On the heels of the Patriots overtime win yesterday.

What would have happened if after the Patriots scored the FG they executed an on sides kick and recovered?

Game over or do they get to drive down the field again to kick another FG or TD?

Pretty sure game's over at that point.I was wondering, did the game end as soon as the defender recovered the fumble? Or could he have scored a TD and won the game by 9 in OT? If he had fumbled and the Jets recovered, would the Jets have a fresh first down and be able to continue their drive?

Game over. The rule is that both teams must be given an Opportunity to possess the ball. An onside kick attempt is still a kickoff and therefore the Jets would have the oppotunity to possess. If NE recoverd then game over.

The game is over when the play is over at that point. Once the defender recovers and is touched down that's it. If the defender got up untouched and ran into the endzone the score would count and the game is over.
Or could he have scored a TD and won the game by 9 in OT?
see above

If the defender gains possesion and then fumbles and the Jets recover then they MUST score on the runback or it's game over as the would have used their one possesion on the intital turnover.

Any point spread of +7.5 is safe or would it be +6.5?
Sounds like a 9 point win is still possible.Wondering how long until someone goes onside/pooches the OT KO. If you recover, you have possession in sudden death. If not, you can still hold them to a FG and have a chance to answer.

Good point.and while that 9 point win is possible, just think what kind of a play(s) would have to lead up to it actually happening.

Actually, it would be possible to win by 10 points. If the Pats defender had scored on that play, while the game is "over", they still have to kick an extra point, right? That's what happened at the end of the Packers and Seahawks game.....

Regulation vs OT. No extra points in OT sudden death.

They don't kick PATs in overtime.

Interesting....but they force you to kick one after time has expired in regulation and the game has already been decided?

It's possible buy HIGHLY unlikely. It would most likely have to be fumbled back into the endzone and recovered there. If a defensive player intercepts a pass or recovers a fumble, that player will go down or take a knee to end the game. No way they try to return it for a TD or else their coach will be benching them.

So +9.5 is safe going into o.t. I believe even +13.5 is not safe in college o.t.

Yes, just the way the rules are written. While the W/L has been decided, the game isn't actually over until time has run out and all plays, including untimed plays, have concluded.

If this ever happens there will be an uproar as I don' think that should end the game. Of course, a defender should not do anything except fall on the ball there to end the game, but we all know they aren't in this league for the brains.

I don't see why there would be an uproar. Your possession ended when the defense gained possession. If you happen to get it back, that's a new possession. That's why you start the new possession on first down. Just don't fumble in OT and you'll be OK.
