i need to set aside some money and just get a speedmaster. I love the old Moonwatch so much. i'd probably never take the damn thing off.

Simple to swap as long as it fits. 

You mentioned the Explorer with white dial a few pages back. Have a good friend selling his white Explorer 16570, bought it from Wempe with all of the paperwork. 

He wants $5k, if you're interested, let me know and I can connect you guys.

Is it BS that this is brand new with manufacturers warranty for $3k+ off msrp?  Is it still not worth $5300 or is it a good enough deal at this point?

I'd say one thing before even addressing this watch and the price, and it is the most important thing I can say:

Make sure you're buying what you want, not because you're getting what you perceive as a deal. I say this bc you have gone through about 8-10 different models in this process. Have you tried this watch on in the store? Are you positive this is the watch you want? Make sure you are certain, once you are 100% sure it is the watch you want, then I would start shopping on price for that exact model, but not until then.

I'll dig around and see about price, but I'm not very familiar with this model. In general though for Omega, 30-40% can be found BNIB.

I tried on all of the watches that I linked in that longer post, except for the pepsi tudor or the air king (which they didn’t have). I tried on the Rolex Milgauss and a different tudor in lieu of those two for fit. 

I liked them all, but the two Omega’s looked the best and i liked them with bracelets or strap. My wife didn’t like the Rolex on my wrist.

The wife has an important opinion on everything, except watches... you wear it daily, so while that goes into consideration, I wouldn’t take it with more than a grain of salt. When you put on the one, you’ll usually know right away. If you’ve gotten there, time to start hunting.

Also, just an FYI, you can get rubber b bands for most Rolexes if you want a strap. My buddy got one for his Tudor to mix it up, nice combo.

With Rolex professional models, you won’t get any discount, but Omega is a different ballgame. At a minimum you should be looking for 30% off and if you score, maybe even 40%. 

If your decision is final, start combing everywhere. Omegaforums.net, timezone, watchuseek, EBay, rolexforums, chrono24, watchrecon, etc...

That’s how you’ll save some good coin. When you find it, send me the link, I’m pretty good about weeding out good sellers and bad sellers. I’ll let you know what you’ll want to ask and do to verify things before the purchase. I’ve bought and sold dozens of very expensive watches over the years doing this, it’s my backyard.

 
Just as an example of a situation you can score on:

Outside of dealers with low overhead using the internet to sell at healthy discounts (and remember, even for dealers, it’s a cash intensive business, you find the right dealer who is cash strapped for the month, you can score there too), a buyer who isn’t a huge watch guy makes a purchase and has buyer’s remorse afterwards (this is why I’m telling you to be 100% sure you found the one, you don’t want to be this guy) has only a few options.

1) Trade it back where he bought it for something else (he’ll take a beating)

2) Sell it to a jeweler who will give him wholesale price (he’ll take a beating)

3) Try to find an avenue to sell it privately and minimize the loss. Say someone bought the watch you like for $5300, they have it for 3 months and don’t like it. Best they’ll get from a jeweler is like $3k-$3400. You find this person and you’re buying it 3 months old for $3900ish.

Last summer, I bought a Cartier Calibre Diver DLC from a private seller. I had never tried it on, but I loved the appearance. Watch retails for $9k, but anyone paying retail on this watch is a maniac. Anyways, it was 3 months old, I bought it for $4k. When I got it, I loved the look, but the lugs are curved on this watch, which made it uncomfortable to me. Furthermore, that also made it impossible to sit on my wrist perfectly. After wearing it for a few months, I had to get rid of it, sold it for $5100. If you find the right deal, you’ll never get hurt.

You will want to contact the seller to find out the nature of the manfucturer warranty. My understanding is that Omega warranties are transferrable--but for any manufacturers warranty to be active--the warranty card/papers have to be stamped/signed/dated by an authorized dealer.  It is possible that this particular company has a relationship with an authorized dealer to where they effectively "broker" the watch between you and an authorized dealer.   Most  times these "in between" brokers don't have accounts/contracts with the brands that they are selling--so they are not handcuffed to the discounting rules and protocols that are typically involved with being authorized dealers.   However--with that said---many of the fine watch manufacturers look down on this practice and being in the trade--I've heard of several stories where authorized dealers that open up their inventories to discount brokers have had their accounts pulled.  This is why many of these types of relationships that still exist involve authorized dealers and these secondary brokers being from different countries/markets-- as it makes things more difficult for the major brands to locate and destroy them.   Also many of these secondary brokers will purchase and sell watches from around the world as they will utilize the fluctuations in the values of currencies to their advantage.   

The questions that you will want to ask are: with the manufacturers warranty--"who is the authorized dealer and will that dealer be signing and dating the card" and "is the watch a US model  or an international model?"   The answer to these questions will help clarify many of your concerns.

So I have checked all of the sites listed above, as well as chitown and google for the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean GMT black & white 215.30.44.22.01.001

Chitown had the best deal at $4900 but it was out of stock. 

There are two options on Chrono24 for around $5300. Can I try to negotiate this to $4900 while asking the questions you guys have graciously recommended?

Have you tried emailing Sergey at Chitown? He's good at communication with potential customers. You should be able to find out if he could have the watch in soon.

I tried on a black Tudor Pelagos and the Pelagos LHD as well. I really like them both. Put the Heritage Chrono on again too and still like that. 

I am leaning towards one of them now. I still like the Omegas but i am not finding those deals and it is a little odd that their value takes a beating like a car leaving the lot

That Omega Seamaster Tuxedo is on Jomoshop for $5200 now.  hmmmmm

 
Do any of you have experience with watch winders? I didn't even realize these things existed.

I searched for recommendations on the number of turns my Hamilton needed to be wound each day. I was doing 20-25 each morning. I found a site that said 600 rotations per day 😟. That's when I realized people use little boxes that wind their watches for them.

 
I still never bought a watch. I was going to just get something at Torneau because that seemed easiest etc. but they totally screwed me on just replacing a leather baum et mercier strap. I dropped it off in January and they kept my watch until July where they gave me a temp strap and then the real one came in September. They promised to comp the strap and when I went to finally pick it up, they reneged and tried to charge me $300. So I just took my watch and told them they lost a sale and that I didn’t care about money, it was about their word. 
 

so anyway, where should I buy a watch from?

Honestly--it just depends on the watch you want.  If you want a watch where the provenance of purchasing from an authorized dealer is a value add (any Rolex professional model, many Pateks, some of the Audemars Piguet models..etc)--you just need to locate the closest authorized dealer to you and proceed accordingly.  If you are thinking about getting a nice watch--but one that doesn't carry the value add of purchasing from an authorized dealer---you can go to well established grey market dealers (joma shop, authenticwatches.com...etc).    If you want long term customer service and are willing to pay a slight premium over online prices--you may want to contact reputable local independent jewelers and ask for pricing and availability for whatever made/model you are looking for.

I am still interested in a few of the Tudors. How is Chrono24 as a vendor?

 
I don’t get the reference numbers. I am looking on authentic watches and the same watch is on there twice as “brand new” and the reference numbers are the same but for the last four digits 0001 vs 0006. Is one a newer model?  The descriptions are identical.

Yes----it's not a bad path at all.   I've had several customers come in that have purchased from authenticwatches and everything that I've seen from them has been solid. They are a legit grey market dealer--you won't be getting fakes or replicas from them.   You might not get a factory warranty from all of their products--but I do believe that they supplement their timepieces which their own warranty.  They have been around for a while--so if they have the watch you want in stock--they are a pretty solid and safe bet.

So I’ve got an authorized Rolex dealer in town. What happens if I walk in and want the base model stainless Daytona.

1. do they laugh at me?

2. how longs the wait?

3. what the actual price I’m gonna pay vs the 12.4 list?

2) They'll quote you 5-10 years

3) $22k black dial, $24k white dial

I've got the white, along with a Pepsi, SD50, and Hulk... Waiting on a blue Skydweller and I'm done with my SS Rolex collection. Just one PP Nautilus and I'm done with my collection in general for a decent stretch (excluding Omega Snoopy). 

When the 50th anniversary Omega Snoopy Award comes out, I'll want that, sadly the 45th is the one that got away :kicksrock:  

I don't even like my Daytona, of all my watches (excluding beaters), my least favorite. Prob just pass it along to one of my kids in 20 years.

Thanks. Not sure why you were made fun of, watch collecting has been a thing for a long time. No different than spending money on coins or ball cards or just about anything else. At least a watch has some inherent usefulness.

If I buy from a local jeweler, what premium should I expect or be willing to pay over the authenticwatches.com price?  

The watch I am looking at is $3200 on the website, which is about $1200 less than msrp.

The jeweler is seeing when they can get the watch in for me and then will quote me a price. I want to be able to reasonably negotiate and know when to just walk away and order online.
