on the plane ride to Mobile (1 Viewer)

I'm in Mobile, AL for work this week and had an interesting flight down on Monday. Sitting next to me on the plane was Gary Wichard, a sports agent who represents, among others, Darren Sproles. He was talking to a coach (whom I didn't recognize) in the seat in front of me and was saying how AJ Smith was going to have to pay Sproles. The coach said he wasn't sure about that and Wichard said "well then they're going to have to sign a kick returner, a punt returner, a #2 RB..." and then he laughed and said "alright don't get me going, I need to save my game for when it counts." He said the Chargers would pay him, and then I jumped into the conversation with "they didn't pay Turner" to which Wichard replied "that's why they'll have to pay Sproles." Then Wichard spent the entire rest of the flight talking to the guy across the aisle from us, who turned out to be Chester McGlockton.

Ok, so no particular insight here, I just thought it was cool.

I once took a flight and sat next to Larry Wilcox of CHiPs fame (he flies coach). Didn't say a word to him.....just sat there in awe.

I once sat in front of Rick Flair in First Class from Charlotte to Houston. He was loaded and with a blond (not his wife)

"You gotta admit, I am the best thing going...Whooo!" True dat.As far as the Sproles thing goes, he will never live up to the money the Chargers would have to pay to keep him and if they let him walk, Wichard is right in that they would have to replace a couple of positions...kick returners (the average ones at least) are a dime a dozen, but it is harder to find a skilled punt returner and a good RB2.

I once sat two seats back from Ricky Williams on a flight to Austin.

He had just had a huge Monday night game (for the Dolphins, I think) against Washington, with like 35+ carries for nearly 200 yards and was heading to Austin for UT Homecoming on his bye week.

It was a Southwest flight, and they scurried him in at the last minute and put him in the front row (no first class on SW). He had his dreads, but what struck me was how short he was but still totally thick and triangular in shape (shoulders very wide).

He didn't say much and didn't say anything about the Chargers having to keep Sproles.

I once saw Ken Stabler in a bar on Bourbon Street after a Saints game, he was drinking with one of the guys from TBS

this back in the days when TBS had 1/2 season's worth of NFL games and Stabler was a studio analyst..was cool to meet him in a bar..

saw John Saunders ( ESPN host) at the international departure wing of JFK a few days before Christmas, 2007..he ordered 2 pints and double-fisted them :towelwave: all the while looking around to see if anyone recognized him and/or if autograph seekers noticed him..! seemed like he wanted to be left alone.

and once, there was this time, in band camp......

You should have told him that you loved him in Happy Days.

So get this... on my flight back this afternoon, the plane was filled with large ex-football player types. K-State coach Ron Prince sat behind me, some other sports agent was sitting in front of me, and the big guy who sat next to me ended up being a scout currently looking for work. He said he worked for the Steelers from '89 to '99 (and was wearing the AFC Championship ring from '95 to prove it), and then the Saints, and then finally the Jags up til last year. I commented that the Jags were disappointing this year and he replied "that's because they have an ####### for a head coach." I wondered to myself if that opinion had come before or after becoming a looking-for-work scout. I asked if he thought Fred Taylor would be with the team next year and he said "it all depends on that ####### head coach; he doesn't want him there." There were a lot of other guys on the plane, but I couldn't figure out who anybody was. The guy I was sitting with said that the guy across the aisle from us was Larry Lee, who played for the Lions(?).

Anyway, I didn't realize my boring little trip to Mobile, AL would be so interesting. Mods, feel free to put this thread in the Reports of Distinction section...

I met Joe Theismann at a charity event and know and or have met a lot of the Hokie players who have recently joined the NFL (KJ, Rouse, Royal, etc). As someone who only played a limited amount of football in high school, I am always surprised at how small a lot of NFL players are. But I am sure they are 95% muscle.

Twice I was invited into Bart and Cherrie Starr's house in Green Bay, and a couple of times I cas a car-hop for Max McGee and Paul Hornung - served them burgers and root beer at the A & W Rootbeer stand I worked at (Paul drove a red Corvette in about 1963). They were always on their way OUT - I never saw them with cool chicks.

Oh, yea, and Ray Nitschke spoke at our grade-school athletic awards day pancake breakfast.

Truth! But I didn't meant to hi-jack your thread, LOL - "carry on".

WOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Should be interesting to see if they keep LT or Sproles. Sproles looked far more explosive but is far better suited for the role he's in. IMO It's either cut/resign LT, lose Sproles or sign Sproles & get a low cost between the tackles guy & dump LT.

I sat next to the governor of Wyoming on a plane trip once. I had been on a biz trip, and being a Vietnam vet era ex-USAF guy, I had gone to the AF Acadamy game at Colodado Springs the previous Saturday, sort of my adopted alma mater. Bought this pristine white corduroy AFA Falcons cap that day and wore it so it would not get crushed in my luggage... a day where the AFA whooped on Wyoming like 44-6 after the six B1-B's buzzed the stadium at 500 feet right at kick off.

He was in coach, which surprised me, but I peeked at his paperwork. Memos with handwritten "guv" at the top.... asked him if he WAS the governor, and he replied that he was. I apoligized for the ### wuppin, and found this guy to be a real down to eart genteleman. His name was Mike Sullivan.

Sitting next to Pete Sampras in first class once just after his US Open victory was not nearly as interesting an experience compared to Mr Sullivan. Sampras' mother ... geeze, I felt sorry for the kid. She was a doting witch.

They need to pay Sproles and keep him in the role he's been playing with the extra carries he got when LT was hurt. Next they can let LT2 go(get what they can) and quite possible Beanie Wells and Knowshon Moreno will be there for their first round pick. Hate to say it but as much as I've enjoyed LT2 it's probably best for the team to look for another lead back.

Took a few flights with Senator Craig Thomas (WY).....kind of a d-bag IMO. He used to give the flight attendants a hard time. Never met Mike Sullivan, but I met the next Governor Jim Geringer several times and worked with his son briefly. Oh....when I was going to UWYO, I accidentally slammed a door into former Senator Alan Simpson and Sam Donaldson (former ABC news guy with the "nice" hair). I was pretty embarrassed about that.

What does Sproles have to do with his plane ride or what famous people you sat next to?

Yeah, agents have it in their blood to talk a good game, but when it gets down the negotiating we'll really see where the chips fall.

Does the ####### start with an S or a D?Wondering if he's calling him a dummy or a jerk.

I flew up to Minneapolis on a flight with Al McInnis with his kids. I was going up for training. He was going up for a hockey tourney for his kids. I was only up there for like 3 days and he was on the same flight coming back. Some random guy asked him a question about playing in the NHL and that opened the door. Everyone was asking him questions. Nicest guy in the world. Answered every question all while keeping his boys inline and seemed genuinely like he was enjoying just shooting the #### with a bunch of strangers waiting the hour to board the flight....

What nobody else is pointing out is that even Sproles' own agent knows he's a #2 RB.

It started with an a, and s, and an s, and ended in hole.

Yeah, I couldn't remember exactly how he said it. But it was something like a #2 or a change of pace guy or something to that effect.

Not sure if this doesn't beat you all but I once was on a flight to Miami and on my plane in First Class (of course) was OJ Simpson. After the murders but before the theft of his stuff in Vegas. He stood up in First Class and faced the entire plane in coach and stood there with a weird grin on his face while he took off his jacket. Then I could not help but wonder if the flight attendent made sure to take away his silverware.

I've served Wayne Chrebet, Vinny Testaverde, Chad Pennington, Coles and the rest of the gang. When I was working at outback and attending Nassau Community College they'd always be in there. They used to request me because I really don't get star struck... I never asked for autographs for even made it a big deal that they were there and I guess they respected that. Then one day I managed to snag them a "Gold Card" which means you can eat for free all the time in any outback (figured it would be beneficial to me as well, they'd leave a huge tip if they had to pay 0). After they all split up Chrebet still used to come in with his wife and kids and eventually extended an invitation to come eat at his new restaurant that he opened and came and chatted with me and my father and since my father was a major Chrebet fan it was really cool... he was in awe. He even took care of the bill which wasn't cheap with drinks I believe it was like $120.00. Cool dude, always managed to stay grounded.

After you got off, did he walk or fly thru the terminal?

Two years after I introduced my Aussie mates to American football, one of them (who incidentally had done five years of industrial design at university) was at the social security office not too far from where I live, when a 5'10" African-American dude stood next to him, helping out a derelict dude from the street who could barely speak English. My mate got speaking to him, his name was Ricky and he was a pro football player on a world trip*. Absolute gentleman of a human who just wanted to help others out. Being in Australia, nobody had a clue who he was - other than my mate, who knew it was none other than the ex-Texas/New Orleans/Miami star running back.

*Being the operative word.

Joe Theisman is 95% brain. Like that guy, Norman Einstein.
