Papelbon Resigns (1 Viewer)

he can always get hurt. hes gotta earn the big bucks. as in earn i mean, hes gotta be healthy for a few years.

So how long can a team abuse a player like this? Do they own the player for 4 years before they have to actually pay full value?

with guaranteed (never could spell that word.) contracts, teams cant afford to spend 12 million on a reliever whos got 2-3 years experience. are you seriously concerned about his well being?

I'm not to concerned about him. I'm just curious as to why he is so underpaid and why some other players are also. Hypothetically, about how much would he get as a free agent right now?

The first few years of a baseball player's career in the pros is not unlike indentured servitude. On the flip side, it allows small-market teams to compete somewhat.

He's just a closer. He is good, but assuming the Red Sox are smart, he wouldn't get that much. Unless, of course, he wanted to try starting again.

Francisco Cordero got a 4 yr, 46 million dollar deal.Eric Gagne got 1/10

Rivera got 3/45

Hell, Scott Linebrink got nearly 20 million for 4 years.

Papelbon would get lots, and lots of money if he were a free agent. He would top Rivera's yearly haul, and he would get at least 4 years, probably 5 out of someone.

He may just be a closer, but for 2 years running he has been one of the best. The best get paid.

Like the Red Sox.
It helps them too, but not to the degree it does for a small/mid-budget team.
Seriously, 775k to them is like one of us buying a Frappuchino (which are awesome, BTW) at Starbucks. Whoopie.
You're missing the point.Imagine what baseball would look like if you could just sign with any team you pleased after one year of major league service. Pretty ugly.
