Someone Brady trusts needs to pull him aside and explain that if he takes this to federal court he's not protecting his legacy, he's taking a sledgehammer to it.

Depends. If he is truly innocent, and he feels the courts would exonerate him, go for it. The questions remains: why did he refuse to cooperate, with regards to copies of the requested texts. If there is a valid reason (not the nonsense that some Pats homers have suggested in this thread), going to court wouldn't destroy his legacy.

If, however, there is something to hide in those texts, or he just arrogantly thinks "I'm Tom Brady, they can't do this to me," then yeah, going through the courts would be stupid.

The bolded is essentally what NE SAID they did (at the other extreme): prep the balls, set them to the lowest allowable PSI, then let the refs inspect them, hope they pass, then allow the PSI to drop as a result of their prep (essentially raising the temp of the balls by vigourously rubbing them), which results in a ball below the lower threshold. IMO, that's not "cheating;" it's pushing the envelope. The cheating is when the Pats allegedly tampered with the balls AFTER the refs inspected them. Based on the texts that we've read/heard about, IMO, there's reason to believe that McNally and Jastremeski did that, and possible with Brady directing them to do so, or knowing they were doing so.

Now, you may think that Brady is innocent and he didn't have anything to do with post-inspection deflation, that's another issue, but comparing what Rodgers said to what Brady is being suspended for is almost as ridiculous as comparing deflating footballs (post-inspection) to teams who get penalized alot for hits to the head.

I "hate" Brady because I'm a Jets fan and he's a Pat. I don't really hate him as a person and think he's the second best QB in NFL history - just hate him in the sports fan sense.

I'm enjoying the Pats getting dragged through the mud of course, but said form the very beginning of this thread that it's much ado about nothing. However the Pats arrogance and cheating ways (not interested in rehashing all of it so don't bother) puts a target on their back that they somewhat deserve.

All of that said, frankly I don't really care what happens with the suspension since I think the Pats can go 3-1 or 2-2 at worst without him. In a way I think it may be fun to watch Jimmy G early in the season (on opening night at least) and see what he has.

I also think the Pats fans trying to either spin things on this topic or showing their flat out ignorance in some cases is very funny. If I was a Pats fan I'd take comfort in the Super Bowl victory that isn't going away and not offer lame defenses and conspiracy theories that make me look like a loon.

Hey DW, we can agree to disagree on this but the rule clearly states the ball should be between 12.5 – 13.5 PSI. The entire crux of your argument boils down to “if the ref doesn’t catch it then it’s not cheating”. So by that reasoning it should be ok to fill the ball with helium or some other gas and as long as the ref approves then it’s not cheating. How about a football that was made out of unapproved material, or inserting some sort of electronic device? Do you really feel its not cheating if the ref misses it?

As I’ve said, it is certainly fair to argue the difference in degree\level of cheating, but what Brady is accused of and what Rodgers freely admitted to doing are both cheating; the only difference being the level.

I think the bigger point you're missing is how well do the officials test and manage the footballs? I've thought all along this probably varies greatly across officials and maybe contributed to the problem.

We have evidence that, on the very same day as "deflategate", Aaron Rodgers was playing with over-inflated footballs. With victory seemingly in hand over the Seattle Seahawks, Packer's coach Mike McCarthy, who learned of an NFL sting operation based on claims from the Dallas Cowboys (miffed from the Dez Bryant no-catch call), took the air out of the balls in the 4th quarter to protect Rodgers. Everyone in the NFL knew that Rodgers had big balls, but with suddenly normal sized balls, the Pack faltered and, with an improbable victory, Seattle advanced to their second consecutive Super Bowl.

Obviously, this is tongue in cheek. Many of you need to lighten up a little.

The rules only govern the pressure of the football - that is between 12.5 and 13.5 PSI. There is no explicit wording about tampering with the ball after inspection, although common sense tells it's wrong (why would there be such wording?)

Tampering with the ball post inspection is certainly more brazen. And, in Rodger's case, you could also blame negligence on the part of game officials. However, they are both different means to the same ends. They each result in a game ball outside the allowable air pressure. Technically, they are both illegal.

I'm not making a big deal about it. I respect both QBs. But, I would bet that if the deflation issue never happened and it were Brady talking about "pushing the limits" and getting an overinflated ball into the game, many people would reach different conclusions. Try to answer that one objectively.

Rodgers was pretty candid in his interview. In fact, the honesty was refreshing. He felt that an over-inflated ball offered no competitive advantage and that the rules shouldn't have an upper limit on PSI. Essentially, he like the ball a certain way; sees no advantage gained; and justifies (in his mind) having a ball outside the allowable range. Again, I'm not criticizing Rodgers here. I'm pointing out that he thought so little of the issue, he could talk openly about it.

The elephant in the room is still the referees. The Rodgers' interview suggests they sometimes neglect to even test the balls with a guage. Texts from the Wells Report mention a game played with 16 PSI balls... There might be too much prima donna is some of today's QBs but I would bet that type of inconsistency would drive them nuts (not a balls reference).

Like, since there is no record of Colts' employees texting each other that "Andy" wanted his footballs deflated, nor one of these employees referring to himself as the deflator, nor video of one of these employees taking the footballs, AFTER INSPECTION, into an empty room, nor the Colts refusing to allow the NFL investigator to question this employee again (after this information comes to their attention), nor instances of "Andy" lying to NFL investigators("I don't know who those guys are" <that I signed memorabilia for & exchanged texts with&gt, nor evidence of Andy refusing to cooperate by sharing copies of his text records.

Why beat this into the ground? Yes, they only tested four balls and screwed up the measurements on one of those. But, the balls were within 12.5 - 13.5 on at least one of the guages. Given, they probably couldn't say which guage was more accurate, the balls appeared legal.

Now, had they started the game at the low end of the range - they would not have been "legal" after a temperature drop. But physics alone can explain the change in the Colt's balls. The Patriot's ball were ~0.65 less than the temperature change alone could explain.

And much of that delta could be explained by uncertainty regarding the actual guage used pregame. But here is the bottom line. It wasn't the PSI numbers that caused the report to conclude as it did, it was the texts and other communications between Brady and his equipment people.

I try... Its an off the charts fiasco. It only involves one of the marquis players in the game and a lightening rod franchise.

Its been full of false reports, press conference and even an NFL rep stealing balls intended for charity. All played out around the drama of a SB. Personally, I'd like to hold a 12, 13 and 14 PSI ball in my hand and see how they feel.

Its hard not to think the balls we're tampered with after reading the texts. But, on the flip side, how do you explain 16 PSi balls in the Jets game? I don't know if we'll ever get a candid statement from Brady.
