Scout.com is reporting that the Packers have offered a first-round pick and a fourth-round pick to the Chiefs for running back Larry Johnson.

If true, the report is a stunner. Packers G.M. Ted Thompson doesn't like to pay big money to strangers to the team, and it's going to take really big money to keep Johnson beyond 2007, the last year of his rookie deal.

And if an offer that big has been made to the Chiefs for Johnson's rights, the Packers surely have reached a tentative agreement with Johnson's agent on a long-term deal. Otherwise, the Packers would be picking up Johnson for only one season before having to either use the franchise tag or let him walk away.

I don't think many would argue that it would be a hit, due mostly to a reduced workload (which is where his true value lies) and the fact that the offense wouldn't be built solely around him.That being said, I'd be shocked if this were true.

well they wont have a choice next year, and if KC is the only team that will meet AJ Smiths high demands I could see it happening. I dont see KC as much of a threat to challenge for the division even with Turner

well they wont have a choice next year, and if KC is the only team that will meet AJ Smiths high demands I could see it happening. I dont see KC as much of a threat to challenge for the division even with Turner

the only way it would happen is if they gave up their 1st and 3rd which would be more than what they are getting for LJ and although it would save them some $ it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Signing him next year as a UFA (if he isn't traded) is a definite possibility but there's a lot of time between now and then.

Not sure how you figure that. As LJ would more than likely get most of the TDs inside the 5.

From the replies, it sounds like this is a deal that may work for both teams.

I would like to see it be a 1 and a 3, if only because I see LJ as having equal value to Turner, but the difference is probably not enough for me, if I were Carl Peterson, to turn this down.

Packers do not need to sign him to a contract.Why not just let him play out his final year. Take your last shot with Favre. If you want to keep him, franchise him. Or sign him to a new deal next year. You could still trade him next year if you wanted.I don't see a lot of risk for the Packers if they really do want to make a run at the SB.

Thompson has barely spent any money the past two years. The Packers can afford LJ and it remains to be seen what his actual contract is. Slap the franchise tag on him after this season and see what happens from there.

Would be a great move for the Pack. O-line is young and talented, LJ would be a good fit in the zone blocking system and Favre's at his best when he has a strong running game. When Ahman Green was dominating games and the O-line was one of the best in the league they were 4th and 26 away from the NFC Championship Game. Favre's been gunslinging over the past few years because he has to, not because it's a formula for long-term success.

TT is a smart guy. He's sat on his cap room and been patient so that he can possibly make moves like this. I'd be suprised if they were to bring in Moss if they acquired LJ, but they did win the Super Bowl with a base of drafted talent, a handful of solid FA signings and a couple off the wall personalities (Andre Rison).

If the Packers want to keep him long-term - and I sure hope they would want to - he isn't going anywhere. You slap the franchise tag on him and go from there. At the very worst you trade him after one season and recoup some of the value you traded to acquire him. None of that is taking into account the potential value he could have on the Packers' season in 2007.

Sure lots of times. They nailed the Moss to Oakland deal a month before it happend. Since then they have been getting a lot better. People who continuely slam them are wrong to do so in my opinion.
