P Ben Sheets signs with A's (1 Viewer)

$10m + incentives is a bit much for a guy who missed an entire yr IMO
Especially for a team with limited financial resources. Apparently he was really impressive at a bullpen session in front of a bunch of people a bit ago. It's hard to doubt Beane, but I'm not unhappy the Mariners didn't get him at this price. I'd much rather have Bedard at $3m, despite the fact that he's not healthy to start the season. The AL West is shaping up to be pretty damn competitive this year - there's been quite the influx of pitching. Lee, Harden, Sheets, Duscherer are all added off the top of my head, and Lackey's the only pitcher worth much that's left. With Anaheim taking a step back and the M's/Rangers/Oakland improving, this could be anybody's division.I do think Oakland is a bit behind the other three currently, but they're a lot closer now that they've added Sheets. If they get Damon too, it's pretty much a four horse race depending on who gets lucky with health/breakouts.

$10M is more than I thought Sheets would get but it's not a terrible risk for the A's considering how low the rest of their payroll is. As mentioned earlier, if Sheets performs but the A's suck, he can be dealt for a prospect.

Re: Sheets vs. Bedard. Sheets was healthy enough to pitch a simulated game for scouts. Bedard's readiness is a bigger question mark. It's possible he won't be fit until June or July.

The A's had set aside a lot of money for Chapman. When he signed with the Reds the A's simply took that cash and used it on Sheets. If he pans out he could spearhead a run at the division. If the A's suck Beane will pawn him off for some prospects.

This seems like a win/win imo. I thought Oakland should have done this with Adam Dunn last year.

Not quite a win/win. If he re-injures himself before being traded, the A's are out his salary and they won't get any prospects. Worth the risk IMO.

Absolutely correct. Which is why Sheets just signed for $10m+, and Bedard's a whole lot cheaper, despite the fact that he's been a better pitcher when healthy in recent years.Bedard = more risk, more reward. I'm completely ok with that. I think the Mariners taking a flyer on a guy who could give them a better top 3 than any staff in history I can think of for a relatively small amount is a very smart gamble. I sure wouldn't want to have to beat Felix/Lee/Bedard more times than they beat me in a playoff series.

That is a sick threesome in that home ballpark. Bedard is a top 3 K artist in the league when he is healthy.

Good lord wouldn't it be sick to watch the M's in the playoffs with those 3 healthy. One can only dream.

Did Bedard sign with the M's or something?
He hasn't signed with anyone yet, but they would have the best shot at him unless someone throws stupid money at a guy who hasn't pitched much in the last few years
