Contract Extension On The Way For WR Smith?

Source: ESPN.com, Pro Football Weekly

Original Article: http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/insider/new...02=stateChanged

Summary: The Panthers and WR Steve Smith are discussing a contract extension. Smith hopes to get a deal done prior to the start of training camp. The deal would allow the team to keep Smith under contract beyond 2009, when his current deal ends.

Personal view: Smart move by the Panthers here-goes without saying. Smith proved last season that he is indeed a top flight WR and now will be compensated as one.

Bad move.Smith is in the best negotiating position of his career. Last season stands out as head and shoulders above any season he's ever had, yet he's going to want a contract and huge signing bonus based on that one season. Let him put up big #'s a few years in a row before extending him to 2010 and beyond. You've already got the guy under contract for 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009. Who knows how he'll be playing by then?

The history of the NFL is replete with WR's that had one, and only one really great season.
