First time seeing it. Nye pretty much destroys BB.
This has already been discussed to death in here. He doesn't destroy BB at all.

He also lived in Seattle and is an avid Seahawks fan and says "GO HAWKS" at the end of it. Jeez, even the most irrational Anti-Pats fans in here aren't putting anything into Nye's video.
I meant as someone who is informed in the realm of science. You need to relax.
pretty relaxed. This is just old news... nice backtracking though.
Old news? Laughable.
Bill Nye saying that cold weather will not lower PSI is laughable.

Does he have any scientific evidence to disprove the Ideal Gas Law? It is generally accepted science and easily proven, and there are plenty of experiments showing it in action:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CxsXFX3tDpg
That study is interesting. FWIW, I actually did one myself today. I inflated a ball to 12.0 in my 40 degree garage. I brought the ball inside (~70 degrees) and the PSI changed less than half a pound. Full disclosure: it is a Wilson NFL "official" replica.

Also, I then deflated it to 10.5 and was surprised that it was harder to tell the difference between 12, and 10.5 than I thought it would be. Noticeable, but not a glaring difference.

As dooshy as this thread has been (mostly by the salty haters :lmao: ) I would like to commend every participant on their reasonable, measured, controlled usage of ball jokes.
Yes I'm glad I never went down that road. It's nuts how testy people are in here.
That joke has already been used. Old news.
I think there's a vas deferens between his joke and some of the other usages
Well done.

Dry. So, that's a difference. I'm curious how wet the balls were in the game compared to the guys in the video dunking them in water.

1) its probably not real leather

2) how long did you leave it indoors?

Anybody actually use the ideal gas law and calculate it to determine if billicheat is lying or not?
I don't think anybody's even thought of that
That's right, but if someone does I hope they remember to account for absolute pressure and not just gauge pressure...and they probably should make sure to convert temp to kelvin and psi to pascals otherwise they might look foolish when running their calculations.

And now that I'm thinking about it I really hope Belichick had some help from someone in the area who knows something about physics...does anyone know if there are any good schools in the Boston area that are known for science that might have someone on staff who could assist? Maybe a good vocational tech school or something?

I hear that MIT is a good vocational tech school in the Boston area. Also, someone told me that Harvard is a pretty decent community college nearby.

I would just like to thank the OP for this thread if nothing more than to help weed out which annoying Pats homers to add to my ignore list.

I'm mainly an observer, but you should really look in the mirror when making a comment like that. Just reading the last couple pages makes me think you're exhibit A, but maybe dooshy is a better word for how you come across.

Observation from Facebook:

It seems various Patriot fans in my world, who used to worship Bill Nye for his creationism views...all of a sudden think he's an idiot and perhaps a part of a broad conspiracy against the Pats.

Not surprising that the majority of the ESPN crew now even more thinks the Pats physically deflated the balls. Chris Carter mentioned the Pro Bowl players fuming over the Patriots illegal ways. BB and his science lesson does mot seem to have made a dent in the anti-Patriots camp.
It's somewhat understandable. The BB presser was done during the most off peak hour of the entire week, and lots of key information came out this afternoon that dramatically changes the story. The Florio story that the Pats balls were only off 1 psi and not 2+ psi, as Mort reported last Monday, was confirmed by Vegas Sharks about 30 minutes ago. These guys have been 3 for 3 on this story so far.
was there a link in here to the Florio story and the confirmation you speak of?
For those just catching up, here is the big news today, from Florio:

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/01/25/nfl-bears-plenty-of-blame-for-deflategate/

Posted by Mike Florio on January 25, 2015, 3:03 PM EST

At this point, it’s unclear whether the NFL will find any evidence to support the suspicion that someone from the Patriots deliberately caused footballs to lose air pressure. If the NFL fails to find a proverbial smoking gun, that alone could become a different kind of smoking gun.

Even if (and at this point it could be a big if) the league finds proof of foul play, was it really worth it? The NFL has tarnished its own shield by painting a Super Bowl participant as a cheater without clear evidence of cheating. As noted on Friday, some believe that former Commissioners (such as Paul Tagliabue) would have addressed complaints coming from teams like the Colts regarding underinflated footballs not by trying to lay a trap for the Patriots, but by letting the Patriots know that the league office is paying attention to the situation, and that if there’s any funny business happening it needs to stop, now. Instead, the league office opted to try to catch the Patriots red handed.

But what has the NFL really found? As one league source has explained it to PFT, the football intercepted by Colts linebacker D’Qwell Jackson was roughly two pounds under the 12.5 PSI minimum. The other 10 balls that reportedly were two pounds under may have been, as the source explained it, closer to one pound below 12.5 PSI.

The NFL has yet to share specific information regarding the PSI measurements of the balls that were confiscated and measured at halftime. Which has allowed the perception of cheating to linger, fueled by the confirmation from Friday that the NFL found underinflated balls, but that the NFL still doesn’t know how they came to be that way.

“The goals of the investigation will be to determine the explanation for why footballs used in the game were not in compliance with the playing rules and specifically whether any noncompliance was the result of deliberate action,” the league said. “We have not made any judgments on these points and will not do so until we have concluded our investigation and considered all of the relevant evidence.”

Regardless of how hard or easy it could be or should be to get to the truth, the NFL owes it to the Patriots and the league to get there, quickly. Instead, the premier American sporting event apparently will be played under a dark cloud, and anything other than an eventual finding of cheating will seem anticlimactic and contrived. Even if the conclusion is regarded as legitimate, it won’t undo the damage that the Patriots and the NFL will have suffered during this bizarre period of pending allegations that have not yet been proven.

So at a time when the league office is still reeling from an insufficient investigation in the Ray Rice case, the league office now faces even more criticism for a clumsy sting operation that possibly will end up being a swing and a miss. Surely, much of that criticism will be directed privately at the league office from the Patriots.

Complicating matters for the NFL is that the bat initially was swung by Mike Kensil, a former employee of the Jets with a reputation among the Patriots for being an agitator. (Kensil’s father, Jim, served as president of the Jets for 10 years from the late 1970s to the late 1980s.) And so on the same day that the tampering charges filed by the Patriots against the Jets over Darrelle Revis became the latest chapter in a longstanding feud between the franchises, the tentacles of acrimony between the two franchises found a way to erupt into a brouhaha unlike many the NFL ever has seen.

The NFL never should have let this specific situation get to that point. Even if the league deemed it proper to lay a trap, they should have realized the challenges of actually making a trap work. In this case, it appears that they didn’t.
.

Mort is such an a-whole. He is so screwed if this is in fact true.

Tom Brady said on ESPN this morning that the NFL told him they will wait until after the Super Bowl to speak with him about this.

I think it's time to wait this one out and see what happens. The investigation will not be wrapped up anytime soon so it will just be the circular argument cycle going on and on until then.

I was initially confused by the Nye headlines, but after watching the clip I realized that it was all tongue-in-cheek. Obviously, Nye understands the science and was playing dumb for the cameras. He even signed off with 'Go Seahawks' for chrissake.

It said some one in the NFL office that was a FORMER Jets employee (if Florio is accurate). A guy that hasn't worked for the team in about 10 years. Do you know who else is a former Jets employee? Bill Belichick.

Like most of the general population, they are idiots. Nye was clearly trolling. He obviously doesn't believe the only way to change pressure is with a needle. Hence the "go hawks" at the end of the segment.

From Mike Taniers column this morning:

But I have two specific punishments for the Patriots that have nothing to do with canceling the Super Bowl or vacating all of their championships and sending three Lombardi Trophies to Marty Hundley to make him feel better:

1) Sportswriters are banned from using the phrase "The Patriots Way" forever.

The phrase should be flagged with a purple underline by word processors. The Patriots Way is a big reason why we are in the Deflategate predicament. The Patriots have never been allowed to be a team that won bunches of football games because they are well-organized and have lots of great players. The New England-based sports media military industrial complex insisted on declaring them our intellectual, moral and philosophical betters.

Every champion is going to enjoy some undue butt kissing, but The Patriots Way is unique and excessive. There's no San Antonio Spurs Way, even though the Spurs are the Patriots of the NBA. The Steelers won multiple championships in the last decade without inspiring some quasi-religious Steelers Way.
I don't follow basket ball, but I thought I read that the Atlanta Hawks were doing things the Spurs way? And people talk about team building The Steelers Way all the time.

There are things I like about the way the Patriots do things. I really liked it when I heard the Pats had the most players in the league who had gotten their degrees. I like thinking we're a smart team. I USED to like to think the Pats drafted for character, too, but Hernandez deflated the #### out of that one.

Anyway this column is pretty much belittling the 'gate' thing.

He does call what Bill talked about on Saturday as 'pseudoscience'. I wouldn't call it that. More like back yard science. That's all science is -- checking stuff out.

Everyone needs to realize that Bill Nye is an ACTOR. He has no more academic credentials to speak of than most of the posters in this thread. Bill's doctorates are all honorary: he never actually achieved more than a bachelors degree in school.

People need to remember that he is mostly an actor. He's probably a smart guy, but he's not someone that should be taken as a scientific expect in much of anything.

I think one of the biggest issues with this whole thing is the fact that someone in the league disclosed information regarding the investigation to Mort or some other media member. That is my biggest problem with this whole thing. There should have never been any leaks and they should have just said it was an ongoing investigation.

Once you start leaking out supposed information that will be taken as fact you start a media frenzy and sway public opinion. Where would this have gone if there were no reports that the balls were under inflated and the only release of info. was confirming the league was looking into the situation?

Personally I think the NFL loved the opportunity to throw out every incriminating detail they could and stain the Pats from the git go. That's why I think they have nothing left as it would be out there already. Nothing should have been released, good or bad until the investigation was concluded. The NFL once again is proven to be a joke.

reading comprehension way down yesterday. My apologies.

King reporting that there usually is a 6-10 minute period of time between the officials handing the balls to the ballboys and kickoff.

If after everything that has been reported, people still believe the ballboys raced off to deflate the balls in that short period of time...well i guess your minds are made up. But just understand, the "salty haters" are the ones who are the conspiracy theorists now.

Son of a . . .

It was BB that deflated the balls and BB that tipped of the league about it. BB is probably the leak, too!

Do these idiots even understand that the weather is GOING to affect the ball pressure, it's only a question of how much? :wall:
Wonder why nobody thought of that?
Thought of what? That the weather is going to affect the balls? Many people have thought of that, but apparently all these reporters are completely unaware of it. Whether the numbers work out or not is still up for debate, but it's not debatable that the balls WOULD get softer. So there's no reason for them to act so incredulous that Brady wouldn't have noticed anything.
NEWSFLASH to Parrot and Yellowdog: All 12 Indy balls were pumped up to specification, so you can't play the weather card. Only the NE balls were deflated.
NE's bench is on the colder side of the stadium.
I'm sorry, I was all the way over here. I couldn't hear you. Did you say NE's bench is on the colder side of the stadium.? That's it?

Are we to believe that footballs will lose more pressure on NE's sideline than on the opponent's sideline?

Well, perhaps the laws of physics cease to exist on NE's sideline. Were these magic footballs? I mean, did you buy them from the same guy who sold Jack his beanstalk beans?
Dead on balls accurate.
I think the clear winner in this thread, given BB's 'Mona Lisa Vito' reference, is Rick6668. A minor kudos to myself for some excellent coat-tailing.

Clearly the secret to winning - to quote a fellow pats fan in this thread - "an assload" of games, is to play against yourself. Every game is a win!

Goodell and Kraft are buddies. Not sure why you think the NFL wants to incriminate one if their Super Bowl teams, especially one that alreasy has a knock against them. With the image issues the NFL currently has. I guess Goodell has screwed things up way worse in the past, so perhaps you are correct. But to me, it seems like they have a leak issue and haven't issued any statement yet cause they are 1) enjoying the extra press, negative or not, and 2) they don't know how to resolve this issue

Four of Boston’s best scientific minds agreed: If you take a ball from a warm place to a cool place, it will lose air pressure.

I don't think the NFL cares about casting the Pats in a bad light, just the opposite. Goodell and many of the NFL brass hate BB, that isn't a secret. They love the frenzy created with the public over the cheating Pats and it boosts their ratings. This whole thing to me looks staged, from the sting operation to the immediate media leaks.

The NFL isn't stupid, everything thing they do is very calculated to ultimately to do one thing, increase revenue. The only potential loser out of this situation is the Pats, especially BB and that is just collateral damage.

The thing that I can't figure out is Kraft and what he is thinking? I'm trying to give him the benefit of the doubt but to me the almighty $$ and NFL shield is his true driving force, not the Pats,Brady, BB or most importantly the NE fans. It's beyond comprehension how he hasn't come out and supported both his coach and QB in their time of need. I think that speaks volumes as to the relationship between them and his true allegiances.
