For much of the past two weeks, the Patriots have faced questions about whether they used deliberately deflated footballs in the AFC title game win over the Colts, eventually leading the NFL to tap Ted Wells to launch an investigation that will take several more weeks.

While owner Robert Kraft and every other member of the Patriots have declared innocence, Commissioner Roger Goodell said Friday that, "we have made no judgments" thus far.

But over the course of the last two weeks, multiple sources have shed light on the situation surrounding the Patriots, their 12 game-day footballs, and deflation. Here is what they've said:

>> Prior to the game, a game-day worker employed by the Patriots, a man described as elderly, took two bags of 12 footballs (one bag from each team) into the restroom near the referees' room in Gillette Stadium. The man was in the room for 98 seconds. When he exited the room, he took the balls to the field. There is video of the man entering and exiting the bathroom, but it's unclear if there is a clear shot inside the restroom.

>> That the man entered the restroom prior to walking with the footballs onto the field was discovered by the Patriots, and video footage was quickly turned over to Ted Wells for his investigation.

>> When coach Bill Belichick and Tom Brady were told there were questions about the footballs, both were incredulous. Belichick indicated privately what he said publicly: That he had little knowledge of what went into pregame footballs. Brady told someone close to him that he works on the footballs all week, then has no idea what happens to them on gameday.

>> Eleven of the 12 footballs used in the first half were judged by the officials to be under the minimum of 12.5 PSI, but just one was two pounds under. Many of them were just a few ticks under the minimum.

>> Many of the footballs used in the AFC title game, which all have Walt Anderson's initials on them, were returned to circulation among the rest of the Patriots game-day footballs. Because Anderson was the referee for two other Patriots games this season, there are more than 30 footballs with his initials in the team's possession. It appears the league has the football <a data-ipb="nomediaparse" data-cke-saved-href="http://www.nfl.com/player/d" href="http://www.nfl.com/player/d" qwelljackson="" 2506889="" profile"="">D'Qwell Jackson intercepted and took to the sidelines to ultimately hand over to his equipment staff.
This really is unfreakin believable that they put us thru all this #### and in the end they have only 1 ball significantly under, the one handled by the colts. This whole thing was BS.............
I am so ####### pissed off right now I'm going to have to go to the gym and work it off. Now we hear that "several of the Patriots footballs were "just a tick under 12.5". Are you ####### serious? So the NFL just dragged its best franchise through the mud for two weeks leading up to the Superbowl, and sullied the reputations of a Hall of Fame owner, Coach and Quarterback, and the only ball in question that POTENTIALLY violates the Ideal Gas Law is the one that Indianapolis and Mike Kensel had in their position? Are you ####### kidding me? And not only did the NFL not shut this down, but they waited for two weeks to correct the leaks out there about the amount of deflation in the balls?

If I'm Robert Kraft I go nuclear on this. Seriously. I blow the whole ####### thing up and get Goodell fired right in a couple weeks. He can do it. I'm sure he's got a lot of dirt on the NFL and knows where the bodies are buried. It's painfully obvious that Robert Kraft is way too nice a guy for this sorry lot of owners and the the inept management running this dysfunctional league.

#### the NFL, #### the Colts and their drug addict owner, #### that little two faced weasel Harbaugh and that whiny little Ravens franchise, #### the media for not getting at the truth earlier, and most of all #### Roger Goodell.

How's that?

Pretty good

Yeah, I'm pretty much ignoring Mort from now on. This is the second straight huge story that he completely screwed up and he has lost all credibility with any knowledgeable football fan this year. Time for that idiot to hang up his keyboard.

Well, it does make sense that they were all differently underinflated. Just means the elderly ball guy was haphazard in his deflating. He did only have 90 seconds so he probably did the best he could.

At this point, I think it highly unlikely that the NFL has proof that that patriots deflate their balls. That doesn't mean they don't do it, it means the NFL simply won't be able to prove it. It also means that the league will monitor Patriot footballs very closely from here on out.

As for me, I will be operating under the assumption that the Patriots have been doing this since 2007. I'm just glad they won't be getting away with it any more.

If they deflated their balls, they would have read at like 9.5 PSI :lmao:

Because its not scientifically possible to deflate less than 2 psi?

Not according to the random guy they asked at a Wilson plant.

Dilfer surprisingly of all people just shot back against Chris Carter and Ray Lewis about how ridiculous this is. Trying to recover from his week 4 verbal diarrhea methinks.
Ray Lewis talking about integrity is hysterical. Between covering up a murder and the deer antler spray, he comes off as the biggest hypocrite in ESPN history.
Yeah, Dilfer took a long pause when he said integrity of the game, as he full body shifted to look at Lewis. Think he was being pretty clear.

Agreed, I don't see how they could have definite proof and I doubt before this anyone really watched it closely.

while I agree with you 100%, I always kind of cringe when the deer antler spray gets lumped in with murdering 2 people

If the Patriots and their fans wanted the benefit of the doubt when ANYTHING shady even looks like it MIGHT be going on, they shouldn't have gotten busted for Spygate and been forced to pay the biggest fine and penalty for cheating in the history of professional sports. Tell me that others did it too and that it wasn't a big deal, but in the end, if it didn't help they wouldn't have done it and if it was wrong they wouldn't have paid the price they did.

It's been anything but a model franchise and skepticism by everyone else is the price you pay when you get caught.

The NFL was always going to have a hard time proving anything. My best guess at this point is that the Patriots do what they do to the balls knowing full well they end up lower than the legal limits and that's what Tom likes. They're detailed enough with how they plan things out that it's insulting for them to say they don't monitor that stuff. Can it be proven? Of course not, so they're safe from that, and it's looking less and less likely that anyone physically did anything to the balls. But all of this is probably going to result in rule changes about how balls are prepared and tested before (and during) the game, that's almost a certainty.

Is that intent to get around the rules? Who knows, everyone will judge that differently and if they get in trouble with the NFL, that's probably what it'll be about. And it doesn't matter if others do it, it matters who got caught doing it. But that's what the Patriots do... they push the envelope any way they can to get an advantage, and some (especially players it seems if pregame shows are any indication) feel it's a shady way to operate a franchise.

In the eyes of their fans, Bill and Brady can do no wrong and if I were a fan of theirs, I'd probably see it that way too. But public perception is very different.

I know it's only one ball that's 2 psi over, but that's the whole point of the scheme. That is Brady's ball, and the Pats always sneak it through and use it on big drives. The NFL gets 12 balls that are ok, and don't even bother with the 12th. I hope someone finally cracks down in these cheaters

I think you're overlooking the obvious

brady hardly ever throws picks, right?

he famous for it

so in one of the biggest games of the year he just conveniently happens to throw a ball right to the colts that's conveniently underinflated, prompting the colts to push this whole investigation and rally the pats in the superbowl while simultaneously humiliating the colts..........

About the response I'd expect from you. Good luck today.

Good lord, umm yes, just like they changed the rules about steroids when they found the Steelers were cheating.

It was ok when the Steelers let 2 PSI out of the football (after the refs checked them), but one NE bal (the 1 the colts handled) is 2 psi under the rest 1 psi or less many just a few ticks under and they are cheaters.

R u for real steelroid fans?

You would think some of the haters could see and now admit this was all a witchhunt and there is nothing to see, but no, too much hate and jealousy. Instead we have pompous hypocrite Steelroid players and their fans wailing about integrity. Got news for you steelroid fans you have no business saying anything, you have no integrity; u cheated with the roids and you cheated manipulating the footballs.

Skepticism? Is that what that was? Looked like a rush to judgment to me. The world is full of chumps & fools that will take the word of anonymous sources as undeniable truths. The information most based their opinions on were in all likelihood flat out lies. People got riled up no different than bees out of a hive that some jerk threw a rock at. Kind of pathetic in my eyes but feel free to justify it as you please. Suckers.

I don't think I've ever disclosed this, but I grew up in the 70's and the Steelers were my favorite team during that period. Given the ridiculous opinions expressed by Steeler fans regarding the Patriots the past two weeks, I'm about ready to renounce my Steeler fandom. Just not at all well informed, and not at all befitting one of the best dynasties in football history.

This whole issue seemed silly at the beginning and still seems silly. But, what you cannot get away from is that a large percentage of the general public see the Pats as cheaters. Like most things some of it is deserved and some of it isn't, but it is clear that this perception is not going to go away. The Pats have had an amazing run of success, but fair or not it will always be tainted by the perception that NE is an organization that is willing to break rules if it gives them an advantage. Pats fans can get upset about it or just enjoy the success and not care, but it is not going to go away.

Yes it is. And no, the Colts will not be investigated for it.
they sure as hell should be. any idiot can let the air out of the ball and then go ##### to the refs.

unbelievable.

Not sure why, but I expected better from you.

One ball is significantly underinflated (the 1 the Colts handled) and that is good enough "evidence" for you that NE deflates their balls? They have been "doing it" for years and no one ever noticed......

How about they submit their balls at 12.5 maybe slightly under just like 31 other teams who submit their balls similarly or maybe over 13.5 (hello gb) and there is nothing more to see other than jealousy and hate for NEs success. NE is hated because all they do is win and much like the class warfare society we live in today they are hated and vilified for their success.

You have nothing and yet you want to believe there guilty so you do; pretty sad......

Win what? NE has clearly been one of the best teams in the NFL for more than a decade, but quotes like the above bolded and the previous "heavy is the head that wears the crown" confuse me. What exactly has NE won in the last 10 years that make them such a target?

Ummm, can you list the teams that have won more games than NE in the last 10 years?

Can you list even one?

Really? And you're a man of science? Lots of bias in that conclusion sir.
Absence of evidence <> evidence of absence.
Not sure why, but I expected better from you.One ball is significantly underinflated (the 1 the Colts handled) and that is good enough "evidence" for you that NE deflates their balls? They have been "doing it" for years and no one ever noticed......

How about they submit their balls at 12.5 maybe slightly under just like 31 other teams who submit their balls similarly or maybe over 13.5 (hello gb) and there is nothing more to see other than jealousy and hate for NEs success. NE is hated because all they do is win and much like the class warfare society we live in today they are hated and vilified for their success.

You have nothing and yet you want to believe there guilty so you do; pretty sad......
They were suspected of deflating balls prior to the AFCCG. They may have been warned prior to the game that the refs would be watching for it. Just because the patriots were not caught does not mean the Colts didn't have legitimate concerns heading into the game. As an obviously biased salty homer, you want to give the Patriots the benefit of the doubt. I choose not to, given prior convictions and strings of other allegations, including but not limited to shenanigans with opposing team communications, keeping bradys helmet radio on longer than allowed, etc.

Further, I do find the patriots significant reduction of fumbling since 2007 to be very... Curious. Obviously, correlation <> causation, but its certainly interesting.
