O'Sullivan part of QB race (1 Viewer)

Three days of mini-camp did nothing to resolve the 49ers' quarterback question, reports the Mercury News. To the contrary, the practices that wrapped up Sunday served only to strengthen the case of another legitimate contender for the job. J.T. O'Sullivan made such a strong impression that coach Mike Nolan said he would get him some action with the first-team offense when practice resumes next month. "It's a three-man race, not just two," Nolan said. O'Sullivan had a head start over Alex Smith and Shaun Hill during these five practices because he was the only quarterback with experience in coordinator Mike Martz's complex system. Not surprisingly, he looked a step ahead at times when it came to rhythm and timing. O'Sullivan's experience with Martz is part of the reason the 49ers signed him in the first place. "He has an excellent arm, no question about it," Martz said Sunday. "He's very accurate, very quick with the ball. He just needs to play. He needs to develop."

Ain't gonna happen. Smith will be given every chance to prove beyond a doubt what a monstrous failure he is.

JT OSullivan SHOULD look the best in MiniCamps as he is most familiar with the offense. Based on that he will be counted as part of the race for the top spot.

Smith will be given the first chance to fail since he is the #1 overall pick and the most money is riding on him.

Hill looked the best last year and I expect him to start after a few games once Smith shows how bad he is.

All in all week 1 will look like Smith, Hill, JT

after that Hill, Smith, JT

Next year SF has a new starting QB either by draft or big FA signing.....

What's the word on Martz clout right now? I think if it were up to Martz, O Sullivan would be the guy in week 1.

If it were up to Nolan, I think Smith will be the guy since he did draft him.

No way. This is garden variety offseason sunshine. O'Sullivan is clearly the #3 in this two horse race.

Martz, from hearing his spiel over the years, spins much less than your average coach.

And why would it NOT be a open competition? Because Alex Smith and Hill are so much more talented than O Sullivan ... ?

Because SF's management is insanely loyal to its own decisions. I don't see any way short of injury that Alex Smith is not the game 1 starter. My guess for the season is that they start 1-5 or 2-6 or something, fire Nolan, put Martz in as coach, and then maybe you see a change at QB.

Martz heaped a ton of praise on Tatum Bell last year...then he was inactive for most of the season. O'Sullivan is a 3rd string caliber QB on his best day.

Bingo.Like CalBear, I'm a local and understand how the Yorks do things. Martz was brought in to fix Smith. Period. Open competition is the right thing to say to the players and media. You absolutely want to create the illusion of open competition and have everyone believe it (the players especially) so they will strive to be their best and not get complacent thinking something has been handed to them (or to the other guy). But the fact remains that the dollars invested in the #1 overall pick, and last year's injury shortened season, make it too early to quit on Smith from the York standpoint. Smith will start barring injury or a complete disaster of a preseason.O'Sullivan was brought in because Martz wants guys around that already know his system and can help get others up to speed. He has no chance of starting. Martz did this in Detroit too, bringing in former Rams Aveion Cason, Az Hakim, and Arlen Harris when he first came to town. I think Harris and Hakim were cut before the season started. They were there to help get Martz' new system off to a good start in training camp, helping tutor the other players. O'Sullivan will stick with the 49ers, but he'll be a backup no matter the preseason hyperbole we hear between now and September. Don't buy into him starting for a second. Same thing with Hill. This is Smith's job.

I might know the guy, but I'm with you on this. O'Sullivan is really athletic, smart and can pick up offenses quick, but under pressure his decision making is terrible.

THIS IS JT O'SULLIVAN, PEOPLE

JT O'SULLIVAN

JT O'SULLIVAN!!!!

he'll be lucky to ever do anything more than hold a clipboard.
