In a one-on-one drill against DeSean Jackson, Amerson played him well off the line and not falling for Jackson’s stutter move at the line. As Jackson ran an out route, Amerson was right there and the ball was wide. Secondary coach Raheem Morris shouted, “Way to stay in the fight 3-9!”
Gruden was not happy when Lache Seastrunk dropped a pass along the line of scrimmage near the sidelines. Nobody went to cover the loose ball -- all assuming it was a forward pass. Not sure if it was or not, but the coach loudly let them know to cover it. The ball rolled out of bounds.
Receiver Ryan Grant made another nice catch today, this time against safety Phillip Thomas. Grant reached high and caught the ball up high, allowing him to protect it from Thomas. Saw him make similar catches in college.
Robert Griffin III connected with Grant on a beautiful throw to the sidelines, over the top of corner E.J. Biggers. Just a nice throw. Took 2.8 seconds with good protection. Griffin appears to be throwing with more velocity this season, getting more torque. At least I think that’s the case.
Grant also reached back slightly on pass from Cousins, but was able to grab and keep running without breaking stride.
Once more I see the quarterbacks throwing with trust to receiver Andre Roberts. Griffin made a decisive throw to Roberts down the seam on one pass.

Chris Russell on Saturday and Sunday training camp. http://www.espn980.com/includes/blog/index.php?action=blog&blog_id=8&post_id=19131

Robert Griffin III had his moments over both weekend days. On Sunday, one of the prettiest passes you will ever see was released by Griffin who threw a dart along the sidelines over the shoulder of rookie Ryan Grant in stride with tight coverage. What stood out more is that Brandon Meriweather was blitzing and Griffin recognized it, stared down the gun barrel and released it quickly, with accuracy and precision.

In that same sequence, he hooked up with Pierre Garcon a few times on post routes and then on one play, he went play-action right with a boot to the backside. He tried to flip his hips while running laterally to make a play and throw. He couldn't find anybody and still had enough speed to out-race Orakpo to the sideline before running into the crowd. The play resulted in virtually nothing, but it was a big something if you know football. It was an encouraging sign to me.

Kirk Cousins threw an absolute seed on a rope to Santana Moss in stride and so quick and hard that Tracy Porter who had underneath tight coverage, did not even react. It was an absolute bullet with precision accuracy and timing.

David Amerson jumped a near pick six in front of DeSean Jackson off of Robert Griffin. Amerson is playing so free.
Brian Orakpo jacked up Trent Williams one time, then jumped off-sides twice before Williams got him & pushed him down by engulfing him with his strength. On another rush, Williams quickly walled off Orakpo to his left and on an outside pass rush before quickly shuffling his feet to the right and stoning Orakpo as tried to dart inside. Just textbook stuff, and a lot of fun to watch.

I thought LG Shawn Lauvao looked pretty good on the one on one rushes I saw him involved in. Kory Lichtensteiger handled Barry Cofield twice.
In a WR-CB one on one session, David Amerson was beaten by DeSean Jackson on a beautiful throw and hook up with Kirk Cousins. Those drills are designed to be won by the receiver but Amerson had fairly tight coverage so it was a good sign.

In another matchup, Amerson blanketed Jackson who won with an outside release as Amerson did not jam him with his hands. Amerson quickly recovered and shadowed Jackson for an incomplete along the sidelines, drawing praise from Raheem Morris. (Thanks to NBC-4 Washington for the video replays)

In a team session, Amerson jumped a near pick six in front of Jackson off of Robert Griffin. Amerson is playing so free. Mentally and physically.
Chris Baker continues to impress every time you see him. He stuffed a reverse by Pierre Garcon from left to right well behind the line of scrimmage. He stayed home and was disciplined.

@TarikCSN I value my worth on more than Twitter followers.
I thought I saw Zac take a similar shot at someone a few days ago but I can't find it right now. Can't remember who it was; may have also been Tarik.

Anything on Chris Thompson? Could he be Grudens Bernard? He was exciting to watch at FSU.
Lot of good things on the local news about how explosive he looks, how well he is picking up the blitz, the report said that Gruden was even putting in packages for him on Offense. He was one of the reporters Surprises of camp so far.

FWIW, I think it was RG3 who said they want Thompson to be their Sproles.

Maybe I would have a better opinion of him if I didn't live in this area but the more I listen to RG3 every single day the more I don't like him

1. Can't stop talking about Shanny in his interviews. Every day it is some under the table or out right dig at how things were last year. I mean they are still talking about whether he should have started at the beginning of the year. Having a healthy ego is one but this is reaching the spoiled coddled phase.

2. It is clear that he has a lot more control over this team than just a normal quarterback. It really seems like Gruden is the just a head coach in name only and that RG3 is the offensive coordinator of this team. Now they are talking about using the read option less and less even though Gruden mentioned a couple months they don't want to take it away from him. We all know RG3 doesn't want to be a read option QB like 2012

The more this team talks about Shanny and how everything wrong was because of him, the more pressure they put on themselves to perform this year.

I must say I agree with everything you said...it's fine by me as long as he is good as he doesn't seem like a bad person, but I am with you on my impression of him. All of the cattiness back and forth with him and Shanny was so ugly, I hope we don't have any more of that with anyone else. Oh well, it's not like I have to hang out with him...just play well and slide/get out of bounds please. I am sure some of the resentment towards him stems from the bad season which wasn't all him.

That is certainly concerning at worst and annoying at best if that is in fact the tone. It sends a message of him/them not having their minds in the right place and focusing on the wrong things. Get over it. You have a season to prepare for and it no longer involves Shanny. Philly, Dal and NYG won't give you a tissue for your Shanny tears. They will spit in your eyes and pour salt in the wounds... Then laugh about it on the sidelines. In a division as wide open as theirs seems I hope they pull it together, soon.

Yeah, as we saw in second half of 2012 - winning will cure just about any issue. I actually don't think they are the division is that wide open though, I think the Eagles will be very good for awhile now...although I have a closet admiration for Chip so maybe I am biased

Yeah, I've never really understood why Griffin always received so much praise for his public words. When he was drafted, there was always talk about what a great guy he is and how he says the right things, etc. I never really got the love for that aspect of him. I wouldn't say he's been horrible in that regard, but a lot of times his comments are just kind of annoying. For the most part, though, I've assumed that's me getting older and losing connection with younger people. I've looked past it and don't really care because I think it's more about me than him. Just stay off my lawn and throw TDs.

And really, I just don't watch interviews anymore or really read many quotes. I've just lost interest in that aspect of sports. I have no idea what he's been saying about Shanny. Don't really care.

Yea. I think partially, its just people nitpicking. Any player like him is going to be forced to give many many interviews and these reports are going to try to get him to say things. It is what it is with players of his popularity. I havent seen to many of his interviews lately but i havent heard him bashing shanny. i have heard comments that could be interpreted that way which were likely lead by reporting asking him about shanny. Anyway, i dont really care as long as he is practicing hard which it seems he is.

I'm not sure the offensive line is doing so well.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/football-insider/wp/2014/08/01/redskins-training-camp-observations-from-day-9/

  • With Trent Williams resting his bruised shin, Tom Compton got the start at left tackle. That was pretty telling because until today, Compton had worked exclusively at right tackle (behind Tyler Polumbus, and then in place of Polumbus when the veteran was away). Compton does have experience as a swing tackle, because that’s what he spent all of last year doing, flip-flopping in practice. But rookie Morgan Moses has worked as the second-team left tackle throughout training camp. However, he has struggled, and with Williams sidelined, coaches felt that Compton was more ready to step into a first-team role. The Redskins did give Compton more tight end help than they did Williams. Compton wasn’t perfect as two shaky plays stood out. But as a whole, he had a fair showing.
  • The first play when Compton appeared to be in some trouble: Brian Orakpo got around him only to have Compton slide back and around to his left more, trying to keep the linebacker from getting to the quarterback. The rest of the pocket was beginning to collapse, and Griffin sensed Orakpo coming up from behind, and so he stepped up, but Kory Lichtensteiger and Shawn Lauvao both were getting shoved into his path. The quarterback spun off the line and took off to daylight off Lauvao’s shoulder and picked up 20 yards, much to the delight of the fans.
  • Griffin had another impressive play, but this one wouldn’t have counted. Griffin rolled to his right with Murphy and Riley breathing down his neck. Both Compton and Chris Chester appeared to be guilty of holds as Griffin continued to scramble and then hit DeSean Jackson for 60-yard touchdown pass. The fans, and some players, celebrated until they saw that the officials hadn’t missed the hold, and a couple yellow flags marked the spot.

Rookie outside linebacker Trent Murphy is doing well in the pass-rushing department but has some work to do in pass coverage. He was called for illegal contact four times while matched with tight ends.
Hall, Amerson, Biggers, and Breeland reportedly look better than the other cornerbacks including Porter.

Another battling cornerback who has yet to consistently stand out is Terry Porter, whom Washington signed this offseason with plans of using him as the nickelback. But thus far, Biggers still looks like the better of the two, and despite his youth and inexperience, rookie Bashaud Breeland looks a little better than Porter. If you had to go with four cornerbacks right now, I’d have to say Hall, Amerson, Biggers and Breeland. But, there’s still time for things to change. Porter did miss all of the offseason with shoulder surgery rehab, so we’ll see how he looks in a couple weeks and if he’s able to make up some ground.
Also

  • Coaches say inside linebacker Perry Riley has made a jump forward in his development, and Riley credits the work of assistant Kirk Olivadotti. Riley says the coach, hired this year as Jim Haslett revamped his staff, has so much knowledge and a great way of teaching. He feels like he will be a more complete linebacker this year. The one-on-one pass coverage drills for the inside linebackers exhibited this. Riley had done poorly on his first two attempts and was guilty of illegal contact as he got turned around and grabbed fullbacks Stephen Campbell and Darrel Young to keep from losing them. Olivadotti pulled Riley off to the side and walked him through aspects of his technique that needed fixing. Riley came out the next time and intercepted a Colt McCoy pass intended for Young.
  • Defensive coaches are very encouraged by how Riley and fellow inside linebacker Keenan Robinson have looked. Those two seem to be locked in as the starting ‘jack’ and ‘mike’ ‘backers, respectively.

Morris is better than the other RB's at pass protection. http://forums.footballguys.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=702427&page=43#entry17061928

Pass protection remains a work in progress for the Redskins, particularly when it comes to blitz pickups by the running backs. We’ve seen struggles out of that group during team drills, and today proved no different. One of the one-on-one drills of the day called for the running backs to engage an oncoming pass rusher and keep him from getting to the tackling dummy. Alfred Morris seemed to fare better than his fellow backs, and Evan Royster for the most part did okay. Chris Thompson struggled in his first, second and third cracks at the drill. Because he’s a smaller guy (generously listed at 5 feet 8 and 193 pounds), it’s not easy to hold off a pass rusher, even if it’s a younger Will Compton (6-1, 245), much less a starting-caliber linebacker like Perry Riley Jr. After getting beat by Rob Jackson, Compton and Jeremy Kimbrough, Thompson did show a little improvement in the fourth attempt. He widened his feet a little just before contact, got better leverage, and did stand Kimbrough up, briefly. Kimbrough did manage to shove Thompson backward with his second effort. Lache Seastrunk struggled in this drill as well. Compton got by him with relative ease. Roy Helu Jr. had mixed results here, although because of his experience, and the other backups’ inexperience and ineffectiveness (thus far), he could have an edge.

Gruden still doesn’t sound sold on Josh LeRibeus. He has been kind of lukewarm on the third-year guard every time he is brought up. He did commend LeRibeus for coming into camp in shape, but Gruden added that he’s looking for consistency and a little more drive out of LeRibeus. In today’s one-on-one drills, LeRibeus did well in his matchup with Chris Neild, but he definitely struggled against Barry Cofield. Right now, there’s not a huge difference between LeRibeus and rookie Spencer Long.

This is new. I heard this part of the interview on the radio. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/dc-sports-bog/wp/2014/08/01/deangelo-hall-says-mike-shanahan-used-to-overrule-jim-haslett/

Not only was Shanahan overruling Haslett in defensive meetings and in on-field play calls, he was also going to individual players telling them to play differently than Haslett was teaching them. From DeAngelo Hall

“Yeah, I mean, it was probably more difficult for Jim than us,” Hall said. “You know, we were going through all week practicing a certain call, knowing that we were going to call it in certain situations. And there would be certain times where Mike WOULD overrule Jim. And I told Jim, I understand where you’re coming from. There are certain techniques and things that I want to do that Mike would tell me the same thing — ‘Well, you know, I kind of want you to play it like this as opposed to that.’

Morgan Moses could possibly be cut according to the Washington post. I'm sorry guys but I told you guys he sucked. We traded down in the second round too when we could have had Bitonio. Who btw is probably going to start day one and be in the league 10+ years.

This team kills me every year. They need to scout better. Drafts like we had this year can really set a team back. Smh so pissed. Srry rant over.

The Skins practiced with the Patriots today and got outplayed. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/football-insider/wp/2014/08/04/redskins-training-camp-observations-from-day-12/

Overall, the Redskins players felt good about the work they got in, and welcomed the chance to face different competition. If they used today as a measuring stick, they’d probably agree that they have a ways to go. It was pretty clear which team went 12-4 last season.
There's a LOT of player-specific information in that article. Mike Jones has been doing some really good reports on training camp.

At the start of the team drills, it seemed as if Griffin had started getting rid of the ball more quickly than on other days. Later, the pace slogged down a bit with the Patriots doing a good job of taking away his deep options, and the line struggling to hold off the rush.
Center Kory Lichtensteiger didn’t do poorly in his matchups with Vince Wilfork, but there were some struggles out of Tyler Polumbus and Chris Chester. Shawn Lauvao had an up-and-down day. Trent Williams looked like his typical reliable self versus Donta Hightower.
Griffin struggled to find comfort in the pocket. The differences in Washington’s line play and that of New England’s was noticeable. Brady has a clearly defined pocket to step up into. He has trust in his line. He doesn’t even appear to notice the rush as he looks downfield, steps up and delivers a throw. Griffin, meanwhile, had a shaky (at best) pocket to operate from today, and protection broke down frequently. I think Brady may have had one play that would have been a sack (Ryan Kerrigan, Chris Baker and Brian Orakpo had collapsed the pocket around Brady). Griffin had at least four.
Washington’s offensive line did look pretty solid in run blocking, however.
Edelman gave everyone from David Amerson to DeAngelo Hall to Brandon Meriweather to Kerrigan fits in pass coverage today.
The Patriots’ pace and precision made Washington’s secondary look slow. It’ll be interesting to see how they do by Thursday, when they’ve gotten a feel for how New England operates.

I don't think Moses will be cut nor do I think he'll be a bust.

Also from Mike Jone's report.

It was a rough day for cornerback Tracy Porter, who got burned by Mallett while covering Boyce. Porter got turned around on the play. Porter later got burned by Brady on a pass to wide receiver Brandon LaFell. Porter is hoping to make this team as the third or fourth cornerback, but he’ll need better showings than this. Two of Porter’s competitors – rookie Bashaud Breeland and third-year pro Richard Crawford – recorded pass breakups today.
Here’s a look at who Ben Kotwica trotted out for his first-team kick return unit, which could give some insight as to the roles that some bubble guys can carve out for themselves: Safety Trenton Robinson, linebacker Darryl Sharpton, running back Roy Helu Jr., linebacker Will Compton, Breeland, linebacker Adam Hayward, tight end Niles Paul, fullback Darrel Young, tight end Logan Paulsen, defensive end Kedric Golston with wide receiver Andre Roberts as the returner.

Facing the Redskins’ first-string defense, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady torched the secondary. The future Hall of Famer often targeted second-year cornerback David Amerson.

Typically accurate on the short routes that are a staple of the Patriots’ offense, Brady controlled Washington’s defense. From start to finish, Amerson appeared out of sync. It was as tough as it looked, Amerson acknowledged.

“He caught us off guard,” Amerson said. “We’ve got to do a better job communicating the calls. Guys didn’t really know what to expect.”

Throughout training camp, Amerson and No. 1 corner DeAngelo Hall have performed well against deep balls. Often, Coach Jay Gruden and offensive coordinator Sean McVay have tested Hall and Amerson, sending wideout DeSean Jackson on long routes. The Patriots took a different approach.

Brady played catch with receivers, who regularly completed their routes in front of defensive backs. On some plays, the Redskins also appeared to be confused about coverage responsibilities. For any defense, that’s a big problem against a Brady-led offense.

The odds of Moses being cut this year are close to 0. Settle down Nancy.

Moses will be a backup for many years. Still need a young RT for the team that is capable of starting.

I'm still miffed about not taking Bitonio personally. Was an obvious choice, we got cute, and it looks like it will bite us.

Everyone seems to like this Ryan Grant dude. Could be tough to break through the WR depth and make the roster, but he's reportedly been impressive.

Sounds like no Garcon or DJax tomorrow night. I'm fine with that. Don't push guys that are nursing nagging injuries this early.

I actually think the Murphy pick was solid. Moses was bad. Long I can't make out because there wasn't any pre-draft workout data to account for. The rest was camp fodder IMO. If someone rises to the occasion, then all the better.

Wish we'd made a move for Gabe Jackson in round 3 and Gabe Ikard in later rounds to improve the interior OL. We took ourselves out of the Bitonio race early.

Agreed Murphy is a solid player but we didn't need him. We needed Bitonio who is a good/great player. No comment on Moses.

With Orakpo franchised, it does provide leverage in 2015 when he and Kerrigan are wanting prime OLB money. That's why I'm okay with the pick.
