Panic Button (1 Viewer)

Rounders

Footballguy
I thought that I would get a topic going about the appropriate time an owner should address their team's problems. With 3 weeks in the books, is now the time to hit the panic button? Have we seen enough from teams to make informed decisions going forward? Do we start doing this only if our teams are 0-3? What about 1-2? Do we start to panic in week 4 or week 5?

I'm curious to know where some of my fellow FBGs minds are at.

Personally, in one of my leagues I'm on the verge of losing this week and will be 1-2 for the year. I'm not panicking right now. I'm taking a hard look at my players to see what is going on and then making some tough decisions from there.

What you got?

After week 4. I make a lot of critical observations on all my teams after week 4 no matter how I'm doing. You can overcome an 0-3 start but getting 4 games below .500 is time to start thinking about what you can do to get better and take some chances. :2cents:

I think this would vary a lot. If you are 0-3 and the leader in you division is 1-2, I wouldn't worry too much. But yes, after three weeks you have seen enough of your team to make some adjustments.

I am 0-3 and my div. leader is now 3-0. I'm looking to make a drastic change this week.

In any situation where my team's record is terrible I always look to trade depth for starters that have already had their bye weeks. It's a little early to do this b/c there's only been 1 bye week, but the two for 1 trade in this case is your best friend.

The risk is obviously injury, but if you're 0-3 it doesn't really matter.

IMO it's a little early to do this though.

I'm 0-3 and 1-2 but have been snake bit by playing the team that scores the most points that week.

Both leagues I'm top 3 in scoring so don't want to panic even though I'm 3 and 2 games out already. 1 bad coaches decision on my part cost me this week.

I think now you can start looking for the button, but maybe not press it until after week 4. I gave up too early on Roy Williams after starting him for 2 straight weeks, I sat him. And replaced him with the hot Bryant.

Dumb move.

I'm going to do some waiver wire work for another week with my 1-2 team and if I lose again, will be looking to trade. I have a good team on paper and just ran into a good team in week 2 and played the wrong guys this week.

If I were 0-3 and had guys like Moss or LaMont Jordan or Culpepper that I was relying on.....I'd :boxing: the panic button right now as that is a tough hole to climb out of and still make the playoffs.

I disagree. I started 0-6 in a 12 team league and ended up taking second place.

The trick is not how you start, it's how you finish. I needed a little luck to get into the playoffs with that 0-6 record (won out + a couple of key losses by opponents), but it can be done. I won in the same league last year (14 team then) after starting poorly (0-4 or 1-3 I don't recall).

What it means it that you buy low on the guys you think are going to be studs later in the season - guys who aren't doing much now either because of injuries / rookie status / both. 2 years ago, that was guys like McGahee, Julius Jones and Kevin Jones, or a QB like Pennington.

This year, it might be someone like Plummer, maybe Addai, Benson.

And most importantly, I don't think you EVER panic. Sometimes, it can be worthwhile to trade 2 for 1, but always get value. Just work the wire, and gems will unearth themselves in teh next few weeks.

FWIW in my one re-draft league...the team that one (2 diff owners) 2 out of the last 3 years started the year out with a 1-4 record.

In my league, a team with >4 losses has only made the playoffs once in the past four years.I am on the verge of pannic, but I think many things might work themselves out over the season. I believe I have at least two of the top 1/3 of fantasy starters at each position (McNabb, Ronnie Brown, Steven Jackson, Steve Smith, Chris Chambers, Shockey, Graham) but no touchdowns from most of those guys (average 1/week so far). I have to think that these guys will get better, and if they don't... well, then I chalk it up to bad luck and look onto next year.

I guess it depends on the the league itself. 6 out of 12 teams make the playoffs (it was 6 out of 14 but we kept it the same cutting down to 12 teams) - so obviously it's a little easier. It's also a very balanced league. I'd say most of the owners are considered sharks, and everyone in general is very active - and as a result, there are less real dominant teams. For example, only 1 team right now is 0-3 and that's mostly a factor of bad luck - he's the #5 top scoring team. No one is 3-0.And I'm in other leagues with a few sharks and a few guppies and only 4 ouf ot 12 get into the playoffs, and it leads to a more top-heavy league witha few really dominant teams.

I am about to push the panic button. My WRs are awful. I was really worried about them after our draft, but I was hoping to be pleasantly surprised.....well I'm not. We only have to start 2 WRs, so I only carry 3 (R.Smith, T.Williamson, and Mi Clayton). In the first 3 weeks my starting WRs scored me 10, 11, and 7 total points between the two. :X

The only problem is my league knows I am super weak at WR and the vultures are circling me. I am 1-1 and facing 1-2 unless Bush and Vick go off tonight. And I have been no where near the top scoring teams in any of the first 3 weeks (so far).

I think when you talk about pannicking, it also matters on what it is you're pannicking about. For example:

Stud that isn't doing what you expect (LJ) - no TDs, injured Trent Green... could be reason to pannick, and you could still probably get very good value for him, but also know that he'll probably end up in the top 10 at the worst.

Stud that was injured (Steve Smith) - Do you ride out the injury, or trade the injured player for MUCH less than you'd normally get. Before this week, I doubt Steve Smith would have got more than a #20 ranked WR.

Flyers that aren't peforming (Wally Lundy, Mike Bell) - Pretty easy to cut-bait on these guys and grab the hot player on the waiver wire.

Comeback hopefuls (Daunte Culpepper, Fred Taylor) - These are hard ones... they probably took a 10th-12th round pick to get, so they aren't disposable, but are still probably doing about as well as anyone else you would have picked at that spot. They're probably also good to trade or drop if you wanted.

In short ... pannicking with studs probably isn't a good idea since you won't recover anywhere close to your investment. Pannicking with flyers and mid-round busts is probably OK.

I was 2-1, but if they take away the Watson catch, I'll be 1-2. Ugh.
Okay, I was out of town. What's up with this Watson catch?
He was apparently credited with 12 yards on a screen pass that should have gone to Graham. Graham is listed as having 1 catch for 7 yards. I won by 0.8 pts - and if I take this away, I will lose by 0.6 points :)
