Panthers make a trade to acquire a safety (1 Viewer)

Just heard it on the radio, not sure if this has already been posted.

HT: 6-0, WT: 205, Born: 8-6-1982, College: Louisiana-Monroe, Drafted: Round 6.

Some notes: I'm told it took one game for him to be promoted to starter as a rookie. He replaced Mike Brown last year when he was injured and filled in quite well. He also started in the Super Bowl last year. Apparently Carolina decided that Mike Minter needs some help and Nate Salley (who was hurt in practice yesterday) might not be the right answer.

Thoughts?

I can't speak for how this move works for the Panthers, but it makes sense for the Bears. Harris is ok -- good hitter, less effective in coverage, borderline starter/back-up material. But so far in camp it's looking like Archuleta and Mike Brown are healthy and will start. They invested a 2nd rounder last year in Danieal Manning, who has looked good, and will likely take over for Archuleta sooner rather than later. They invested a pick or two in the most recent draft on a safety and CB -- later picks who I suppose look promising enough to make Harris expendible.

The Bears might have just gotten a similar pick from Carolina that they traded to Buffalo for Walker.

So trading C.Harris for D.Walker, seems like a good swap for my Bears.

I agree and expect Manning to start this year.... not Archuletta.

damn, I was liking our secondary depth. I liked Harris, not the most talented guy but a hard-worker with a great attitude. Unless this is 4th or better not so sure I like this when we're trying to return to the superbowl, but as effectively as JA is managing this team, I'm not about to question him.

I feel pretty confident Chris Harris will start for Carolina after watching him start a lot of games for the Bears. I think he is the best safety on their roster and giving up a 5th round pick tells me all I need to know. Here are quotes from Fox and the GM:

Fox on the trade for safety Chris Harris from the Chicago Bears: We said we were going to look for safeties. It's a need position. We had the opportunity to get a player that we liked. Hopefully, we'll get him in here as soon as possible and get him indoctrinated into our stuff.

Hurney on the trade for Harris: After the draft, we called quite a few teams and said, "If you have certain guys, certain names that might be available to touch base with us." I think we are fortunate that the Bears have a surplus at that position. They contacted us, and we've had several conversations and reached an agreement on the trade today. We think Chris is guy who will come in and compete. He's smart. He's instinctive. He's a very physical player, and we think that he will come in and help us.

Fox on what he likes about Harris: He's a young player. He does have some experience, starting 20 games. He has been in big spots, both in playoff appearances and even the Super Bowl. He's a young safety that we think has promise.

As a Bears fan, I really don't like this trade. I would rather have Harris than Archuleta. I hope AA can return to form and Mike Brown stays healthy- if not, this trade hurts the depth at a position with a history of injury for the Bears...

Plus, isn't Brown's contract up at the end of the year?

Looks like the pick is a 5th rounder:

Bears-Panthers trade
Nice. I didn't think they'd get so much for him. He was a 6th rounder originally, and, while he's a good hitter, I don't think much of him in coverage. It does deplete the Bears' depth at the position, especially with Brown and Archuletta being a bit injury prone. Anybody out there hear how this years' 5th rounder, Payne, has looked in camp? Went to the same school as Harris, has a similar profile...if he's looked good, he'd make Harris expendable.
