Panthers 3rd down/passing back (1 Viewer)

Can any Panthers homers or people with more knowledge of the situation enlighten me to why Goodson is the 3rd down back? Do Stewart and DeAngelo have Shonn Greene-hands or can they not pick up the blitz? It seems silly to not use one of those talents for possible checkdowns or screens every once in a while. I know Goodson is fast as well, but Stewart and DeAngelo have TD potential when the ball is in their hands.

Goodson does have good hands and very good speed, but the same could be said of Williams and Stewart. I thought it was strange as well to see Goodson in so much. Makes me wonder if they're really trying to find out what they have in Goodson for next year when the time comes to re-sign Williams or not. Goodson should probably be used more as a slot receiver. He and Williams or Stewart could give very severe matchup problems for a lot of teams.

A completely healthy J-Stew only had about 6 carries?!?! :loco:
Why are you confused? This is the same MO as the last 2 years with Stewart. When Williams is healthy, he is rarely a good start. He will put up huge games at times, but it is impossible to predict them. Nothing has changed. Oh wait, were you one of those guys who was positive that Stewart's role was going to change despite no indication of that from Fox or the Panthers?

I can say that it was just as much of a shock to Panthers fans as it was to anyone else. DeAngelo is a capable receiver if he needs to be, and Stewart has never shown any reason to believe that he can't be just as capable. Goodson is probably the best receiving threat out of the group, but the other two aren't that far behind.

To be honest, the only thing I can chalk it up to is John Fox and Jeff Davidson being incompetent as they have proved to be on the offensive side of the ball for many years now. Even in the games where the Panthers have put up points, it's always been in spite of the play calls rather than because of them.

With all of that said, sitting both DeAngelo and Stewart is not like them. DeAngelo was practically removed from the game in the second half, so I am a little worried that there is going to be something coming out about him getting dinged up in some way during the game. This is just speculation though, because I haven't read anything about this from any of the beat writers (and I follow them all religiously).

I think the Stewart thing may simply be a case of the coaching staff trying to keep him from doing too much work since he's barely practiced all preseason. Add that to the fact that Mike Goodson has probably been the most improved player on the Panthers, so they wanted to get him involved. I don't agree with the move, but that's probably the reason.

Goodson will probably be more involved as the season goes on, because he is a solid receiving option and he has shown a lot of burst when he gets some space. He's also looking 100% better as a kick returner compared to last season. I wouldn't be surprised to see Goodson in a Tashard Choice kind of role as the season moves on.

I wonder about this as well, but it seems a little odd. I think that most of the staff realizes that they will not be with the team next year, so I don't really see why they would be worrying about seeing players potential for the future.

This game really, really worries me as a Deangelo owner. I already knew that Deangelo is a supremely talented RB mired in a RB split, but now you throw Goodson into the mix? And the Panthers were in a close game, around the goalline, and Stewart and Williams weren't getting the ball?

What the heck is going on?

I gotta say, at this point, if I'm in a re-draft league, I'm bailing on Deangelo/Stewart right now. In dynasty, they are both so talented, though, that you just can't bail yet...But right now it's exhausting to own them.

It's almost as if Fox was doing the opposite thing he has always done, which is play vets over young guys. What a weird scenario for DeAngelo to get stuck behind the vet Foster for a couple of years and now, for a game at least, get stuck behind the youngster Goodson. How odd.

I've been a Goodson fan since was drafted. A pretty dynamic and versatile player, for sure.

He was 'shaken up' yesterday. And IIRC he's had at least 1 concussion so far in his career.

His injury history is worrisome to say the least.
