Colts got caught too - 75% of the balls tested were under inflated

where is the outrage ? cheating, rule breaking Colt
Atmospheric conditions explain the colts balls, not the patriots. I've explained how and why many times already, I'm not going to do it again. If you want to understand why the Pats got busted and not the Colts, read thru this thread and/or the Wells/Exponent report. Otherwise, please stop. Ignorance is not endearing.

Oh just stop it fellow pats fans. Brady messed with the psi in footballs and got caught, and he and/or the team has been penalized for it. Just stop engaging other fanbases about it. You will never convince them, they will never convince you. If this had happened to another team, you would be piling on them just like they are on you. Likewise, they would be just as defensive.

It is no different than politics or nationalism. Point of view dictactes the narrative, with mental gymnastics creating a new reality that the other side just doesn't live in.

moleculo you did try, but failed

Brady won't see a day of suspension once his lawyers blow through the NFL's idiocy
Do you at least understand why the pats balls were suspicious and the colts were not? That's a pretty basic aspect here that you aren't grasping.

Because a guy who called himself "the deflator" and joked about releasing pressure from the footballs snuck the balls into a locked bathroom after they'd been checked by the refs and Tom Brady couldn't look anyone in the eye and say he didn't do it?

This entire thing has been very entertaining, but it's starting to bother me how disassociated Pats fans are from reality. Yes, it's fun to poke fun at blatant homerism, but we are witnessing stupid at an entirely new level. It started off as funny, but now it's kind of gross.

Kind of sad that this is their version of crossing the Rubicon.

The worst part about all of this is that everyone one of you women have shown the NFL it can profit off of this reality TV Keeping up With the Kardasihan Housewives of Atlanta drama crap ----- so we will get more of it.

I hate all of you for this. :hot:

People like stealthycat are the minority. Living in Mass, most people around here that I've talked to believe that Brady definitely likes his footballs low but think that the NFL screwed this whole thing up beyond belief.

Kind of avoiding the point there, no? Was there tampering, and was Brady involved?

I'm in the "yes and yes, but he and the team have been ludicrously over-punished for it" camp...

Very rational take IMO. The only way the punishment fits the crime is if there was more to the previous infractions that we, the general public are not privy to.

I'm going to hold onto the take where Brady didn't tell anybody to cheat, he just made life miserable for the equipment shmoes until they did.

So you take the 1-in-a-million "so you're telling me there's a chance" position. Sounds about right.
No, I actually think it's 'more probable than not'. Based on me giving a great of the game the benefit of the doubt.

If I'm wrong about that, so be it.

And I'm also totally sure that this was way, way, way overblown.

(heh. overblown)

If that is what truly happened, Brady would have been MUCH smarter to just admit to this in the first place. "Hey guys, this is on me. I gave them a hard time about the air pressure of the balls and they just took this too far." This would have been done and over with and he would have likely gotten off with a slap on the wrist while sparing the organization from any penalty. I'd be pissed at Brady if I were Belichick and/or Kraft.

The Pats were only "ludicrously over-punished" if you ignore all context.

The message from the NFL is, "It's not OK to cheat. Stop cheating". The league tried to send that message to the Pats in 2007, with $750K in fines and a forfeited 1st round pick.

Their message wasn't heard at that volume, apparently. So they spoke more loudly this time.

We don't have to prove anything to cast the most severe judgement ever rendered in the NFL.

That was the message, and it's one the NFLPA will make sure costs Goodell his job.

So true.
It bothers me that a fan of any team thinks their fans are different than any other group of fans.
I agree with this. The problem is that this site gives us a distorted view of a team's fans because usually only the most die hard are here. There probably aren't too many Yankee fans that would defend Arod but I bet if you went to a Yankee thread there would some guys there professing his innocence.

The same is here. The patriots fans I have talked to off this site all agree Brady is guilty. They might disagree on the severity of punishment. But you come here and get to hear from the small subset of Pats fans that believe Brady can do no wrong. That is also evidenced by that rally they had for Brady where only 1500 people showed up. That is also a very small subset of the overall fan base.

Right.

Like Goodell was going to lose his job because he was going against Kraft? That seemed to be one of the themes being bandied about a hundred pages ago or so.

Much as you want to think this is some grand conspiracy to "get" the Pats, the reality is they screwed up and are being punished for it (probably too severely, IMO). While Goodell may have been a little heavy-handed with the punishment, if he didn't get fired after mangling the Ray Rice incident, he's not going to get fired for being a little too harsh with repeat cheaters.

I agree with this, I thought Brady was on EEI saying as much, that he likes the ball a little soft... so what. Did he ever tell them to go below the legal limit? Did he deflate the balls? I've never heard any proof that this happened. If this was Josh McCown or some middling QB, at worst it would be a game and forgotten, or less. Goodell is out of line and should be canned, he's gone power mad. Kraft woosed out and rolled like a #####, Brady should be pissed at Kraft for that. I'm beginning to think Kraft is a heartless and spineless cutthroat businessman and he'd cut or destroy anyone who's usefulness has left him. He's one big false act.

Its a culture of being a terrible commissioner and the NFLPA is done dealing with it.

They are taking Goodell to court over Petersons situation. They intend to take Goodell to court if he doesn't recuse himself, which he already said he wouldn't.

Remember how there were some Japanese soldiers who didn't believe they'd really lost WW2 and kept fighting for years afterward?

No idea why that just popped into my head.

You've made a mistake in your calculation...

I'm comparing the Patriot fans to 30 other fan bases that I interact with a ton.

Not my teams fan base, that's for others to decide.

Apparently Goodell was Kraft's boy once upon a time. Some theorize these insane punishments the Pats keep getting for minor infractions are a case of Goodell trying to prove he isn't Kraft's stooge (think Theon Greyjoy when he raided Winterfell).

One of the funniest anti-Pats positions essentially says Kraft is getting what he deserves because he pushed so hard to make Goodell Commish in the first place.

But as for the quoted, I doubt Run It Up would argue the NFLPA has the official authority to get rid of Goodell. What it has is the ability to make enough of a stink to cast any future argument for keeping him in a very dubious light.

A bit of a Catch-22 for Goodell apparently:

Treat the Patriots fairly, and you: A) Undermine yourself by ignoring your obnoxious precedent with spygate; B) Upset frothing fans around the country; and C) Lend credulity to the idea you're Kraft's boy.

Treat the Pats unfairly (what he chose to do) and you: A) Irreparably piss off one of your key allies among the owners; and B) Give the NFLPA the wedge issue it needs to run wild.

Well the obvious bias in this post is that you think Goodell treated the Pats unfairly.

They cheated (repeatedly), and got punished. I think the punishment was harsh, but I'm not privy to all the details of past NE issues. Some theorize that after one of their earlier issues, the Pats were told, "knock it off, or we're really going to hammer you." If that is true, then this punishment isn't unfair; rather it is an authority figure following through on an earlier disciplinary agreement.

That being said, despite what you (and other Pats fans want to think), Goodell's job is safe. When he screwed over the Redskins and Cowboys after the uncapped year, he kept his job. When he botched the bountygate situation, he kept his job. When he screwed up the Ray Rice situation, he kept his job. Now that he MAY HAVE came down harder than necessary on the Patriots (a decision that most other NFL teams are probably in support of), he will keep his job. The NFLPA can be unhappy, but they don't have the power to change it. You really think this "wedge issue" of Brady getting suspended for 4 games is going to make a difference? Get real. The CBA doesn't expire for 5 years. The NFLPA isn't going to strike over this. I know that Pats fans think their team is so important that all the other players will say "let's strike b/c they aren't treating Tommy nice," but that's a dream. The NFLPA didn't force a strike when Goodell suspended the NO players after bountygate, they didn't force a strike when Ray Rice was double suspended for 1 offense, they didn't force a strike when Peterson was essentially given a 1 year suspension (albeit with pay), they aren't going to force a strike because Tommy-boy got caught cheating, when most of the other players have suspected the Pats of cheating for years.

All said and done, Goodell is making them HEAPS of cash. He could punch a baby and they would keep him around.

What Goodell has done is sit around watching the game make money. The game rules right now. What has he actually done? Are these loopy out-of-country games really doing anything? These owners at least know money.

But, I will say Goodell has presided over some really sweet CBAs. He does play hardball. That may be enough to make him invincible.

Its a culture of being a terrible commissioner and the NFLPA is done dealing with it.

They are taking Goodell to court over Petersons situation. They intend to take Goodell to court if he doesn't recuse himself, which he already said he wouldn't.
It doesn't matter if they are "done dealing with it," because they don't have a choice.

They can intend to take him to court, but they can't get rid of him.

So I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess you're not a fan of Tom Brady. If "Tommy-boy" ran over your dog or something, on behalf of Patriots Nation I apologize.

The bolded is just hilarious, so I bolded it.

Also, I fail to see why you're making Goodell's job security another front in the Pats fans vs. haters war here. You've done a fairly good job of listing an awful lot of straws that are making the camel very uncomfortable. A perfectly neutral observer can see what a sh*tshow Goodell has presided over, and conclude his days are numbered. Makes little difference to me... unless of course the next guy won't crucify my team over BS.

And again, cheated, cheated, cheated... they had a guy on their sidelines with a camera seven years ago!!! In what universe is that a big deal? Just this vague nonsense from you people, because if you dealt in specifics the absurdity of your arguments would be self-evident. Their 'cheating', then and now, amounts to little more than shenanigans, and should be punished as such (in the case of January, again, a five figure fine for something with a minimum of $25,000).

Have you ever played football, or coached it? Do you have any idea how normal things like this are, even at minor levels? (Furthermore, can you grasp the simple concept that in my asking that, I'm not pretending that cheating is okay and deserves no punishment whatsoever?)

So the theory that this punishment is not an isolated incident, but part of an ongoing discipline situation is "hilarious," but your theory that Goodell is "picking on" the Pats to prove he isn't Kraft's stooge is valid? Right, because after "picking on" the Pats with Spygate, Kraft would continue to support Goodell, helping him to get huge raises, and keep his job after his disastrous handling of the Ray Rice situation. Yeah, that theory is air-tight, if you are a desperate Pats fan grasping at straws.

As far as being a fan of Brady, read any of my posts in any threads discussing him. I've consistently said he's the greatest QB of this generation, and (at worst) the 2nd best QB of all time. Hell, read the posts I've made in this thread where I've said he is still one of the greatest QBs ever, still a first-ballot HOFer, this won't diminish his legacy at all, etc.

And yes, CHEATED, CHEATED, CHEATED. You can try to downplay it all you want, but they cheated. When it's convenient for you, you only focus on absolute facts (punished for videotaping from the wrong position, $25,0000 fine at minimum-but we'll ignore this b/c it doesn't fit our position, etc); then when it's convenient to use theories, you embrace that (sting by the Colts, Ravens, Kensil, the man on the grassy knoll, and Colonel Mustard in the library to get the Pats). They were caught cheating, publicly, twice, now. Who knows how many other non-public instances, or times they didn't get caught, there were. Irregardless, they cheated before, and they didn't stop.

I'm not making Goodell's job security a part of any "war" here. Someone (not sure if it was you or not) said something like "the NFLPA is going to cost Goodell his job." That's laughable, and only fits with the warped view Pats fans have of the importance of their team. Goodell handled bountygate, Peterson, & Rice far worse than he handled this situation, and he didn't lose his job; the idea that he will lose his job over this is ludicrous, and is only being bandied about Pats fan-boys b/c they have no logical points to make anymore.

This is a very bizarre post.

I mean, I don't expect anyone to follow me too closely, but I've written the word "minimum" (in normal size font) more times than I can count. Pretending I'm hiding that fact is not even grasping at straws, it's just inventing stuff. I mean, chastise me for defending Hitler while you're at it.

And, just to to simplify things a bit... the likelihood or unlikelihood of Goodell losing his job is not something I, as a Pats fan, put much pride in. You think he'll survive? Good for you champ.

And then, of course, you take up the 'cheater, cheater, cheater' challenge... and repeat the very vague nonsense I was kinda hoping not to see for the 567th time.

Sorry my focus on absolute facts is such a bummer for you. I also wish my sole vacation of the facts, with suggesting it was all a Colts Sting!, had actually happened, simply because it would've brought you almost as much comfort as seeing "Tommy-boy" hanged (but you actually like 'Tommy-boy', do you? Make it a little clearer please, and call him by his proper name: Tom F*ckin' Brady [super Bowl MVP, and 4-time Super Bowl winner]).

It bothers me that a fan of any team thinks their fans are different than any other group of fans.
You've made a mistake in your calculation...

I'm comparing the Patriot fans to 30 other fan bases that I interact with a ton.

Not my teams fan base, that's for others to decide.
Not a problem. Let's be clear.

To think that a large group of fans from any team are any different from the fans from any other team is folly IMO. There's a beautifully drawn bell curve (perhaps skewed) that looks the same for all sets of fans. It ranges from total homer moron all the way to total class for each set of fans. The only problem in really comparing these sets is that they're not independent sets of data. Some teams have more success and others have less which causes more/less light to be shown on various groups, but to even hint that one group is somehow fundamentally different than the other group isn't a good idea.

I agree with you if you exclude Seahawk fans.

Patriots fans in large part have differentiated themselves from other fan bases during the course of their success, failures, spy gate, and especially deflate gate. There have been a couple of Seahawk fans that came close, and perhaps they haven't been involved in the same controversies to make a full comparison and see if there are more (probably because their team doesn't cheat), but the vast number of Patriots fans to react in the ways indicative to this thread, other threads, and I've met in real life is unprecedented among other fan bases. Clearly I'm not the only one who feels this way or has witnessed this, but it's a clear distinction that a larger portion of Patriots fans have demonstrated. Perhaps the team attracts more of these types for one reason or another, and it's not the entire fan base, but their 'bell curve' is clearly skewed in comparison to other teams.

Comparing large groups of people with generalizations leads to genocide. Good luck dealing with the blood of innocents on your hands.

NOTE: I'm not sure which smiley to add in with this post to make it funny. Can we just assume I used the right one?

No debates about genocide rearing.

I just am thankful they got the balls inflated and added air when they did

Brady performed BETTER with 12.5 to 13.5 air in the second half of the AFC championship and was brilliant in the Super Bowl

Hopefully, officials will pay more attention to how weather conditions affect balls, keep a need and pump available and Brady will win another SB or two

I don't care enough to look it up, but did he "perform better" strictly based on stats, or was he throwing a better ball? He is below average on deep passing these days no matter the PSI.

Which makes it even more unbelievably stupid that Brady would have resorted to messing with the balls in the first place. Why risk your legacy, and millions of dollars in lost revenues, when the gain is so slight, and as we have seen, unnecessary? I hate to say it, but Brady deserves everything he has gotten with this. After Spygate the Pats should have been the cleanest, most compliant organization on the planet, if for no other reason than knowing that everyone would be looking at them with a jaundiced eye and turning over every stone. Just dumb, reckless and unnecessary. And what's sad is that I still don't think the team or the fans have seen the light yet. They better see it soon, because one more violation like this and the severity of the next punishment could be off the charts.

Then why do you believe it? In order to believe it you have to make Brady out to be stupid, which where is the corroborating evidence for that? What we've got plenty of evidence for is A) Brady can be a beyotch on the sidelines, and B) The 'inflator' don't seem like too bright a bulb, or too much an outstanding citizen, just from the texts alone. Sucking around for free stuff etc.

The Wells report is typical kangaroo court garbage and you know it.

Stayund bah yur mayun!

Funny stuff.

I would make it easier to have a rational discussion if these few hold out pats fans would look at things realistically. There are great discussions to be had around the severity of the punishment, whether spy gate should be factored in, affect on Brady's legacy, affect of this on Goodell and his legacy/time left... But these don't happen (at least in the last 20 pages) because every page there is a pats homer arguing that it never happened or the Colts cheated just as badly.
