WASHINGTON - XM Satellite Radio shock jocks Opie and Anthony apologized Friday for airing a homeless man's crude comments that he'd like to have sex with Condoleezza Rice, Laura Bush and Queen Elizabeth.

The remarks were made on their show Wednesday by a guest the duo call Homeless Charlie. As the name of each woman came up, the guest said he would like to have sex with her — using language not fit for print.

Opie and Anthony laughed as they imagined Rice's "horror" while describing a violent sexual encounter in which Rice is punched in the face.

Washington-based XM condemned the remarks.

"We deplore the comments made on Wednesday's 'Opie & Anthony Show,'" XM spokesman Nathaniel Brown told The Associated Press on Friday. He would not say whether XM planned to take disciplinary action.

Opie and Anthony, whose full names are Anthony Cumia and Greg "Opie" Hughes, apologized to listeners on Friday's show.

"We apologize to the public officials for comments that we made on our XM show on May 9th. We take very seriously the responsibility that comes with our creative freedom and regret any offense that this segment has caused," they said.

Because the show airs on satellite radio, there are no federal restrictions on its content. According to XM's Web site, the radio service has parental controls that allow users to block access to channels that frequently contain explicit language. Those channels are designated with an "XL" notation.

The same radio duo was dumped by CBS Radio in August 2002 for running a contest in which they said two listeners had sex in New York's St. Patrick's Cathedral. They were hired by XM in 2004.

The remarks could become an issue as XM seeks approval from the

Federal Communications Commission to merge with New York-based Sirius Satellite Radio, said Tom Taylor, editor of the trade magazine Inside Radio.

"XM and Sirius don't want any regulation," he said in Friday's New York Daily News. "But it's come up in four congressional hearings — and at this point, the merger is such a close call, any issue could become important."

I don't understand the problem.

Why does it matter what they say on XM? I guess if it was during the FREE radio broadcast, then the station could have an issue with the FCC, but why does XM need to comment?

Countdown to "If Stern said the same thing . . ."

Because O&A's comments may be offensive to some of XM's subscribers.

What exactly are they expecting from the program?I still don't get what the big deal is with the comments.

See the great thing about this is there are 200 other channels to pick from. If someone is thin skinned and can't take what is said on an XL channel they should sell thier XM tuner on Ebay and go back to Free censored FM. I happen to like O&A. Sure some of what they do and say is over the top but on Satellite radio who give a ****? They were getting grief for helping out homeless people with the Homeless Shopping Spree saying they were exploiting homeless people. Come on. People are too freaking uptight these days. If they don't like it they can always turn it off.

Awesome, i love seeing free speech molested in such a perverse way.

WHo give a flying fk if they are funny. they can say whatever they want to

Then change the damned channel. I don't see anyone holding a gun to someone's head and threatening to pull the trigger if they don't listen.Celine Dion offends me. Do I ##### and complain and piss and moan to have her taken off the air? No. I change the channel.I'd ban the FCC. Let people say what they want. It's a free country. Offended? Turn it off or change the channel.

They're "Shock-Jocks", this is what they do.

Who ####ing cares?

I don't think Stern is much of a "shock jock" anymore. A few times a week he'll do something a bit out there, but it seems to me they spend 90% of their time riffing on headlines and how fat/how big of a loser Artie is.

Of course, the Richard/Sal bit this week pushed the envelope a bit, I guess.

btw, somebody should report posty for use of the word "asses". surprised he didn't do it himself, actually.

Man these guys suck. They are losing markets left and right, the whole free radio/XM thing has been a huge disaster, and they prove yet again that they will do anything to get some attention.

Maybe they should just call it quits

I think Stern is more in a mode of making good radio than being a constant "shock jock". Interesting how the show has gone from almost 100% emphasis on Howard to now having the emphasis put on Artie, Richard, Sal, Eric the Midget, etc.

Stern never lost a market? They've been back on regular radio for less than 2 years, I think sticking a toetag on them might be a little premature. As someone who's heard both shows recently, there isn't much comparison in terms of humor. :suds:

I enjoy O&A very much.

I agree that Jim Norton, Patrice O'Neil, Joe Rogan, Bob Saget, Bob Kelly and other bring alot to the table.

I was happy to see them move to Free FM and take the place of the failure that was David Lee Roth.

They have done tremendously well in the Free FM markets, and have curved the show to accompany the move.

I agree that the XM side is a bit better, just for the supposed "Freedom of Speech" that they have. Yet, they give a homeless guy a microphone and are now in hot water because they went along with what he said.....

Atleast guys like Sean Hannity are on their side....

And for those of you Stern lovers.....At least O&A do a live show 5 days a week and push the limits of what is "shocking" anymore.

GB the "Baby Bird", The Homeless Shopping Spree, Sandy Kane, Stalker Patti, the ######ed Luverne and Shirley, Pat from Moonachie, the Interns, Than and Sam, Travis, E-Rock, E-Lo, and all the others that make this show fun throughout the week.

I hope they go back to XM for good.

Has Bob Saget licked Jim Norton's balls?
I think it's the other way around....However, Lil Jimmy does have an hour long HBO special coming out soon.
Was Jim in Beer League? I can't remember.
Wasn't thst Artie's movie? I doubt Jim Norton was in that. For all I know, he had that tiny part in Spider Man 1 and that was it.

Stern 4 days a week > OA 5 days a week. OA can continue to try and do "shocking" radio and get in the news, Stern will just do great radio.

if "shocking" means actually having real guests and not having coked up pornstars abd strippers coming in, then yes, O&A are "shocking".Stern is overpaid, old and takes too much time off of the radio to be solely on satellite.

I've said this many times before, but I grew up listening to Stern and his show hasn't been good for years now. Some of his supporting guys are awesome, but he's just not as interesting/engaging as he used to be, and Robin is still intolerable. Big fan of Sal/Artie/Richard/Rev/Yucko/Beetle, etc. though.

O&A's FreeFM show is solid, although IMO it's a far cry from the pre-SexForSam days. XM show is still pretty great, although I think their show works better in the afternoons. I listen to them, but I'm not a diehard by any means. If Stern got funny again, I'd "switch" easily, or just listen to both.

With the restrictions that the FCC places, it is a wonder that the Free FM show is funny at all. And now it seems that the XM show has come under fire for a freedom of speech issue....I am really wondering why I bought XM in the first place now.

I have the Audible subscription. It's cheaper than XM, and my iPod > XM's music. :goodposting:
