Oh...the Woes of a League Commissioner.. (1 Viewer)

I've run the same league for the past ten years with pretty much the same ownership involved in the fourteen teams. Scoring rule have not been altered for seven years....

Some of the phone calls I receive simply baffle me.....for example...

I come home last night and notice that I missed a call from one of the league's franchise owners. He's a great owner...very active and owns a resturaunt....therefore, is very generous when it comes to contributing food at our annual auction.

His division is very tight and any one of the seven teams have a shot at the playoffs. With a loss in Week 10, this owner's team is cast into a bloodbath of four teams fighting for the 4th playoff spot.

He calls to ask just HOW did Peyton Manning (QB of the team who just defeated him) score 6 pts.

I explain the scoring based on the scoring rules that have been in place for 7 years...

2 td's.....6pts

328 yds....4pts

2 pt conv...2pts

6 ints.... -6 pts.

Total.....6 pts

That is his point.

He wonders just HOW can a QB who throws 6 ints end up with 6 pts??

I offered the gambit of reasons...

"he overcame"....

"his later performance helped him"

"he would have had 12 pts without those ints"

He rambled on about RB's and 6 fumbles and stuff like that..

...the rambings of an owner seeing his season slip away from him....

I put the ball in his court...

"what would you like to see?"

"how many pts do you think he should have?"

No answer....he just wants me to "take a look a the scoring that penalizes a QB -6 pts for 6 ints....."

Ok..I looked......

...moving on...

...maybe he was drunk.

WHY do we do it?
It pays well.
I gotta commish your league bc I get bubkis. However, there are a few teams that tip me even though they are not the big winners. I put that money right back into the league though

I took over as commish of a league 8 years ago when the former commish ran off with all the league money just before the playoffs started. It's the only superbowl I ever won in this league and it ended up costing me $160. I decided I was the most trustworthy person I knew so I took over and rebuilt and expanded the league. If it wasn't for the internet making it so easy to do I don't think I would have done it.

When I did it for over 10 years myself, I did it because no one else would do it. My entry fee was paid for because of the time comittment of manually tabulating the scores before the age of the internet - not the case any longer. But that is not really why I did it. I did it because it kept me in contact with my buddies from college and let me shoot the breeze with them.Anyhow, sounds like your owner wanted someone to complain to, that is all. We do a weekly Rant page on our website which allows owners to voice their gripes. Its theraputic and comical to those of us on the outside. If he is serious about the points, he should go through the process that your league has of changing the rules (FOR NEXT YEAR). The boat has already sailed on this year. good luck!
