Otis diet fad of the month thread - Potato mania!!1 (3 Viewers)

So I've been paleo since August, my first cheat day was 3 months in when I reached 40 lbs lost. Now I'm 85-15, still no grain but will have cheese on my protein style double double. Can someone explain to me how I can eat 3200 calories a day without working out a smidge the entire time and be completely freaking ripped? I don't understand but my body loves it.
You've got the metabolism of a 13 year old boy?

By the way, while I still love Denise, my new crush is Darya Pino Rose. Her book is fantastic. She gets all the nutritional science right, as far as I can tell, but focuses more on topics like the psychology of habit changes. I often felt while reading it that it would be perfect for a sizable contingent of the FFA because it's basically diet by food snobbery. Food prepared from fresh, whole ingredients is not only healthier, but it tastes better, and it's what all the cool kids are eating. Processed food? Gauche!
Maurile -- do you think this is the best book to try to get a reluctant but motivated person to rethink their eating habits? I'm looking for something that generally aligns with scientific consensus, is easy to read, and isn't too preachy or condescending. If there's another book that might be better, let me know. Thanks.

Maybe running away from your gambling debts is helping the cause?

Has the Keto Flu set in yet Oats?
Not sure. I felt awful on like day2, feel pretty good since -- a little off maybe, but nothing bad. This is day 5 I think, and I have been uber low carb (and mostly low cal as well) the whole time. Could I have already done it day 2? Or is the worst still to come?

These things interest me.. may give one a shot eventually. GF uses a bodymedia. Nice but kinda bulky. Provides great info though.

I'm just hesitant to dump too much into one if these with every phone manufacturer working to integrate it into the core phone functionality. It's akin to buying a nice Garmin GPS unit at this point unfortunately.

Enjoy the Flex, Kee.

Another cool thing I learned from it -- I'm apparently burning over 3000 calories per day. And I'm not even doing any cardio, and I'm not inputting the resistance training I've been doing, and I am off this week so haven't been doing all the walking I will do in a normal workday. Maybe it's because I'm a taller/bigger than average guy, but I always figured I just did slightly more than the 2k everyone else does. So, nice to know that as I approach my target weight I can scale up top near 3k and still maintain even without regular exercise.

Just another motivator for me. Worth $100 for what I can get out of it until EOL. Syncs wonderfully with MFP, by the way!

Yeah... I think it may overestimate calories burned. It's not like it's actually measuring it. But... it's a good reference point if nothing else.

Low carb is easy Oats. Stay strong. My doctor ordered me to do it right before the new year but not in the "eat bacon and steak every waking second" kind of way that some Atkins people go. Just basically get rid of the processes stuff, no junk food of any kind, and cut out as much bread as possible. So sticking with a variety of meats and a whole ton of fruit and veggies, and I kept potatoes for the most part. If I need a snack now I go with home made popcorn or almonds. Had to significantly cut down on drinking to. But overall, I'm down 20 pounds since Dec 29ish and have another 30 or so to go.

Do you have the test strips??

I didn't realize they were only $100. That's not too bad. I was thinking about the Nike Fuel bands that go for $300 or something stupid.

It can vary. The worst may be over though. It's overblown in general.

Cravings will still be ridiculous for another week. I think maple syrup is the most vile thing on earth but during the first 2 weeks I'd have drank a gallon of it.

It's funny you mention maple syrup. This morning I was making some Eggo waffles with Aunt Jemima syrup for my daughter and at one point I thought I might bite through the food, plate, and a chunk of granite. Lord did it look good.

Had two hard boiled eggs and a cheese stick instead

Yeah. Like Chaos Commish (I think) has said, as long as you're consistent in your bias, I don't think accuracy matters that much. I would imagine that a male over 230lbs would estimate out to near 3,000 calories.

It's probably using the standard BMR equation (and then factoring in activity), which for males is:

BMR = 66 + ( 6.23 x weight in pounds ) + ( 12.7 x height in inches ) - ( 6.8 x age in years )

Yes here's a shot from this morning:

But sure where I'm supposed to be, but based on the limited reading I did, think this means I'm in ketosis? Supposedly the really high end of the range is not good/healthy?

Internet tells me this:

It took me approximately 3 days to get in Ketosis and I am using Ketodiastix. The colour you get does not necessarily has to do with dehydration, nor with how much fat you burn. Remember, the strips test the amount of ketones your body is dumping through urine. I had a very thorough duiscussion with my doctor about this.

Apparently ketosis is like pregnacy. You either are in ketosis or not. The colour of the strip shouldn't worry you (unless there are other conditions related to it) because your body is using fat as fuel whether you get the light pink or deep purple one.

Yeah, you're excreting ketones. This will become obvious to you as your breath begins to smell like a horror movie.

Hi five. That means when you burn cals you are burning stored fat and not just what's in your body in the form of sugar.

Don't #### up this weekend or you have to start over again.

Can we all pray for each other or have a sponsor to call or something? My wife is out of town this weekend and I'm afraid I'm going to either booze or carb it up this weekend. Going to try the masturbation thing - wish me luck.

My friends are cheering for me pretty hard apparently - they trip over themselves to make sure there's something keto-friendly in store for the weekend.

I guess they'd rather be friends with me a long time than go to a middle-age funeral.

Those things are not that accurate. A 6 week food and activity diary plus fitbit can get you in the ballpark of your metabolism.

Keto since December 1, fell out of it during the holidays

Started visiting the gym for cardio after Christmas

Started lifting 4 weeks ago

Weighed in this morning... -40! Bigger success for me is having to pull out old clothes that now fit or having to buy new ones, but a nice round number like that makes me happy.

Still a long journey ahead.

Stayed under 600 calories yesterday, though I had vodka/water for dinner. Wasn't really hungry after I ran 3.5 miles, but I was very thirsty and thought a splash of vodka with my water would be a real treat. I went from the gym to my neighbor's house (the guy who loves to buy the nastiest, cheapest beers he can find for me and encourage me to drink them) and upon entry, was met by him opening up some sort of Schlitz Malt Liquor Ice Lager in a giant can. For the first time in ages, I passed on a free beer. Yes, it was probably made with yak piss and and toilet water, but I turned it down all the same and opted for a vodka/water.

I found my scale last night. It's not very fancy and I think it belonged to my ex-wife, but I got on it. 207. I'll call that an unofficial weigh in because I don't really trust this thing. Still, I'm glad it wasn't 220 or 215. 217 is what I weighed in early January at my doctor's office. That's obese. That's a recipe for early death and now that I'm one of those old guys with a young baby, I need to stick around this planet as best I can.

This weekend will be a challenge. My wife and I are going to the Blazers game Saturday night and we have tickets to the club level which includes an unlimited amount of food with plenty of very good options (carving station, pasta bar, salad bar, appetizers, desserts, Polish dogs, peanuts, pizza, candy....whatever you want). Typically, I oink out. I'd like to avoid that so I'm hoping to come in with a plan. Stick to the meats and the salad bar and avoid the heavy carbs. I'll also try to avoid beer if I can. Full bar means $9 vodkas the size of a thimble, but whatever. I'm driving so I'll limit myself to 2.

Solid week, Otis. Keep it up!

I'm thinking the best option is to pass altogether, but out of curiosity, what would one order here if one were on a low-carb diet?

When I'm in a weight loss phase and know I am about to pig out, I find it useful to do some short sprints before hand.

I know you're not too worried about cals, but I agree with culdeus. The online TDEE calculator that I like the best (matches up very well to my own experience with the bodybugg) shows you'll burn around 2,550 with no exercise. If you have a long walk to the train and do other walking as well, you're probably burning another 100 - 150.

Glad to see you made it to day 5, I only lasted 3 and had to throw in the towel.

Cabbage Chicken Salad, I'd guess... careful of the dressing

I've had success in getting Vietnamese places to add additional beansprouts instead of the rice noodles for Pho.

How about I go 1980's basketball shorts, head band and attempt to streak across the Rose Garden floor?

I'd get any of the grilled rice/noodle bowls without the rice or noodles and then order a side of the broth of your choice ($2 cup).

See if they'll just a throw a bunch of veggies in your bowl (and give your spring roll to a co-worker).

Garlic Glazed Pork Loin with Mixed Greens, although "glaze" makes me pause.

Virtually no carbs (1 net carb per ounce). Calorically dense, but nothing to really worry about if you're watching carbs (they're disfavored for other reasons in other plans).

Asian food is really tough on low carb diet unless you're making it yourself.

Soy Sauce is generally a-ok (as well as sesame oil). You can make something good at home with those items. Anything from most of these places is loaded with just that "glazes" which is flavored sugar paste in most situations.

Loaded with corn starch typically.

Someone (bender?) was talking about using a large shredder on cauliflower to make simulated rice?

Mashed cauliflower with butter makes for an excellent mashed potato substitute.

I still lost a ton doing Atkins in my early 20s eating Chicken and Broccoli (no rice) and egg drop soup several times a week. I'm sure it was a lot carbier than I thought, but still a huge step down. And most places will give you any sauce on the side.

Thanks GB, you too. Don't eff it up at the big event. Seriously.

My next challenges come tonight and next weekend. Tonight is pretty easy -- wife turned 30 today, and with the new baby we can't go out and get lit up, so we're ordering in sushi (I get like ten pieces of salmon sashimi and start with some edamame -- all protein) and having some good red wine. The wine is the tricky part.

I read online that wine doesn't have carbs in it. Is that right? Supposedly the downside with any alcohol, even scotch, is that your body turns to the alcohol to burn before continuing to burn fat. Still though, if my body burns a drink an hour, I'm fine with a couple hour pause on the ketosis magic. But supposedly scotch won't screw up the ketosis state (seems right to me, as I've had a scotch each night this week and still am there). I wonder if red wine is similarly safe. Anyone know? If not safe, I don't want to ef up my progress, so I guess I'll stick with scotch again.

Next weekend dad in law comes to town for a night. Guy loves beer. I suspect we'll have to drink some beer together. We'll see -- maybe I can sub in scotch for that one.

I go back to a regular work week Monday (provided the snow doesn't get in the way), so that will be my first time eating out of the house on atkins. Shouldn't be bad I don't think -- there's a salad place in my building and some other healthy options nearby, so I think I can make it work.

The real big question for me -- what are easy, safe snacks? I've got beef jerky. I know about pork rinds. Soy crisps I'm told are Ok. Anything else? I suppose a handful of almonds is relatively low carb.

I just hammered two bunless cheeseburgers and they tasted like heaven.

Mmmmm
My wife made these for the super bowl. They weren't bad. I think we used greek yogurt or something in place of blue cheese. Not bad.

The real big question for me -- what are easy, safe snacks? I've got beef jerky. I know about pork rinds. Soy crisps I'm told are Ok. Anything else? I suppose a handful of almonds is relatively low carb.
Dry wine has less sugar (3-4g carbs)...sweet wines have more sugar (7-8g carbs) (Captain, obvious here, I know).

Snacks I liked:

Celery w/ PB2 spread

Celery dipped in hot sauce

Cucumber chips w/ vinegar/salt

Jerky (limited...check label. Some has a ton).

sunflower seeds

Sugar free jello

Cheese sticks

Lettuce roll ups with buffalo shredded chicken (crock pot chicken breast + butter + Franks)

Lunch meat Roll-up dipped in mustard (mustard is your savior for providing flavor without carbs).

Dill Pickles
