Unpack this a little for me. How did the Sox have leverage?Leverage is a mother####er
What is Papelbon going to do? Sit out? The Sox could have just given him the minimum. Arbitration is still a year or 2 away for him.Unpack this a little for me. How did the Sox have leverage?Leverage is a mother####er
I dunno. That is why I was asking. I know very little about MLB contracts. What is Papelbon going to do? Sit out? The Sox could have just given him the minimum. Arbitration is still a year or 2 away for him.Unpack this a little for me. How did the Sox have leverage?Leverage is a mother####er
Sox still had control over him for 2 more years.... arbitration in 2010.

This is a 1 yr deal (tho they still control thru 09) so the sox will likely pony up more cash next year if hes dominant once again. I doubt boston lets him go anytime soon.
with guaranteed (never could spell that word.) contracts, teams cant afford to spend 12 million on a reliever whos got 2-3 years experience. are you seriously concerned about his well being? So how long can a team abuse a player like this? Do they own the player for 4 years before they have to actually pay full value?
I'm not to concerned about him. I'm just curious as to why he is so underpaid and why some other players are also. Hypothetically, about how much would he get as a free agent right now?with guaranteed (never could spell that word.) contracts, teams cant afford to spend 12 million on a reliever whos got 2-3 years experience. are you seriously concerned about his well being? So how long can a team abuse a player like this? He's just a closer. He is good, but assuming the Red Sox are smart, he wouldn't get that much. Unless, of course, he wanted to try starting again.I'm not to concerned about him. Like the Red Sox.The first few years of a baseball player's career in the pros is not unlike indentured servitude. On the flip side, it allows small-market teams to compete somewhat.
It helps them too, but not to the degree it does for a small/mid-budget team.Like the Red Sox.The first few years of a baseball player's career in the pros is not unlike indentured servitude. On the flip side, it allows small-market teams to compete somewhat.![]()
Seriously, 775k to them is like one of us buying a Frappuchino (which are awesome, BTW) at Starbucks. You're missing the point.Imagine what baseball would look like if you could just sign with any team you pleased after one year of major league service. Pretty ugly.Seriously, 775k to them is like one of us buying a Frappuchino (which are awesome, BTW) at Starbucks.
