My BIL was just over on Saturday while we were working on a car and we had one run out. He stepped on it with his boot and crushed it. Then with his toe smashed his head. It was gross.

His 2 year old daughter was watching and didn't bat an eye.

unsure

 Don't check his crawl space.

if you caught one that quickly, there are probably many more, sorry gb. or mice in NY are dumb.
Shtick?
Mice live in a family of 5-6; if you saw one you most assuredly have others.
fml
If you really want to stop this you will have to go to a multilevel plan of killing the existing and preventing more from coming in; interested?
wtf seriously? This sounds like a huge commitment. They really weren't bothering us too much I suppose...

Not cash wise but time wise. The mice will get into your attic, nest in your insulation and soak it with urine which will give it that old house odor, plus ruin all the stuff you have stored up there in cardboard boxes and bags. Exterminators work really well in this area but will bleed you forever as they will not solve the problem; they are part of the solution. Should I continue?

so i am considering putting in a raised, curved block walled garden using something like these blocks

it's in a corner of the yard and i want to make it 2 tiered, with 2 queen palms in the bottom tier at either edge and a banana tree in the top tier in the center. maybe a total of 5 blocks "high". 2 or 3 on the bottom and 2 on the upper tier. the 3 trees are currently pretty small, the palms are about 4 feet tall and the banana tree is about 3.5 feet tall.

one thing i'll have to deal with is the sprinkler that resides in that corner. cap it? extend it up through the dirt so it feeds the new bed?

thoughts?

I have a3 block wall with those exact bricks. Depending on the sprinkler, id probably just cap it

how many total trees do you have?
Good question. I'll step outside and get a count now... Holy crap. It's somewhere between 30-40 or so. It's dark out now so hard to confirm. The ones around the side and back are typically the oldest and biggest. Up front and scattered in between we have lots of smaller, thinner, younger ones. No wonder the place is completely covered in shade and has weeds and little grass. I think I may go nuts this weekend and take down as many of the small ones as we can. It looks like we've got a good 12 or more trees that fit within the "under 20 inches circumference" restriction. Will my neighbors hate me for killing all these nature/trees or love me for cleaning up the look of the property? I'm hoping the latter, but who knows. None of the ones I'm looking to cut down are big enough to impact anyone else's property really anyway.

After 3 years in the burbs I feel like a grizzled vet already. Love it. Can't understand folks with families wanting to live in the city. And my new town and house are eons nicer than the old one, which means even more civilized living.

- Driving a car is great. My car door is about 5 steps from the house side door. I'm not walking to any stores from this place, and boy do I love it.

- Everything is nice, and clean, and manicured. Little kids play soccer in the fields. My older daughter plays on the playground. This place looks like a Frost poem.

- Neighbors who aren't out to jack my cell phone? +100 awesomepoints

- Working on house projects is fun. There's no fun in working on apartment projects.

- Look at all this space! I can put all my crap away and there's still room in case I get more crap.

- I actually have a room that is a dedicated office. Good luck finding that in the city.

- My commute sucks, but it really doesn't. It's an hour door to door. And it's a civilized hour. I have a 4 minute walk to the train station. I get a seat. I do some reading and some FFA, and then before you know it I'm at work. At night I head down to Penn station -- admittedly the worst part of my commute because it's an awful place, but then again Penn station is entirely the CITY's fault, not the suburbs' -- and I grab a beer or a double scotch rocks, grab a seat, and unwind with some quiet time and music. Then I'm home.

- An extra 4% NYC income tax to live in the city? NO THANK YOU.

- Yes, property taxes are higher, but I'm also not confronted with the Hobson's choice of either sending my kid to a gang-riddled inner city deathtrap or paying $50k a year in kindergarten tuition for a NYC private school.

The Burbs: Awesome.*

*Specifically for married guys with kids. If you're young and single, the city is where it's at, brah.
