Did I hear on radio that in BB experiment to see if they could tell the difference in PSI it was Brady and Garrapolo? Really? Of course these 2 are going to say they can't tell the difference.

Regardless this shouldn't be as big a deal.
they tried to get Wilson, but i guess he was too busy..Who the ***** do you think they were going to use?
Anyone with functioning fingers and a thumb not employed by the team? Clown.

maybe they should have posted on craig's list for a QB that wouldn't mind coming in. This has truly gotten ridiculous.

Like Brady is going to admit there is an obvious difference? This is your science you are standing behind is just a little amusing.

Brad Johnson did Dari and Mel this weekend and he said in-game there was no way you could discern a 2 lb difference. No way. Said it's all about grip and texture.

I'm not standing behind any science and the Pats aren't either. They just did an internal simulation to see if the PSI would drop. Obviosly they found what they wanted as Bellichick basically gave the NFL the middle finger. What I find amusing is that some think the burden of proof is on the Patriots. Again, the NFL must proof the Patriots deliberately did something against the rules..their word...deliberate.

Sure...and I doubt they could prove anything deliberate and still think this is overblown. I just caught that on the radio and with some of the reaction on here like BB solved everything you wouldn't think it involved the most biased individuals on the team.

BB - Jimmy how does that one feel

JG- Wow much better grip

BB- Couldn't hear you...I said how does it feel

JG- umm can't tell a difference coach!

The investigation will tell all I'm sure.

The Pats don't have a responsibility to prove the NFLs case. That's the NFLs job.

Why would Brady/Garoppolo lie anyway? If they felt a difference the Pats wouldn't have mentioned that fact in the conference. Since they didn't at 1 lb (I believe he said they did at 2) they mentioned it.

For those just catching up, here is the big news today, from Florio:

Posted by Mike Florio on January 25, 2015, 3:03 PM EST

At this point, it’s unclear whether the NFL will find any evidence to support the suspicion that someone from the Patriots deliberately caused footballs to lose air pressure. If the NFL fails to find a proverbial smoking gun, that alone could become a different kind of smoking gun.

Even if (and at this point it could be a big if) the league finds proof of foul play, was it really worth it? The NFL has tarnished its own shield by painting a Super Bowl participant as a cheater without clear evidence of cheating. As noted on Friday, some believe that former Commissioners (such as Paul Tagliabue) would have addressed complaints coming from teams like the Colts regarding underinflated footballs not by trying to lay a trap for the Patriots, but by letting the Patriots know that the league office is paying attention to the situation, and that if there’s any funny business happening it needs to stop, now. Instead, the league office opted to try to catch the Patriots red handed.

But what has the NFL really found? As one league source has explained it to PFT, the football intercepted by Colts linebacker D’Qwell Jackson was roughly two pounds under the 12.5 PSI minimum. The other 10 balls that reportedly were two pounds under may have been, as the source explained it, closer to one pound below 12.5 PSI.

The NFL has yet to share specific information regarding the PSI measurements of the balls that were confiscated and measured at halftime. Which has allowed the perception of cheating to linger, fueled by the confirmation from Friday that the NFL found underinflated balls, but that the NFL still doesn’t know how they came to be that way.

“The goals of the investigation will be to determine the explanation for why footballs used in the game were not in compliance with the playing rules and specifically whether any noncompliance was the result of deliberate action,” the league said. “We have not made any judgments on these points and will not do so until we have concluded our investigation and considered all of the relevant evidence.”

Regardless of how hard or easy it could be or should be to get to the truth, the NFL owes it to the Patriots and the league to get there, quickly. Instead, the premier American sporting event apparently will be played under a dark cloud, and anything other than an eventual finding of cheating will seem anticlimactic and contrived. Even if the conclusion is regarded as legitimate, it won’t undo the damage that the Patriots and the NFL will have suffered during this bizarre period of pending allegations that have not yet been proven.

So at a time when the league office is still reeling from an insufficient investigation in the Ray Rice case, the league office now faces even more criticism for a clumsy sting operation that possibly will end up being a swing and a miss. Surely, much of that criticism will be directed privately at the league office from the Patriots.

Complicating matters for the NFL is that the bat initially was swung by Mike Kensil, a former employee of the Jets with a reputation among the Patriots for being an agitator. (Kensil’s father, Jim, served as president of the Jets for 10 years from the late 1970s to the late 1980s.) And so on the same day that the tampering charges filed by the Patriots against the Jets over Darrelle Revis became the latest chapter in a longstanding feud between the franchises, the tentacles of acrimony between the two franchises found a way to erupt into a brouhaha unlike many the NFL ever has seen.

The NFL never should have let this specific situation get to that point. Even if the league deemed it proper to lay a trap, they should have realized the challenges of actually making a trap work. In this case, it appears that they didn’t.

Belichick would never talk that much unless he was lying.

/case closed
:goodposting: this ...I haven't even heard the presser and know he should have just left well enough alone...
Sadly, you are not the first poster in this thread to feel unencumbered by extreme ignorance...though you may be the first to lead with the admission thereof. Well done in that regard, well done.
So not listening to BB's science experiment renders me extremely ignorant? Oh, my I dooley apologize sir...

...and if you wouldn't mind telling what doth possess you for being such an apologist for this franchise dear sir?

At one pound out you are very much in the margin of error for the gauge. Screw everything else. To be sure (or close to it) in that range you'd have to do multiple tests with multiple gauges.

The stupid keeps getting stupider.

question: does the nfl have the balls to back out of this on monday?
Got a link showing what type of gauge they used? No? Then you can't state this with any kind of certainty. Unless, of course, you need to make up facts to prove your side.

It's a good question. Here's the best article on it I could find. Their conclusion is basically an error range of +-1 psi to +-3 psi. And they are using dial gauges in the Peter King video showing actual footage of pregame measurements so the reading errors could be higher than that.http://www.redorbit.com/news/technology/1113318284/theory-to-nfl-deflate-gate-012115ive-retort-to-nfl-deflategate-012115/

Even though it seems like it, this isnt the first time football pressure or football contents have been called into question.

In 2012, USC was actually fined for intentionally deflating footballs.

This year, even, the Carolina Panthers and Minnesota Vikings were warned about modifying footballs.

Then go back to the 1976 Pro Bowl, there was a theory (since debunked) that the Oakland Raiders put Helium in their footballs for better hang time!

Regarding the recent allegations against the New England Patriots, according to ESPN, 11 of the 12 game balls were found to be underinflated by about 2 pounds each.

The NFL specifications say a football must be inflated to 12-1/2 to 13-/12 pounds per square inch.

However, the NFL does say the Referee shall be the sole judge as to whether all balls offered for play comply with these specifications. A pump is to be furnished by the home club, and the balls shall remain under the supervision of the Referee until they are delivered to the ball attendant just prior to the start of the game.

Some people have proposed the pressure drop was due to temperature. But the drop supposedly does not account going from 12.5 PSI to 10.5 PSI in 51 degree Fahrenheit weather for 90 minutes or so.

Most who test the temperature theory come up with a loss of 0.4 to 0.7 pounds, not the 2 pounds the NFL has said.

Theres also good Reddit post that posits the pressure could drop to as low as 11.8 psi due to changes from ambient pressure and temperature.

However, one of the most important parts of any measurement is the accuracy and the reproducibility of the measuring device. We at redOrbit were not able to divine the brand or accuracy of the gauges used by the NFL referees or officials, nor the techniques used to measure the pressure.

As for pressure gauges in general

According to Wikipedia, theres a blanket statement that accuracy of a typical mechanical (pressure) gauge is ±3 psi. Higher accuracy gauges with ±1 psi accuracy can also be obtained.

This certainly explains the measurement discrepancy quite easily, but there are no references cited.

Some precision air pressure gauges are accurate to 0.25%, meaning a variation of +/- 0.3 psi. And these are for laboratory- or process-grade instruments.

Your more pedestrian, but still precision, tire gauges are designed to meet ANSI standards. ANSI (American National Standards Institute) has a standard ANSI B40.1 for pressure gauges. Grade D specifications, which is for inexpensive gauges that you might find for sports applications, has a mechanical accuracy rating of ± 4%.

Our conclusion/theory/product of overthinking (like the rest of this scandal)

So using 4% as our accuracy, we get (at 12.5 psi) a range of +/- 0.5 pounds. And multiple measurements by different devices compound an error, so it is possible that two or more measurements with different pressure gauges by different people could easily reach 1.0 psi of error, or more.

And dont forget, assuming these are dial type gauges, theres the end-users interpretation of what the pressure reads: Is that 12.3 or 12.2 psi?

So if you factor in temperature changes, device accuracy, measurement techniques, and interpretation by the reader, a variance of 2 pounds becomes infinitely more plausible.

USA Today backtracking...

What if Belichick and Brady are telling the truth?

What if they've been railroaded by reputation into holding media conferences and learning physics instead of turning their full attention to a game that has (or at least had) a chance to redefine their legacies?

For all the scientific theories and statistical studies, the only evidence the NFL has acknowledged is some of the Patriots' game balls were found to be underinflated at halftime, with no explanation for why that was.

The mere existence of an investigation will be as good as a guilty verdict for a segment of fans who will be convinced Sunday's game is the champs against the cheaters, no matter how unquantifiable a change in the pressure of a football may be.

That's a huge problem for Goodell, whose words three years ago at the league meetings in the aftermath of Bountygate seem particularly notable now.

Unless the PSI dropped closer to 3-4 PSI, there is no way the Patriots deflated the footballs (assuming the footballs were measured by the refs at room temperature -- which is what the Patriots said, and no one has disputed yet). The Ideal Gas Law says it is mathematically impossible.

For example, say you believe that the Patriots secretly deflated the footballs to 11 PSI, after the refs measured it at 12.5 PSI. Guess what? The colder weather would then drop the 11 PSI football even lower. The HeadSmart study shows an average PSI drop of 1.8 PSI with 12.5 PSI footballs. The cold weather PSI drop with 11 PSI footballs would be less than 1.8 PSI, but would be proportionately less.

I see the inept NFL HQ has started laying the groundwork for blaming lack of proper testing as the issue.

Rog: "Did we get that jerky Belichick, finally?"

#2: "No. Actually, we really screwed the pooch on our sting, Rog. Because the refs were left out of the loop, they continued their practice of not actually testing the psi pre-game. We have no idea if they did anything wrong despite not catching anything on the 400 cameras around the stadium."

Rog: "Well ####. Guess we better leak info blaming improper testing procedures so we can tuck our tails and slink off on this one."

Yes, it has been discussed to death in here. He says "I don't think you can by rubbing it" .... doesn't sound too sure of himself... and doesn't even know how the pats prep the balls. It could be rubbing, smacking, dropping, throwing, punching, kicking, etc. It wasn't 'basic rubbing". He's an avid hawks fan, there's very little to see here.

As dooshy as this thread has been (mostly by the salty haters :lmao: ) I would like to commend every participant on their reasonable, measured, controlled usage of ball jokes.

Bill Nye saying that cold weather will not lower PSI is laughable.

Does he have any scientific evidence to disprove the Ideal Gas Law? It is generally accepted science and easily proven, and there are plenty of experiments showing it in action:

Actually, I don't really want to discuss this crap. Posts deleted.
Oh right.
Exactly. Look at you. You are off the rails about it. But I can certainly understand why you/some are.
Welcome back to the thread. We all knew you'd be back to discuss more.
I haven't discussed anything in a week in this thread.

My one foray I erased because of those who are way too bent about it. Hi.

I do like the occasional logic applied, and Nye is typically very much in that corner. And it was very new to me today.
