Palmer talks about the knee (1 Viewer)

The video is very impressive, and it would be good for the NFL -- and obviously the Bengals -- to have Carson back for the start of the season.

But temper your enthusiasm by remembering that there's a huge difference between controlled drills and actual game conditions when 11 large, strong and ill-tempered men are focused on hitting you as hard as they can. Jerry Rice returned from a torn ACL and MCL in 1997 after 4 months of rehab to play in Week 16 or 17 after injuring his knee in Week 1. In his first game back, his kneecap shattered on impact with the ground. Specualation is that the joint wasn't ready for the stress put on it due to the trauma of the injury and rehabilitation.

Medical science continues to progress, but the human body still has limitations. And the wear and tear of the NFL on QBs is already substantial, let alone when the QB in question starts out with a seriously injured knee.

Finally, from the FF perspective, there's a lot more to it than just will he start in Week 1? Will he stay healthy all season? What level of production will he achieve compared with the 2005 numbers in Cincinnati? Will the coaching staff emphasize the run more, especially early in the season? No one knows for sure.

On the other hand, there's risk at every position, and this is an opportunity to get a top 5 QB at least one or two rounds later than normal. For me (in redraft leagues), it will be a question of when to draft Palmer. At what point is the risk worth the reward and worth the opportunity cost of drafting someone else with theoretically lower risk.

Good postI gotta repeat something and I wish folks would remember this. Carson has played with a knee brace and is comfortable playing in it. Anyone and everyone that tears their knee is comfy with a brace far earlier than they're comfortable without it.

Carson's opinion doesn't matter so much. They got Wright to play 1-4 games in September. They should be good enough to win without him and there's just very little rush to get him back. Their biggest concern seems to be the future and IMO that's the right frame of mind for them to have.

OK. I know that we have to temper our enthusiasm but wow that looked really good. Of course I have nothing to compare it to because you don't usually get video on guys rehabbing. But he did look good. I can't believe he's come that far. And he sounds like he's mentally strong as well. His attitude is really good.

The odds certainly look better for him now then they did 1-2 weeks ago. What do you think Barracuda?

I agree with your assessment. As a Palmer owner, I'm encouraged and it's another step in the right direction. Palmer seemed to be able to make fast lateral cuts as part of those drilled, which is a good sign. But, I think you're right that we need to keep things in perspective and not get too excited because he could have a setback. But watching that video, makes more me optimistic that he can come back eventually.Good stuff for Palmer owners and Bengal fans everywhere!

Everything Ive heard from bengal ville is that Palmer is good to go to start the season !
Thanks gocats. What specifically are you hearing? I know Chad Johnson is talking it up but nobody listens to him seriously.

I keep hearing them speak very cautiously. As Ken Broo says in the video, "Palmer isn't about to make any promises for opening day". And then Palmer talks about the team doing well whether he's back on week 1 or 9 or 16.

Are you hearing anything specific?

Thanks.

J

Yes, two weeks ago Palmer said that his rehab is one fourth complete, he said that the preseason is kind of iffy, but expects to play Week 1 with several months lead time.

There's little doubt in my mind that Palmer could play week 1, but it's a question of the risk of him being re-injured if the knee isn't 100% healed and him feeling comfortable out there. I see no need to rush him back and let him play week 6 after the bye week Oct. 15. That's an extra month and a half for him to get ready and only 4 games that he'd miss.
