Big sleeper defense!

Take a note of the players they have signed. No big name but everyone of top knotch tacklers. The defense ranked fairly high last year but gave up a lot of big plays. The focus this year will be on tackling, as it should be. Add in a top knotch linebacker or two and they are going to be a defense to reckson with. Doubt they will get Mario Williams but I'd rather have Hawk or Greenway anyway.

The second key to a good defense is keeping them off the field. Even with the injuries the offense was able to move the ball against the competition last year. This year it will be West Coast Offense with the Denver "One Cut - Cut Block" running game which should do very well and keep the defense rested.

Yes, Favre is coming back.

Yes, Javon will play this year under the current contract.

It was supposed to be that last year too. The thing about that system is you have to have guards and centers who dont SUCK to run it. GB has lost both guards and their center over the past 2 years. Its going to be ugly. And yes, before you ask, Grey Reugamer should not be an NFL starter.

==================I aggree that it really sucks they lost the two guards last year and the center this year.

On the positive side the line played much better at the end of the year and the new offensive coach comes from a very successful background (Denver & Atlanta). Great teams have great assistant coaches. I'm not thrilled with the new head coach but I do like the staff he has put together.

To make the playoffs and win the Superbowl you have to have an offensive line that can dominate in the 2nd half. I hope the new scheme fits the speed, weight, and abilities of the current offensive line. Otherwise, it going to be a very tough year. Keep your fingers crossed!

No it wasn't. Where are you getting that idea?

Green Bay defense against the run was one of the best last year. Not sure if that was more so the scheduleing, teams passed so easy against them they didn't have to run, or it really was that good. Linebacker play was terrible. I saw so many misssed tackles! Against the pass it was just average at best. Regardless it looks like Green Bay has put themselve in position to be an awesome Defense this year. A.J Hawk with that 5th pick is what they really need! If they get a feared defense that can shut down offenses, Favre can win enough games to make Packer fans happy again even if he's forced to play with spare parts again!

Actually its the other way around. They were good against the pass and bad against the run.

Good up the middle against the run...terrible on the outside....partially due to KGB always crashing the inside and leaving any outside cutbacks wide open...and the LBs doing about the same thing.

Couple of thoughts. First of all, Jeff Jagodzinski worked under Alex Gibbs' tutelage. He says that Gibbs is very protective of his training techniques and such and won't allow his practices to be taped or used as training footage for anybody but a select few. Basically Jags went on to say that it's basically going to be Denver, Atlanta, and Green Bay that have his techniques down. It has been working out splendidly for Atlanta and Denver so far....

Secondly, the Packers made little to no effort to resign Flanagan. Scott Well filled in OK for him last season. Grey Reugamer is no longer with the team. With more emphasis on zone blocking this year, the coaches seem to think the Whitticker can improve. Also, Ahman Green has some experience behind a zone blocking scheme as that's allegedly what Tom Osbourne ran at Nebraska. The Packers are in dire need of interior offensive lineman. I think it's almost a certainty that they select one on the first day of the draft. Look for Thompson to trade back to acquire more picks often.

?? Where do I start? This defense was 25th last year, 14th against the run and 25th against the pass. The so far have signed who...... FS Marquand Manuel, NT Ryan Pickett and LB Tracy White. Yes they all will help but this defense is still far away from being good or even sleeper material. Then you want us to believe that they MIGHT add 1-2 more LB'ers so why are you praising White's signing when if they add two more LBers with Barnett who's going to sit? Then you want us to believe that the offense automatically will be better because of a new system of which you have question marks at QB and along the OL. The Packers have to address the OL on Day 1. Favre should have retired two years ago and all he's doing ir ruining it for management because they have to wait for a decision on his status. Also you assume both Favre and Walker will be back. Ahh is that supposed to be a good thing? You also lost your kicker Longwell so yet another hole needs to be looked at. The biggest kicker of it all is that the division is stronger. Chicago upgraded the QB spot and Detroit and Minnesota have added a lot of new people and personnel. To me the Packers should still finish in the basement of the division, so no I don't think that this defense will be any good at all.

Chicago has the same QB...and Griese is not much of an upgrade, if any....Detroit has added little to nothing besides getting rid of Harrington for decent QBs...but nothing great. Minny spent alot...but also lost their offense over the last 2 years.

I disagree that the Packers have to address OL day 1. Tackles are set...Whitticker was a rookie last year and was bad at times...very bad...but also showed promise. Barry being resigned and there is talk of him attempting to lose a little weight and make the shift to guard. Wells will be the center. Besides that there are two more young guys they think very highly of (Coston and White) but not sure when they can make the jump to starting status.

Chicago went with a rookie QB last year. This year he'll be #3. Greise is an upgrade for sure. Vikings played better after Dante was gone. Detroit won't be a laughing stock anymore where they had no structure leadership from the coaching staff. They've added a good coaching staff and a huge upgrade at QB. Packers will still finish at the bottom.

This defense was 25th last year, 14th against the run and 25th against the pass. ?????????????

I swear they were in top 10 one or the other!!! Maybe even top 5 late in season They must have really flopped last week or two!

They were 27th best fantasy defense in a league I just went and looked.

No where to go but up I would think!

Griese is not even the starter yet...and not much of an upgrade...there is a reason this is his 3rd NFL team.Vikings may have played better...but Brad Johnson is how old now? RB mess with Taylor and the host of others who nobody seems to stand out. They got Hutch, Birk possibly back but his health is a question mark. Lost Burleson...their other WRs are forgettable for now (Williamson could step up).

Detroit...eh...I will believe it when I see it. While their QB play could not get worse...their Oline is as bad as Green Bay's. And good coaching staff? Perhaps...hard to tell if the HC is good considering he has not been in that position before. Martz...meh...

Packers may finish at the bottom...but I do not think the division has upgraded all that much.

In yards against they were good...points against not so good.Overall they were 20th in points agaisnt 7th in yards against.

Run/Pass

Rushing - 23rd in yards per game against...7th in rushing TDs against...

Passing - 1st in yards against... 22nd in passing TDs against...

Passing - 1st in yards against

there we go!

I guess there is 200 different ways and angles to break down defense ranks but I thought they were number one somewhere!

:goodposting: Right on. The Monday nighter against MIN was a perfect example. They just kept running right at KGB, picking up 5-10 yards a pop. Horrible.

As for the defense in general, I am optomistic that TT will find a CB to start opposite Harris, moving Caroll to the slot, where he should have been anyway.

I think Bates leaving as the DC, will end up having more of a negative impact on the Packer D, than any rookie or FA signning will be able to off-set.

Finding a DE to play the running downs and get KGB out of there and only used as a pass rusher would help a lot.

Id be fine if we could do two things.A. Accurately predict when they will run.

B. Renogitiate KGB's deal as that is a hell of a lot of money to pay a guy who will not play a ton of downs.

I was thinking about this as well. The thing is, you can't cut him, because then you'd be paying him to play for another team. I doubt he'd renegotiate. So, it makes the most sense to pay him to rush the QB on obvious passing downs. You're gonna have to pay him, might as well use him the best way possible, salary be damned.

Why is that funny? What does last years pre season speculation by posters on a FF message board, have to do with anything this year?Proof is in the pudding. Bates took a sub par D & got far more out of them than most experts projected.

Your faith in Bob Sanders is commendable, but bear in mind that last year, he was the Packers DE's Coach, which just so happened to be a major weak link in Green Bay's Run D. Not saying it's all Sander's fault, just something to keep in the back of your mind.

Now he does have a pretty good resume, so all may be well.

Personally, I just like a DC with the proven track record and who all the Packers Defensive players liked and played hard for ~ vs. ~ a DC without that track record.

That's the way I see it. That is why he got paid in the first place, because he can rush the passer. It is a lot, but if it makes him better to rest on some running downs and be used as a pass rusher only I'm all for it.

What is funny is the changing of the tunes...how he could not make that much of an impact in coming to Green Bay...but now that he is leaving that it will make a huge impact.Bates would not have stayed as the DC...or he would be there now.

And if that was Sander's only experience...I may be worried...but KGB was a weakness, Kampman was certainly not...but he also has a ton of experience...8 years in the NFL I believe and 22 before that in the college ranks.

Two words: Ahmad Carroll
Three words: Should be cut.
Nah....he looked somewhat better last year...definately cut down on the penalties and did well in ther return game. While I would not mind someone else coming in and pushing him to nickel back...certainly should not be cut.

No I meant exactly what I said. The weak link in the Packers Run D last year was the play of their Defensive Ends, which is the position that Sanders Coached and you need to keep that in mind. But you editied out that part of my post.
Disagree somewhat...the weak link was a combo KGB and the LBs...not just the Defensive Ends...

It was a joke. Sarcasm, catch it.
Sorry, I missed it. :bag: This is a good smiley to use :sarcasm: , as the intnet of sarcasm does not always translate well.
Oh I see, you need it spelled out for you... ;) (sorry)

Not sure this helps your argument much. While Sanders main duty was as the DE's Coach, he also had input with the Coaching of the LB's too.

And there is a reason Barnett is the only starter left on the team.Lenon and Diggs simply were not cutting it...two others were injurred.

Not all of the problems are coaching issues.

And as I said...if this was the only experience the guy had...I might be worried. But I do not judge him based solely on that...just like I do not judge McCarthy based solely on last year with San Fran. You have to look at the body of work...in addition to what he had to work with.

The latest information - looks like Carroll might be relegated to dime and nickle packages....Packers | Team will visit with Woodson

Jason Wilde, of the Wisconsin State Journal, reports the Green Bay Packers are serious about their interest in free agent CB Charles Woodson (Raiders), who is expected to visit Green Bay after the NFL meetings wrap up Wednesday, March 29. "If we're talking to him, we're serious," head coach Mike McCarthy said. Woodson would likely play cornerback for the Packers, who need to upgrade the corner spot opposite CB Al Harris.

Exactly what I was thinking. Not ready to cut the guy...as he can be valueable and can improve (he has a whole 2 years under his belt).

I think too many people are very impatient these days with players...1 or 2 years and they are ready to drop a guy...how many players excel in their first 2 years? And this is not just about Carrol...but fans of all teams do this...
