Packers Annual Family Night (1 Viewer)

A few early notes from a soldout Lambeau:

Driver is fine-no worries. 2 or 3 nice catches in the first drive including the first TD.

Jennings has about 4 catches so far and looks like the same cat we all fell in love with at this time last year.

BJackson had a great catch that got them down to the goal line and then punched it in 2 plays later-got stuffed once.

Brett was Brett-I don't think he had a single incomplete pass in that first impressive drive. Granted, it's only practice, but Brett, Driver and Jennings looked good....damn good!

Clowney had a kick return for a TD and while there's on tackling on special teams, he definitely showed off some speed.

Bubba Franks is out with a scratched eye..doesn't sound too serious.

Rodgers has struggled thus far against the first team D, but this Packers D is all over them and quite frankly the Packers depth on O is not good. Buzz around A Rod has been real good this summer.

James Jones has been the talk of camp. Has two catches. Don't let the buzz fool you into thinking he has a chance of beating Jennings-no chance-but he could finally send Ferguson packing. Should be a nice battle with Jones, Ferguson and R. Martin.

As I type this, Rodgers has 'em on the move, but the drive is stalled and settles for a fg.

Al Harris and C Woodson are sitting out (healthy). Keep that in mind with regards to the performances of 4, 80 and 85.

I'll keep you posted if anything else happens..but usually these things get meaningless in a hurry!

Did you get a chance to check out Jackson's pass blocking? Was he in the game on obvious passing downs?
I'm watching it live on tv now. Honestly, I'm just watching the ball more than focusing on individuals too much. Jackson hasn't done anything running, but had a real nice catch near the stripe and finally punched it in. They're doing a 2 minute drill with 1st team O now and Herron is running with the 1's and looking pretty good. Brett had 'em driving again in the 2 min, but was picked in the ez by Nick Collins.

A Rod is working with BJax with the 2's in the 2 minute drill. Another big screen pass to BJax. He probably could've taken it all the way but lost his balance and went down. He definitely doesn't have much in the way of breakaway speed..in what little I've seen. Still hasn't done anything running the ball.

R. Martin drops a TD and is called for offensive pass int. Perfect pass by ARod in the back of the endzone.

A Rod has thrown to C. Holliday 3 times this drive...and is picked off on a desparation toss at the end of the half.

Down to the 3 and 4's already with Ingle Martin, Paul Thompson and a lot of guys I've never heard of.

D. Wynn looks big, slow and the commentators have already mentioned that he's had issues with conditioning. He's nothing special.

Herron was the only back that has done anything running. Not good!

Shaun Bodiford has 3 or 4 targets this drive and some nice returns. Should be a good battle at wr.

Paul Thompson (Oklahoma) has some nice mobility, but the quality of overall play has dropped several levels since the 1's and 2's left the game.

On an incomplete to Clowney, both announcers commented that Clowney has not looked very good thus far in camp.

Ingle Martin with a pick in the 2 min drill. I believe that means Favre, Rodgers and Martin all killed their 2 min drives with ints.

The INT looked almost intentional as Rodgers looked very PO'd because of the penalties.1st string offense looked good as did the defense.Herron was in during the two minute offense with the 1st unit. Take it for what it's worth. Looks like Herron (right now anyway) will be the 3rd down back.Clowney returned a kickoff for a TD, but there was no tackling so not sure if he would have still gotten it, but it looked like he was clear.Collins intercepted Favre when he hid behind a moving LB when Favre was targeting Driver.Jennings was open all day.James Jones made some catches. Hasn't done as much as expected yet.Jackson looked good running the ball. Seemed to pickup at least 4-5 yards every time he ran. Only times he didn't was one stuff and the goalline stuff.Harrell knocked down a screen pass.Cullen Jenkins had a sack from the DT position.Abdul Hodge put a huge hit on either White or Wynn, not sure which one but there was a definite pop in the tackle.I'll post more later.Buy Jennings folks... he is getting as many targets as Driver and catches everything!

Curious...we have two seperate "eye witness" accounts of Brandon Jackson...

"Jackson hasn't done anything running, but had a real nice catch near the stripe and finally punched it in".

"Jackson looked good running the ball. Seemed to pickup at least 4-5 yards every time he ran".

Oh well...beauty is in the eyes of the beholder

He had a few average 3-4 yard runs and a great catch for about 25-30 yards vs. a linebacker (Hawk? Barnett?). There were not huge holes for him running against the GB first string defense.

Now to the ever-exciting kicking battle between Rayner and the rookie Crosby.

Interesting to note that R. Martin is one of the two holders. Certainly won't hurt his cause to make the roster.

As silly as kickers are, this is a neat little competition with a sold out Lambeau giving them a gameday feel. 5 kicks each at different lengths and then switch sides for 5 more.

It's over. No injuries. The D's gonna be good, but they did nothing to answer the questions in the running game. A full season of Favre, Driver and Jennings could be special...but can they all stay healthy?

Stats may prove me wrong, but I didn't see anything in the running game that I would classify as impressive. Jackson does seem to have a good grasp for the screen game, though, so hopefully they can focus the majority of camp on getting the ground game up to speed. I agree with the "buy Jennings" comment. I think he really left a bad taste in peoples mouth with the way he finished last season-even if it was injury-related. Dude's for real. It's just one scrimmage, but don't sleep on the Pack, they'll be better than the experts think.

I may have been mistaken. I'm a little doped up on codeine tonight. Sucks getting sick in the middle of summer.

They like Jones as the slot receiver. He can get separation in close and he goes after the ball. A nice #3 WR and replacement if Jennings or Driver get hurt.

Thats the way I see it. Hopefully he can boost Favre's 3rd down efficiency and TDs.

Running Back:

Jackson looked better at catching passes in the scrimmage than in practices.

B.J. Pope injured a knee - possibly serious - no word yet

with Mornency out and now Pope the Packers are starting to run low on RBs.

N. Herron is looking good as a 3rd down back.

One thing I noticed about Jackson on a couple of plays is that he didn't improvise when the opportunity presented itself. There was one run in particular where big yardage (1v1 w/ a LB) awaited him if he cut out of his assigned hole and bounced the run outside, but instead it looked like he had blinders on and just rammed it into the designed spot. He still got 4 yards but IMO he could've made much more out of the play by breaking out of the play design and going outside.

But... it's just a light contact scrimmage to get the fans amped up about the offense, so I take nothing meaningful away from this other than Jackson made a really nice catch around a defender.

Sometimes players are told in no uncertain terms to run exactly what was called for. It's possible he was doing exactly what he was told. Sometimes rookies take a conservative approach early in camp in order to avoid over playing. Not sure I would get too concerned yet, But if the 4th exibition game rolls around and this is still happenening then I would see that as a potential problem.

Disclaimer: Jackson owner. If I'm thinking of the right run, he turns it inside and slithers into a space where it looks like there's absolutely nothing and gets through the line for about four yards. I really liked his vision on that run -- his recognition that holes in the NFL aren't going to be canyons and his willingness/ability to get into a tight space.

I remember that play. That was a very huge hole. Unfortunately for all us FBGs, all RBs do this now and then. Hopefully, this isn't a pattern to Jackson's play. I still think he looked pretty good for his first live action. Can't wait til next week to see him vs Pittsburghs D.

watching the game now and I like what I see out of Bjax.
Can you be a bit more specific? What have you liked?
He was running hard and looked very decisive. He caught the ball good and he looked good in pass protection as well. He had 2 goal line carries and he got stuffed once and then looked very powerful on the 2nd try. He didn't look extremely fast but looked fluid and looked very comfortable in the offense and with his teammates. He looked like he belonged with the team and itlooked like he had a good relationship with Favre as well.

Thanks! How did Noah Herron look?

Herron actually looked better in my opinion. He had great cuts and caught a couple of passes. He also looked like he was blocking good as well. From a talent standpoint I don't think Herron is in the same category as Morency or Bjax but he just seems to me like a player who tries really hard and coaches would love. I could see him being used on 3rd downs more during the season.

So what has become of Abdul Hodge?! The Rookie Bishop looks like the real deal. Any scoop from the homers?
A lot of the talk is that his knees are so banged up that he won't make the team... the local beat writers are making it seem the packers are very comfortable with Bishop as the backup, so whether they decide to cut him or not is anyone's guess, but I wouldn't be banking on him as the LB of the future....
