Netherlands up to a surprising 3-1 lead in the 5th over the Dominicanos, but Ponson has been chased and the Dominicans are threatening.

A Netherlands upset would be nice, but I'm not holding my breath.

The DR team lost alot of stars that shouldve been playing. Theyre not as good as they should be. That being said thats still a pretty huge upset.

This Canada team has a stacked lineup. If they had Bedard theyd probably be considered among the favorites. That being said they can easily win this game with that lineup.

Surprised me... Netherlands with the highest Per Capita baseball viewership in the world?!

Never would have guessed

Stacked? We have 6 MLB'ers on our team, i wouldn't consider that stacked. If we had Rich Harden, Erik Bedard, Jeff Francis, and Ryan Dempster then we'd be in good shape. Dempster is an ####### for not playing but what are you gonnna do.

A 2, 3, 4, 5 of Martin, Votto, Morneau, and Bay is probably the 2nd or 3 best in the whole WBC

This event is awesome. To the MLB owners that want it to fail for selfish reasons: I can't find a smiley for you

WOW what a ####in game! How can anybody not like this tournament. It felt like a playoff game. Mind you whoever lost this game still has an easy win vs Italy next but it still was a nervewracking ending.

BTW did I hear right? Velanzuela is starting Silva and then relieving him with King Felix vs Italy? Are they stupid? Save Felix for the 2nd game.

I think they just need 1 win to advance. If they take the first game, they can coast through the 2nd game and still be in the next round.

Great game for USA. I was on the edge of my seat. Dunn was hilarious in the dugout. :goodposting:

Its double elimination. If they win game 1 they play USA. If they lose vs USA they play (probably) Canada in a winner takes all game to the 2nd round.

After yesterday, the Dominicanos are going to stomp a mudhole in Panama today.

BTW, is "Dominicano" politically correct or would I get stabbed if I said that in the DR?

The Dominican Manager (Alou?) just pulled the infield in in a 0-0 game in the 2nd inning. Brilliant.

I can't take any baseball tournament very seriously that has a 10-run mercy rule. What do they think this is? ####### Little League?

In international baseball competitions sanctioned by the IBAF, including Olympic competition and the World Baseball Classic (WBC), games are currently ended when one team is ahead by 10 runs, once at least seven completed innings are played by the trailing team. In women's competition, the same applies after five innings.
In NCAA and NAIA college baseball, the game will end if a team is ahead by at least 10 runs after seven innings in a scheduled 9-inning game, or five innings in a scheduled 7-inning game.

It's only in the first two rounds, and I'm pretty sure it's designed to help protect both team's bullpensSince there are strict rules and regs regarding pitch counts, with mandatory days off if you go past certain pitch counts, etc having a mercy rule helps to keep managers from hurting their teams for subsequent games by forcing them to pitch guys in a blowoutNot a huge deal IMO

As much as I'd love a Netherlands win here, I think this Bergman guy they have pitching for them is gonna get spanked eventually. His fastball is flat as a board.

And as I type that, he gets the inning-ending DP. Ah, irony.

Exactly. In fact, I actually like it. Is there anything more boring than watching a baseball game when one team is ahead by 10 or more runs? No, there isn't.

Dominican Republic 1-0 Netherlands

Bottom 11, 1 out, Marmol throwing for the Dominicanos, and the Netherlands have a runner on 3rd.

WOW!

Marmol throws it away and Kingsale advances two third on the throw!

WINNING run at 3rd, 1 out! OMFG!!!

2 out, Marmol made Schoop look stupid.

Edit: Now Marmol is walking Randall Simon.
