Patrick Willis broken hand! (1 Viewer)

It's apparently a minor fracture and won't require surgery. Reports are that it happened early in the game and he played well to the finish. It's possible that adrenaline played a role, but Willis is a textbook tackler not a grabber and bumper. A broken hand won't help, but assuming the early reports are accurate, he should continue at or near his current pace.

thanks once again jene,

Don't know if it's the same hand but he played with a broken hand in college, didn't he? Didn't slow him down much there.

Yes, if you saw him at Ole Miss (I saw first hand), the cast will not slow him down at all, unless you're talking INTs.

yea had nick barnett last season with the same problem... can't intercept anything... but they kind of use it to their advantage... it becomes a weapon on the field as well as humor for me because i think they look like megaman.

Well...Later reports suggest that the injury is more significant than was originally stated. Willis may need surgery, but decided to put it off. Sounds fishy to me, but there it is. And, FWIW, Willis' tackling has been worse tonight than I've seen it all year long. Three arm tackles that he didn't finish through the first three quarters.Should still get plenty of opportunity with this team but it's worth watching.

Noticed the same thing Jene...I came here to say the same thing about his tackling. Not being able to "grasp" with the hand clearly kept him from making a few tackles tonight.

He looked very tentative with the broken hand. Definitely favoring it. There goes a Demeco-like rookie season, but with that defense he still is good for 5-9 UTs per week.

I dunno.... he started well... was credited w/ 5 tackles but I counted 7 (and re-watched in slo-mo the 2 solos he wasn't given credit for)... and 2 assists.... I think it was more a function of bad crediting.

Regardless of that, he played differently without being able to grab with the hand, which would've resulted in 2 or 3 more tackles that I counted. He would dive at the runner, trying to knock them off their feet with initial contact, rather than wrap them. I'm still holding out hope for him though, as I saw him play pretty effective in college with a cast on....specifically his tackle of Joseph Addai vs. LSU.

I think his numbers were also a product of the game Seattle played. They threw a ton and often I saw Willis drop back in coverage. But he also did seem a little tentative. I don't know how many times I saw him standing over the pile rather than being in the pile.

I think it is safe to say that the broken hand is effecting his play.

2 straight weeks of declining stats when he was on the field for over half the game.

I benched him this week because I was not sure what his stats would be like with the injury. Safe to say I will leave him on the bench until he can prove he can put up decent numbers with the broken hand.

I don't like the matchup for Willis next week vs. AZ....

But I will likely start him the following two weeks regardless vs. CAR and definitely vs. MIN.

SF finishes with CIN, TB and CLE.

Unfortunately I benched him this week, as his broken hand appeared to be having a big impact on his tackling ability. So was today a case of so many opportunities lead to big numbers or was he tackling better this week?

I have started him all year, and then outthought myself this week, benching him for DiGiorgio (I always start Beason and David Harris in my other two LB slots). So what happens? Willis goes nuts and DiGiorgio lays an egg.Never again unless he is in a full body cast.

Amen.

It's a shame Harris didn't crack the starting line-up until week 8, would have been interesting to see who came out on top.

Harris' best streak of two games : 30 solo 11 assist (41 total)

Willis' best streak of two games : 34 solo 2 assist (36 total)

Love the tackle numbers! The guy is a beast, no doubt. Can we get some big plays though?? Anybody know why those have been lacking this year?

dude, he just got you 36 tackles in 2 weeks.

I think that constitutes big enough play.

Keep in mind that Willis currently leads the league in solos (101). Ryans led the league last year with 126 and Willis still has 4 games to play to best that number. Among all other players with AT LEAST 70 solos, Willis has as many, or more sacks than:DJ WilliamsKirk MorrisonErnie SimsDerrick BrooksLondon FletcherJon BeasonLofa TatupuGary BrackettRay LewisIn the same group, Willis has as many or more forced fumbles than:Kirk MorrisonDeMeco RyansJon BeasonBrian UrlacherLondon FletcherRay LewisAngelo CrowellNick BarnettGary BrackettDonnie EdwardsAnd also as many or more passes defended than:EJ HendersonDJ WilliamsErnie SimsDerrick BrooksDonnie EdwardsAngelo Crowell

This is hard to believe ...

per Kevin Lynch (PFW Niners correspondent): Of the 38 tackles Willis was credited with in the recent games against the Cardinals and Panthers, none of them forced a punt.
