I don't think he's right, but Philly closer is a dangerous job the last decade or so. Smart move getting the fans on his good side at the outset. He may or may not be right, but he most certainly is not a smart man.
This season? In the NL?Pigface likes to stir it up, and thinks his "blue steel" stare will strike fear into NL batters. I'm going to laugh out loud when pigface falls squarely on his snout this season.

Yes and Yes. This is the season we're in and he is in the NL.This season? In the NL?Pigface likes to stir it up, and thinks his "blue steel" stare will strike fear into NL batters. I'm going to laugh out loud when pigface falls squarely on his snout this season.
I'm aware of both...He'll have more sucess pitching in the NL this year...Yes and Yes. This is the season we're in and he is in the NL.This season? Joe Table, Billy Wagner, and Brad Lidge were all subjected to various levels of hatred and abuse at one time or another despite not usually being terrible. Maybe Paps is just trying to get the fans on his good side and make em less likely to boo at the first blown save or two.ETA: Don't mean to suggest only Philly fans boo their own, just that Paps is probably more aware of it as the closer of the team now. Either way, I think it's a good idea to say something to get the rowdier guys on your side right at the outsetI don't think he's right, but Philly closer is a dangerous job the last decade or so.He may or may not be right, but he most certainly is not a smart man.![]()
Mesa was legitimately abused. Blew 9 saves in his second year and was absolute gasoline in his final year.I don't feel like Lidge ever got much abuse. What he did in 08 got him support through all of his struggles.Wagner was somewhere in the middle, I suppose. I don't feel like he was a particularly target. He made some antagonistic comments at the end that I thought were unjustified.I guess that closers don't immediately jump to mind for me when I think of guys who the fans hated. Myers, Abreu, Burrell etc. are more of who come to mind.Joe Table, Billy Wagner, and Brad Lidge were all subjected to various levels of hatred and abuse at one time or another despite not usually being terrible. I agree with ya. I deleted my reply asking Michael brown if he had any idea what he was talking about. To sum up my post...Mesa sucked.Wagner wasn't abused until he became a met and trash talked the Phils. And Lidge is a hero in this city, and was NEVER hated. Not sure where he's getting his info, or if his memory is just failing him. More than likely just brushing the broad stroke that everyone does with Philly.Mesa was legitimately abused. So even though I specifically said that Philly fans aren't the only fans who boo their own, you took it that way anyway. C'mon. Look, I'm a Yankee fan. Derek Jeter was booed by idiotic Yankee fans during his 0-35 stretch and I was there when Mariano Rivera was booed off the mound by even MORE idiotic fans the first week of the 2005 season after a blown save against the Red Sox. So a lot of our fans can be stupid morons. There, did I even it up?Anyway I was basing it off the handful of Philly fans that I know personally. Regardless of it being justified or not, the guys I know have been fed up with each of those guys at one time or another. Lidge is and should be a Philly hero for 08, but the year after the WS when he sucked most of the season, you're telling me NOBODY complained as he put up a 7+ ERA??? Again it's not a knock on Philly fans, as most guys with a 7.21 ERA deserve to be ripped.Looks like I overrated it based on personal experience. No offense intended toward Philly fans.I agree with ya. I deleted my reply asking Michael brown if he had any idea what he was talking about. IIRC, Wagner and the fans had a miscommunication in regards to when he didn't hit 100 on the radar gun.I agree with ya. I am not taking it personally. I certainly have no illusions about the fans in this city. I just have not found that closers have been a particular subject of abuse. And yes, as crazy as it is, Lidge was not really ripped all that much. Not saying that no one ever said a bad word about him, but it just seemed like between the WS hangover and the fact that he never ran away from his struggles and always answered questions, he was able to avoid a serious backlash. Everyone knew that he had to have injuries going on, as well. However, there's no doubt that it's a good idea to try to get the fans on his side. Maybe he should get some advice from Jason Babin . . .So even though I specifically said that Philly fans aren't the only fans who boo their own, you took it that way anyway. C'mon.
