Patriots could be in trouble all over again... (1 Viewer)

Some good Q&A from a Boston Globe beat reporter here on the actual rules, bylaws, etc.
That's a great recap......thanks for posting the link. Those interested in getting to the bottom of the "Location" issue. The answers are there. He cites Constitution and Bylaws, and the 2006 memo and provides the language of the rule.

Bottom line is, it's not about the location, it's about the act.

Actually, the answer is not there either "...the sidelines, in the coaches’ booth, in the locker room, or at any other locations accessible to club staff members during the game." is still in the rules and the bylaws. Nobody is disputing that the Pats were in the wrong as far as location goes, but you are allowed to videotape during a game in certain areas. They can't and don't dictate what you are allowed to videotape. But, if you're looking to read an interesting article, you can start with this one.

So Matt Walsh was a scout for the Pats during the Rams' walk-through.
No surprise, but it looks like the Boston Herald really screwed up on their original story. Walsh may have been at the walkthrough, but wasn't taping it.
Three things that have become apparent in the past few hours:1.) John Tomase had better start looking for a new job.

2.) The Patriots legacy isn't tainted.

3.) Posters like phthalatemagic, bigsteelthrill, jonessed and the fanatic are gonna have to come up with some new schtick.
I think Goodells press conference speaks for itself. For better and worse. No real surprises today. Some people did "want" more punishment, but they were mistaken thinking more might come of this.

The previous penalties and the whole episode carrying on for 9 months and into the foreseeable future is plenty of punishment for the cheating performed.
That's reasonable. Now that most of the dust has settled, the only question which lingers is to what degree did the episode manifest as tainting. It seems looking at the universe of sportscasters, newspaper columnists, etc. as well as the common fan's perspective, that there are two camps in each community. The "it's horribly wrong and the punishment wasn't enough" camp and the "what a joke; this is no big deal" camp. Based on what I see on ESPN and read on the net, there's a higher percentage of "common fans" who believe in the taint than in football or media circles. Having said that, I'm reasonably confident in BB's HOF candidacy and the "legacy" of the Patriots Dynasty.

Good day.

OOPS, sorry my bad, I had meant to reply to the Groovus post not yours and I did not mean to lump you in with the haters. Probably should have left MOP out as well since afaik he is only guilty of starting the mis-informed thread from the mis-informed article. Moving on however, Steelroid and Groovus have both been relentless with their bashing for quite sometime and can aptly be called haters who incessantly trash NE post after post regardless of fact. I ignore the vast majority of the haters opinion based posts, but when they appear to so clearly have their facts wrong it is nice to set the record straight as it speaks direectly to their credibility or lack thereof.

Not sure I was looking for a conversation; just trying to point out that it appears as if Goodell isn't the only "bumbling fool" (your words not mine) in all this
Bro, in this very thread... I only posted when a NE apologist LIED to everyone here. A flat out LIE. A made up story. Now you call me names in this thread. He even chastised others who didn't "remember" his made up story. What did you say to him?

Was it okay that I posted the truth of what the NFL and the commissioner stated on the record? Or was that just hate?
Dude, the guy you labled a liar was correct and you owe him an apology. BB did tell the league they had been taping signals since 2000 and the letter Goodell wrote last September referenced def & off signals. If BB and the Pats didn't tell the league the taping included off then why would thye have included it? Even if the poster in question was wrong it is one thing to call him mistaken and quite another to call him a liar. I called you a hater because it is a demonstable fact that you are; as your countless posts in numerous threads will attest. If there is any doubt in anyones mind I suggest they do a search on your id and include the words patriot & spygate in the search.

Lots of hate, lots of flat out unfounded allegation and mis-information.

You don't like the Pats, they been pounded the Steelers and so many other teams rumps for so many years and now some of you have the opportunity to make yourselves feel better by tearing them down. We get it, and since the Pats brought it on themselves there is little that Pats fans can do other than to ocassionaly point out how often you are flat out wrong and how little credibility you and most of the other haters really have.

Its safe to say we'll never know the truth. If Walsh knew he had nothing more than tapes, he would have never talked to the media considering the Pats had already been punished back at the start of the season. Belicheck's story will never hold water, neither will Goodell's destruction of the evidence. The tarnish remains however.

The loss of a 1st round pick in addition to $750,000 in fines ensures that their legacy has indeed been tainted. As a Pats fan I would be extremely pissed that Bill tarnished the franchise that I rooted for. Then again, the fact that

they won will allow the shallow people that care more about winning then sportsmanship to continue to trivialize their cheating (illegal taping).

Broncos Penalized Again for Salary Cap Violations

By Mark Maske

Washington Post Staff Writer

Friday, September 17, 2004; 5:37 PM

The penalties imposed Thursday on the Denver Broncos for violations of the league's rules regarding the disclosure of deferred compensation to players and the salary cap were the second sanctions against the team for similar infractions in less than three years.

In December 2001, the Broncos were fined $968,000 and lost a third-round pick in the 2002 draft for violations reportedly relating to $29 million in deferred payments to quarterback John Elway and running back Terrell Davis.

On Thursday, the league announced that the Broncos have been fined $950,000 and will lose a third-round selection in next year's draft for circumventing the salary cap between 1996 and '98. The penalties were set in an agreement between the league, the Players Association and the Broncos and resolve a case against the team brought before the sport's special master by the NFL's Management Council in January 2003, the league announced.

The penalties could be viewed as further vindication for Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis, who has said in the past that Broncos owner Pat Bowlen should be suspended for salary cap violations. Davis has contended that the Broncos' circumvention of the salary cap helped them win the Super Bowl in the 1997 and '98 seasons."

Of course you can also chalk up my team the 49rs during their Dynasty

And you really don't want to peel back the closet door on the Dallas Cowboys between 1980 and 2001.

So keep running your mouth.....

I, along with most on this board, can clearly see that Goodell is only attempting damage control and intends not to punish the Patriots further regardless of what else is revealed. Goodell clearly stumbled when he offered no direct answer as to whether he knew this taping went back to 2000 when he levied the initial punishment. Nevertheless, sports fans know the Patriots didn't win all of their games straight-up and that stigma will surround the organization from here on out.
 This new poster knows things!
Great two new posters Know things and are in agreement. Reminds of that movie Dumb and Dumber.

He didn't. In fact, he refused to go on record for nearly five months. The only place I've ever seen him quoted was a fluff piece by Mike(?) Fish at ESPN.com, where he said absplutely nothing of substance.

I heard Mark Schelereth on Mike Felgers radio program on the way home from work today. He claimed the Broncos infractions were minor and that everyone does it. Then as luck would have it, I also had the misfortune to see his act on NFL Live today making insane baseless assertions that NE "must have" used their tapes in game. I have as much evidence that Schelereth used steroids as Schelreth does to support his insane assertion. What a world class POS Schelereth is:thumbdown:

What exactly does that have to do with what I posted?

BB is a special genius, incapable of missing even the subtlest of nuance. I know this because Patriot fans have assured me this is so. It is the safest base presumption one may make so I am told.

Extrapolating forth from that base presumption one gets that BB could not have had real doubt about the rules nor their intent, how could he being the genius he is?. We also know that a genius does not devote time, effort, and resources wastefully, so the cheating had benefit during their winning years. Enough benefit that the genius who weighed the risk/reward felt it worth it even in light of scandal and potential disgrace. Given the risk was high the reward had to be also. 9some may want to argue the risk of discovery was small but a genius such as BB knows no secrets are kept unless between only two persons with one of them dead.

The dynasty is tainted because BB himself has judged it so.

I feel sorry for N.E. fans who thought they had something real to believe in. I know they hurt knowing deep down the truth. I weigh their hurt by the vigor with which they have become apologists. I don't condem them for this. I would potentially do likewise under similar circumstances.

I do understand that the Patriots are not the cause of society crumbling, just a manifestation of that reality.

LOL at the Boston Herald . . .

Newspaper apologizes for Spygate story BOSTON (AP) — The Boston Herald has apologized for reporting that the New England Patriots videotaped a walkthrough by the St. Louis Rams one day before the two teams played in the Super Bowl in 2002.In the apology, published in the newspaper's Wednesday edition and posted on its website, the Herald said it now knows the report was inaccurate and that no tape ever existed. The apology came one day after former Patriots video assistant Matt Walsh met with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. Walsh told Goodell he did not tape the walkthrough and had no knowledge of any other Patriots employees having done so.The Herald's Feb. 2 story, published one day before New England's 17-14 Super Bowl loss to the New York Giants, was based on unidentified sources.

About time, I wonder how long before Schelreth apologizes for what he said yesterday. He must have gone to the same school of journalism as Tomase. Another baseless, gutless aassertion from another clown at the 4 letter.....................

It would be much appreciated if genuine. But now we both know better. Thank you very much. And have a nice day.
Well-played.Ditkaless Wonders has some fascinating near-buddhist postings on objectified reality, but he paradoxically mixes this perspective with a "holier than though" fire and brimstone judgementalism that I find fascinating.

was listening to mike-and-mike on the drive in and they quoted Brady as saying ESPN is like MTV without the videos. It´s sports without the highlights. classic.

Thank God this is over.

What's been fascinating to me about this whole saga outside the lines is the utter and complete decline of journalistic integrity covering this story. The Herald story/apology alone should be taught in Journalism 101 on what NOT to do. Now, you've got this little nugget from the NY Times this AM:

Early each game week, teams give players a DVD — it used to be a videotape — as a primary study aid. Generally, the DVDs have recent footage of the next opponent. A defensive player, for example, would receive a DVD of plays by the opponent’s offense. Teams can create subsets of plays for players — plays run from inside the 20-yard line, for example, or on third-and-long.The perspective is different from what is seen by television viewers. It usually features wide views from the end zone and the sideline so that all the players on the field can be seen on the screen. In between plays, the scoreboard is shown so the viewer knows the down, distance, score and time remaining. The Patriots added an element — sideline signals from the opposing coaching staff. This way, they could not only study what plays an opposing team might call in various situations, but also how an opposing coach would signal for such plays.
So the Times is saying that the players themselves had the signals from the tapes. A claim without any corroberation anywhere - Not from Walsh, Goodell or anyone else. If this was really the case, it would have been splashed all over ESPN and elsewhere as the LEAD of yesterday's coverage. I'm almost certain they made this up on their own. There's been a lot of this going around - Mike Fish is another one.... Guys simply playing "connect the dots" on this story without facts and passing it off as "journalism". The Pats look bad enough on the actual facts, yet the media is trying to make them look worse without any evidence. That's pretty troubling. It's pretty amazing.

Not sure where you're getting that from what he wrote.

Dont know what to tell you. Not all people get it.

Not sure I was looking for a conversation; just trying to point out that it appears as if Goodell isn't the only "bumbling fool" (your words not mine) in all this ;)
Bro, in this very thread...

He is a liar. He insulted others for not remembering the made up story. He still hasnt apologized. You are flatly incorrect and still spreading misinformation:

May 9 2008 "We don't know [about attempts to steal offensive signals] yet because we haven't looked at the tapes," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said Thursday before the league had completed its review of the new evidence. "All we have is the list supplied last night [by Walsh's attorney]. One of them is labeled 'OFF signals.' None of the others are listed that way. Let us look at the tapes and we'll have more to say about that."

"The rule which the Patriots violated was the policy that prohibits use of equipment for the taping of offensive or defense signals. I know there've been references to defensive signals, which is more logical. But let us look at the tapes and verify what is on there."

So you see... the RULE is about offensive and defensive signals. The ADMISSION was just about defensive signals.

Certainly this was "new" and never stated by BB or the Pats to the commish... but no more punishment was forthcoming because the rule covered all such illegalities, even if the cheaters were not forthcoming and tried to hide the facts. Thats why you have the NFL commisioner basically calling BB a liar.

:welcome:
