OK SlingBox Guys... (1 Viewer)

Worth the cost? Not worth it?Which one is the best? Which provides best bang for buck? What do you love/hate?Thanks...
Totally worth it. I have the solo, which is the cheapie. It supports only one TV and the best output is S-Video. I am back in school trying to re-boot myself after the banking collapse. So I use it most days. The S-video is fine for me, and the Slingplayer mobile is a great convenience. However, to be fair, I rarely use the Slingbox mobile app, but I do appreciate having it available. The better model has HD output and multiple inputs.I cannot comment on the buck/bang ratio on the HD. But, knowing what I know now, I would have spent the extra money. The downside for me is that if the power goes out at the house, then the slingbox will often lose its settings and I have to re-configure it on the network. I can usually remote in and re-configure the box on the server. But sometimes I have to go through an entire re-install which involves coaching my wife through the setup over the phone. Which is like duct-taping cats to your naked body then running through a working car wash. Obviously, your experience might be different. But based solely on a cost/benefit analysis, Slingbox is a win, IMO.

I also think its worth the hundred bucks or whatever it is.

I have the cheapest and oldest one there is. I use it mostly on my iphone (which they say shouldnt work but it does).

I dont use it a ton but it will be great this Sunday when Im in Hershey park and I can watch the games (or at least part of them before my wife throws the phone away)

I have an unlimited plan so it is great. streaming takes up a ton of data so that might be something to think about

How is this for setup? My brother is moving out of the area and needs to watch the local team and Directv is not an option where he is going, so if he buys one and puts it in my house, will I suffer for it and he can then just watch things on his laptop at his house?

Any monthly charges or just buy the unit and that is that?

I used to use a free software program called Orb that did the same basic stuff, but that was years ago.

I have the SOLO and it works well, but have been wondering if I should have went for the HD model. I'd welcome a better picture but not sure if there is enough bandwith for HD on mobile devices. I'm really only using Sling on iphone or ipad.

FWIW, Netflix streaming has much better quality than Slingbox SOLO on iphone.

It will be as useless as TIVO within a year. Dont bother.
Can you 'splain why?I've been wondering if some new service (through the cable providers, etc) or product might render the Slingbox obsolete soon.
You answered your own question. Only a matter of time before there is an app for it. I have a free fios DVR app on my phone right now that gives me some of the functions. Wont belong before service providers start offering it free of charge (as they did with DVR).

Tivo? I'm not exactly sure how this relates to Tivo. You can own a Tivo for $500 which is the same cost as 3 years of renting a cable DVR. Tivo has youtube, netflix, download recordings to mobile devices/pc's, amazon video on demand, an iPad app, Wishlist Recordings (by title / actor etc), you can easily upgrade storage capacity, etc...Slingbox: Allows top notch streaming of your DVR or cable box over the web. Cable companies will not offer such a service. They want to keep you within the boundaries of your household.

I have the HD Slingbox and I love it. The streaming quality is top notch on both my iPhone and iPad with a WiFi connection. It can get jerky over 3g. I used to have the Directv Sunday Ticket-to-go package which allows you to watch the Sunday games on your phone/laptop, but the streaming quality was horrible. Even in my own house on Wi-Fi it was pretty much unusable. I regularly use the Slingbox to be able to watch a second game on my iPad on Sundays while having a main game on the big TV. I've also used it while traveling and have not been disappointed. One thing I like about it is that the cost is all up front. Once you have the Slingbox and pay for the app you're all set.

I was talking with a Directv rep a month or so ago and he mentioned that Directv is in the process of coming out with their own Slingbox like product. If the quality is anything like the Ticket-to-go I'd pass on it. Also, I'd be surprised if they offered the service for free. Depending on the amount of the monthly charge you still might be better off paying up front and getting the Slingbox.

Actually, the DirecTV iPad app now has streaming, but only like 20 channels are available now.

As mentioned above, DirecTV is already offering streaming of your DVR. My earlier comment regarded the possibility of others doing so as well. Seems like once one of the bigger providers does something, the others all follow suit eventually.

You can stream DirectTV to a computer/TV away from home? Can you share the link? The only one I could locate is...http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/26/directvs-ipad-app-updated-with-live-tv-streaming-as-long-as-yo/

Sorry. Not sure if it's DirecTV or DISH. Buddy of mine does it all the time now on his iPhone & iPad. Looks good.

It's DISH. We recently upgraded to their newest DVR receiver and they installed Slingbox on it as well.http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=922+receiver+dish+network&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=11010416886644077865&sa=X&ei=LpW4Ts3cE8nDsQL9lcHHCA&ved=0CGUQ8wIwBA

Was it just a software installation?

I believe so. I wasn't here for the whole installation when the people from DISH came to install the receiver and slingbox stuff. I believe though it was just software because there's no additional hardware on my PC.

I bought a used PRO-HD, and I can't get this thing to pick up the internet connection.

When I first hooked it up, both the internet and power lights were solid red. But the site said it couldn't locate my Slingbox on the network. I reset the SB and the router; now the internet light is now coming on at all.

Can anyone please help?

Anyone test this internationally? I'm traveling to India for 3 weeks and don't want to miss Sunday football.

Used it in Japan last year to watch the NFL playoffs. Worked great. I have the DISH VIP922 with the built in slingbox. You'll just need a good internet connection.

I've used mine successfully in England, Italy, and Greece. Internet speed will be main issue, but as long as you have a good connection you should be fine.

1sale.com has the SlingBox SOLO for $39. I've been thinking about getting something like this and had been considering the cheapest Volkano product. Any reason not to buy this?
