Filed to ESPN: Dallas traded WR Patrick Crayton to San Diego. Chargers get another receiver that they could use.

This seems to seal even more the idea that VJax won't be back there (even though many felt this was already a lock). I wonder if VJax gets move soon or if this season will just be lost for him?

solid pickup! just grabbed him

had a minimal role and still hovered aroud 100FP last season. ill take him

rivers needs someone to throw to

I don't think this affects Floyd much at all. Crayton isn't good. He'll battle for time as a slot guy. If anything, it's a good thing for Floyd as it looks less likely that VJax will be back

This probably seals Josh Reed's fate and Crayton will likely take targets away from Buster Davis and, possibly, Naanee such as it were.

I wasn't sure Floyd was going to be significantly better than Naanee to begin with. I'm quite certain Crayton isn't. He's depth, and an interesting big play threat, but I doubt he sees more than an occasional spot start for SD. For me...

...Floyd's still the safe play

...Naanee's still the value play

...Crayton's still the don't play

This shouldn't affect Floyd or Naanee, and may not even affect Davis.

It means that Josh Reed won't make the team. It means the Seyi Ajirotutu and Jeremy Williams will not both make the final 53, and maybe neither will.

For what it's worth from what I saw at the Saints/Chargers preseason game:

Everybody not named Floyd and Naanee were dropping passes left and right and in between. This seems like more of a message to Buster Davis and Jeremy Williams.

Is lowly Patrick Crayton the final dagger in any miracle hopes us Vincent Jackson dynasty owners had of him somehow returning to the Chargers?

Interesting times for VJax...

Actually, Floyd (uncharacteristically) dropped two balls against the Saints, if I recall correctly. I don't think Davis has ever dropped a ball as a Charger. (Williams and Tutu have both had some drops this preseason.)

This. Crayton is a nice addition to chargers special teams though.Glad the Cowboys got something for him and hopefully this means ogletree is kept.

This just solidifies the Chargers 3-4 WR Set's. Right now they can only count on Floyd and Nanee. Buster Davis has had a strong camp, but he's made of glass. Reed has been a bust, he'll be cut soon. The Rooks Williams and Seji will help on ST's, that's all. Williams can return Kicks which may help him make the roster. Seji prob PS.

 Crayton will play some slot in 3WR sets, most likely. I doubt he'll be in a better situation than he was in Dallas in terms of PT. Then again Floyd and Davis have been pretty brittle. Very typical A.J. move here, adding veteran depth to the WR corps. It does look like they're committing to life without Jackson. WR depth chart: Floyd, Naanee, Davis, Crayton, Ajirotutu/Williams (whoever is better on special teams probably makes the roster).Hopefully they can find some OLine depth off waivers - I'm not liking what I'm seeing out of those guys these last two weeks.

Bump Roy Williams.
Crayton was firmly behind Roy Williams as it was. Unless Bryant misses significant time due to injury this year, I don't see how this news affects Williams at all.Now Ogletree? He may get some more playing time now.

Chargers trade for WR Patrick Crayton

BY KEVIN ACEE, UNION-TRIBUNE

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 2010 AT 1:20 P.M.

The Chargers have acquired a veteran receiver, sending the Dallas Cowboys a seventh-round pick in 2011 in exchange for Patrick Crayton.

Crayton, who has been with Dallas since being drafted in 2004, had been reportedly on the bubble with the Cowboys. He had been seeking a trade since the Cowboys drafted Dez Bryant in April.

He has 33 career starts, catching 196 passes for 2,888 yards and 23 touchdowns. His best season was 2007 when he caught 50 passes for 697 yards and seven TDs.

Crayton is scheduled to make $2 million this season. His acquisition could mean Josh Reed or one of the rookie receivers won't make the 53-man roster when final cuts are announced Saturday.

I think this says more about the value of Dez Bryant in Dallas.
I don't know. I think Crayton was competing with Hurd and Ogletree for a roster spot in Dallas, and it looked like Crayton wasn't going to get it — not because the Cowboys like Bryant a lot (which they do), but because they like Hurd and Ogletree a lot. (Personally, I'm not sure why they like Hurd better than Crayton, except that Hurd's a tiny bit cheaper.)

I think Crayton plays the slot. I think it will effect Naanee more than Floyd, as far as numbers are concerned.

I've always liked Patrick Crayton, I think he's a solid player. I think it's an excellent deal for the SD Chargers. I look at it this way, if you drafted a 7th round wide receiver from the draft, it's not very likely that you'll get a guy as good as Patrick Crayton from it.

Personally I think Crayton is better than Roy Williams. I'm actually glad Crayton will get an opportunity to do something somewhere else because unfortunately he was buried in Dallas and I believe he's better than that.

hurd plays STs, crayton does not only as a punt returner.plus hurd is younger and for a while he was ahead of austin.crayton also runs his mouth a lot.

Well I think one thing is for sure it can't hurt Philip Rivers' value. It may take Crayton a bit to get up to speed, but he's another viable target for Rivers and their shallow receiving corps got a little bit deeper. If anything, i'd say bumping Rivers is the only sure thing here.

As for the WRs I think this add some more fuel to the idea that VJax isn't going to be back which only makes me feel better about Floyd. I wouldn't bump him up, but i'd feel better about drafting him off this news. Naanee is a trickier one. I think in the beginning of the year his value is about the same, but as Crayton gets more comfortable with the playbook and the offense his value will level off a bit.

Totally agree. Whomever the idiot is above in this thread that said Crayton isnt any good, knows nothing about actual football. Crayton is a great WR. He may not win you any fantasy football games but he is a great football player. He gives 100% all the time and does whatever he needs to do. He plays outside, slot, returns kicks and has a great attitude. I hate Roy Williams. I wish they would have cut him and kept Crayton but I also really like Ogletree and Hurd.

Kevin Acee says he thinks Crayton could be the #2 WR after he learns the offense.
I always though Crayton was at his best when used as a slot type receiver, not a WR2. He has the ability to get open quick off the line, find space over the middle and good hands. The kind of player you want to throw the ball to on 3rd and 4 or even quick hitters inside the 10 yard line.

hate this trade for Dallas. why trade away a solid WR/punt returner for a 7th when you are in a situation to make a Superbowl run

Well, I think they want to use Dez Bryant in those situations this year. If he gets hurt, they have a couple guys that could take the responsibility for a game or two but let's face it, if the Cowboys are going to win anything this year, they can't get killed with injuries, nobody can. The Cowboys have loads of talent at WR, that's not what's going to beat us in the end.On some level, I'm glad for Crayton that he's going to get the chance to see what he really has. He's on a team that really doesn't have a proven WR1 this year (or at least most of it) and they're very good at passing it. If he doesn't make an impact here, then he wasn't the player I thought he was. So, I'm glad for him and will be interested to see how he does. It's time for the Dez Bryant era to start in Dallas........he better be good!

I would think so, too. Naanee is the antithesis of a sure thing. I'm sure SD would love for both Floyd and Naanee to play well enough to have everyone forget about Vincent Jackson, but that seems unlikely and Crayton is the kind of reliable veteran that would have a welcome place in Rivers' passing tree.

I agree (well not with the idiot part, but the rest). DAL loses in this deal on two sides... losing a good ST player and fillin WR and keeping a no talent hack. Too bad JJ invested so much in getting ROY--he's obviously a slacker--one decent year in DET and otherwise has been a complete piece o'crep.. DAL should have tried to trade ROY to SD--but I doubt they would get a 7th rounder for him. SD gets a steal. Once Crayton learns the offense I think he could push Naanee

He just got to the team but with the WRs not really helping Rivers much lat night against KC, does anyone think that Crayton might elevate on the depth charts or get more targets in the next couple of games?

If Crayton had been traded when he asked, he would have been the starter in the slot last night. Crayton was right all along, all he asked was that the Cowboys would trade him in time to get comfortable in an offense before the season started. They didnt. He didnt. Here we are.

Nanee looked pretty solid last night. Rivers was underthrowing guys all night or he may have been even better. Floyd did nothing to excite me.

Crayton will be in the slot anyway. That will give them a nice third or fourth option, just like in Dallas.
