Passport/Airline ticket question (1 Viewer)

I am trying to book a surprise trip for my family. My two kids' passports expire right about the time that the trip will conclude. Based on the new 6-month rule thing I'm looking to have the passports renewed before we go.

However, when I book the flights I'll need to provide passport numbers for each traveler. Once they renew, the kids will have different passport numbers. Will this be a problem to change with the airline?

I guess I could just call the airline, but figured since it is American I might actually get my answer faster here.

This happened to me earlier this year. I booked the flight prior to renewing my passport.

It was no issue at all changing my passport number after receiving my new one.

i recently booked flights to Mexico on AA. Didn't have to provide passport #s right away. As long as i got them entered before the flight, i was ok.

Agree w the above. Don't need a number with the original booking, at least on AA, but it won't let you check in without it.

Pretty sure you don't need a passport.

According to my facebook feed just tell em you're a Syrian refugee and they will let you just walk past customs

Agree with this. I flew out of the country this summer and didn't pick up my passport from the passport office until an hour before my flight, no problems.

You can't travel outside the country without a passport that is valid 6 months after you return date.  My son has a friend in school with American grandparents who were informed when they tried to check in (think it was may or june) and they had valid passports that expired 4 months beyond their stay.

Just made an appointment for Wednesday morning for Thursday travel. Should be all set.

You update your passport information at check in time.

I'm not sure I follow. The airline doesn't have any passport info from me aside from my name. My boss booked it through an agency. I was inquiring about short cuts for getting passport renewed this week.

Not familiar with the options as far as expediting but I would pull out all the stops if you can afford it.  They don't make exceptions from what I have been told.
The DC office is booked, but I'm still going to show up first thing Monday morning and give it til 11 or 12. The lady on the phone said it's been known to happen. I'll bring cookies and cannoli.

If you are close enough to a physical passport office showing up there either as a walk in or with an appointment is the way to go.

Oooorrrrrr...$350 on top of the $170 for 24 hour expedited by rushmypassport.com.
Those aren't guaranteed.  There are regional offices where you can get it done same day (although also not guaranteed).  Where are you located?  Most are in large cities and can be busy but it can be done.  You need to make an appointment, you need to have proof of your upcoming travel, your previous passport has to be in good condition, and you need your updated photo with you.

If you get an appointment for Monday, you should be good.  And, just plan to arrive early.  You might get taken back before your appointment time.

Yeah, I called and talked to a lady from the State Dept website number. She said DC is booked, but I have an appointment for the Philly office in Wednesday morning. That's an official passport agency office, not a third party agency, which rushmypassport.com is. And I'm going to go to the DC office, Monday and Tuesday mornings in hopes of getting in and avoiding the Philly drive or additional $350.
